There are no Italians who watch English-spoken films, except if you're a maniac fan of a given movie/movie series/actor. New generations (and even me) use to watch TV series in their native language, with Italian subtitles. TV series, not movies. Talking about Argento, he used some of the best voice actors in Italy at the time. Listen to David Hemmings in "Deep Red", his Italian voice is fantastic: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gino_La_Monica |

I watched Mother of Tears a decade ago and couldn't believe how low Argento had fallen. I didn't think he could do worst. I watched Dracula 3d a few years later. Boy was I wrong... Has there ever been such a massive drop in quality from another great director? I mean, i've seen great directors like Carpenter make movies like Ghost of Mars and The ward but Dracula 3D is on another level. It makes Uwe Boll look like a genius.
I can't imagine how interesting a Dracula adaptation could have been had Argento done one in the early 80's, with Goblins and all. Last edited by fred25_Ca; 05-16-2021 at 10:21 AM. |

The humour in Deep Red is very Italian-like, sweet and 100% human. There is nothing wrong in those scenes, they contribute to create the greatness of the movie, which is also a very faithful depiction of the 70's Italy.

Super excited for this release. Never got around to seeing Deep Red, but Suspiria is a yearly watch for me. If it looks anything like the 4K release of Suspiria, it's going to be awesome.

If you're looking for a "suspiria part 2" that would be Inferno. Deep Red is quite different in style, characterization, setting, and plot. Suspiria marked a turning point in Argento's career.

For post Opera, I like 'Two Evil Eyes', 'Trauma' (bar the ending), and 'Do You Like Hitchcock?' best. Yes, the TV one.

Yes, but Argento originally intended Deep Red to fit within the "animal trilogy" format as The Sabre-Toothed Tiger. Thematically & stylistically, DR follows that series, whereas Inferno expands upon Suspiria.

What about Argento's later movies like Sleepless, The Card Player, and Mother of Tears, do you watch those in Italian too? |

Yes, most of his great films follow more in his original thriller horror roots, and only sometimes sprinkled with light supernatural elements (such as Phenomena's Jennifer being able to communicate with insects). For the most part the first four films, as well as Tenebrae and Phenomena are more in the classical Argento vein, while Suspiria and Inferno are more supernatural horror, but all of his films retain his unique and classical Argento touch, and are incredibly charming (in a horrific way) and stylish in my opinion. So to a viewer who liked Suspiria I see no reason why they wouldn't also love his others, unless the main aspect they liked about Suspiria was being a supernatural horror film.

Seriously! I remember everyone losing their shit when Anchor Bay put out the longer cut on DVD back in the day. That was the version I fell in love with and became my favorite Argento film. Somewhere along the line people started favoring the shorter version, which honestly might tighten up the pacing a bit here and there, but pales in comparison overall. I heard someone on a podcast a couple years ago say they always prefer the shorter cuts of Argento films, even the Creepers cut of Phenomena!!!!!

Everyone here, keep in mind that the "Animal Trilogy" in Italy, back in the day, was successful, but not a cultural phenomenon. "Deep Red" was a 360 degrees revolution. We Italians still refer to that movie when speaking about the horrors of everyday's life or frightening crime news, in the same way as you mention Rambo when referring to Vietnam vets or super soldiers. It has become "universal" in the Italian culture. Argento's fame and popularity became as much big as Sergio Leone's. "Suspiria" cemented that, but "Suspiria" wasn't successful as "Deep Red". As simple as that, this is the honest and accurate "chart" of Argento's success in Italy: 1- Deep Red 2- Suspiria 3- The Animal Trilogy (all together) 4- Inferno (Eleonora Giorgi is a superstar in Italy) 5- Tenebrae (Giuliano Gemma is one of the most iconic Italian actors) 6- Phenomena 7- Opera 8- All other movies except Phantom and Dracula 3D 9- Phantom and Dracula 3D 10- Giallo Last edited by UniSol GR77; 05-16-2021 at 11:27 PM. |
