I agree. They have largely disappeared. They were my fave genre.
In the past year or so... the only films I've seen like those is 'LET HIM GO'... that is somewhat like a retro-thriller.
I wonder why they fell out of favour?

I never felt this film or The Fugitive were particularly sophisticated or grown up. It's TV series or TV movie material with money thrown at it.

Still enjoyable though.

Not to mention that in my eyes... when smarter movies get made (even if not thrillers like this), a lot of modern audiences absolutely nitpick the hell out of them but seem to always allow their favorite superhero movies to be left as a flawless masterpiece. Just my take from what Isee all over the threads on this website, no less.

Every movie has "flaws" or "plotholes" but I just see modern audiences wanting stuff that is more flash than substance... so when they get a more serious experience, they drill into all the problems it may have.

Taunting him by phone and tantalizing him with clues, the assassin (John Malkovich) lures Horrigan into an electrifying battle of wits and will that only one man can survive. I believe so. Paramount have done some single format releases, as have Warner (in the UK at least) and now Sony, so seems to be the way things are headed.

First they offered the original audio track on Last Action Hero and now this. Sony is kicking even more ass than usual lately.

I suppose "grown up" was a poor choice of words on my part. I think the action/thrillers that are aimed exclusively towards an adult audience, rather than kids/families are just becoming more rare. As others pointed out, it's all about the tentpoles and multi-billion dollar franchises for the studios these days. Not that I don't enjoy those too, cuz I certainly do!

Great choices! It's too bad they're few and far between these days.

I'm all for these 4K only releases. The hardware is affordable enough now that most people who are into collecting physical media should be willing and able to make the jump. It's time. I just hope the price points will start to reflect the lack of a second disc.

Europeans in the future: No 4k disc at all.

We don't have digital copies and they remove Blu-ray discs now...

I am not sure if its due to the pandemic but in Canada, older titles are impossible to find.

You can't find any older Warner, Lionsgate and Disney titles anymore. Even Paramount, Universal and Sony are becoming scarce.

It is quite discouraging for people who want to build a 4K library but they can't find Kong Skull Island, Pacific Rim or any of the Pixar or older Disney titles.

Not to mention some titles are only released in USA so I have to import them.

Yes you can import but how many people out there actually put in the time to look all over the globe for titles?

When I started out, finding stuff in stores was easy but still hard. I had to resort to ebay, WOWHD, JB Hifi, Zavvi and any place that still had 4Ks to find the titles I wanted.

Maybe once the pandemic eases, stock levels go back to normal but what if it doesn't?

People probably missed the last several years where they announced they were closing pressing plants around the world. They just aren't making as many copies, period. And repressings take longer...if they even bother doing that.

That's why I don't subscribe to this "I'm going to wait until it's below $10 or Black Friday" nonsense. If people don't initially buy they sure as hell aren't going to repress because there's no demand. I buy them as soon as I can, usually within a month of release if I haven't preordered it to begin with.

Pffft. That's harsh. The Fugitve and ITLOF were not just elevated TV, or popcorn fodder. They were both big-time critical darlings that got major Oscar nominations in a very strong year. And both of them hold up like crazy today.

The Summer of 1993. Man, we had it good.
