Amazingly enough my bundle of 3 movies arrived today here in southwestern Ontario, despite the work slowdown/threatened strike at Canada Post. Hats off to Turbine for their efficiency! I've just finished the first half of F9, and am quite impressed with the 3D. I wasn't expecting much, but it is certainly just as good as Hobbs and Shaw, if not better. Really hoping now to get 8 and 10 in 3D. Thanks again Turbine!

I saw the first half today. I'm very pleasantly surprised. It exceeded my expectations for the 3D. There are many great action sequences that benefit from the 3D effect. Even the shots of the road filmed at bumper level look fantastic. The picture quality is excellent, with highly detailed shots of vehicles and the actors' faces, as well as scenes with a successful 3D composition, such as tufts of grass in the foreground or a flock of birds beautifully integrated into the perspective. I've found the film very entertaining so far, and the 3D is a true enhancement.

How would you compare the film and 3-D to Hobbs & Shaw?

Unfortunately, I don't have time to watch Hobbs & Shaw again in its entirety these days for a direct comparison. From what I remember, 9 should definitely be on par. I even think 9 offers more successful 3D moments that look really great.

With the positive 3D reviews I caved and got the bundle. I saw Panda and DM on vudu but can't see those anymore. Anyway, F&F movies are 1 and done for me but it will be cool to see this is 3D. I probably won't watch until later in the summer, possibly August.

I really enjoyed this one and I'm not a follower of the series.. The action sequences must be seen in 3D. Crisp video overall with nice 7.1 audio. Definitely worth it.

Very very simplistic answer: I’d say the 3D’s a bit better than Hobbs & Shaw’s, but the film’s worse. I thought that H&S was at least funnier, I felt more involved with its characters and it was more streamlined in its story-telling. (Having said that, I'm not sure that I'm in the target audience for either..!)

Really, though, I’d describe both of them as “Workmanlike” post conversions. The 3D is there, it’s inoffensive, sometimes quite nice - but its rarely, if ever, in any way special. I don’t think there are any “Wow!” moments in either movie, but Fast & Furious probably has the edge.

As usual though - and I think this may not be a popular opinion – action and 3D don’t make for good bed-fellows. Particularly modern action, with its kinetic camera movements and very fast edits: The 3D rarely has time to breath in either film but, again, I think F&F may have been a tiny bit better in that regard. It's also a better looking film, I think, in terms of being 3D friendly: I could be wrong, but it seemed brighter and more colourful.

I think the fight in the rain was H&S’s stand-out 3D moment, even if only very briefly. F&F’s best sequence, I thought, was the scene set in
[Show spoiler]space. Yes, for anyone not familiar with the film who was curious enough to reveal the spoiler there, a couple of the team go into space in this one. In a Pontiac Fiero. This takes the series’ levels of ridiculousness to new heights, literally.
I actually thought that the 3D in this sequence was better than in the excellent same-location film whose 3D is generally over-rated (in my opinion),
[Show spoiler]Gravity.

Anyway, as long as you’re not expecting demo-worthy 3D, F&F is certainly worth picking up - and it’s the only reason I’d ever be likely to revisit this film!

Thanks for the detailed response! I gotta say, not being a fan of the series at all (my girlfriend loves them for their ridiculousness but I generally find them tedious and annoyingly directed), and having picked up Hobbs & Shaw solely because of the 3-D, I was surprised at how much I liked both the film and the 3-D. I found the film to be hugely enjoyable hokum and very funny, mainly due to the wonderful cast having a ball with their characters; The Stath and The Rock have excellent and effortless onscreen chemistry together, and Vanessa Kirby and Idris Elba fit into the mix beautifully. I also found the direction to be less choppy than usual, particularly in the fight scenes which were quite well choreographed this time and weren’t over-edited to death. (Another major plus for me is that Vin Diesel’s character is completely absent.) And the 3-D was also better than I expected; not remarkable in any way to be sure, but definitely there, and it enhances the film quite a bit. Workmanlike, as you say, but most welcome nonetheless. If the 3-D in F9 is a bit better I might still pick it up despite the film being worse than H&S (which I completely expected). Lastly, unfortunately I agree with you on
[Show spoiler]Gravity
— great film, but I also found its 3-D overrated; I’m still glad it’s there, but it could have been so much better utilized if the director had been less timid.

I went into this expecting to hate it but I actually enjoyed the film and the 3d.

Hobbs & Shaw made no impression on me (constant low strength), and this was maybe broadly similar but it definitely had higher highs. I saw a gun pop out early on at the farm and the moment when Diesel approached Cena down that deep corridor caught my attention. Nice to see Edinburgh in 3d too.

If Fast X is similar then I'd be genuinely interested in seeing it.

I likewise wasn't expecting much. I've only seen a few Fast & Furious movies. Until RitwikKN2002 reported that Fast 10 was a good time in 3D, I assumed these 3D versions were only available in select territories because they weren't up to par. Happy to say I was wrong. Fast 9's 3D is good, sometimes great. The opening prologue is shot on film and a bit muted, but once the film cuts to the present, it's a roller coaster. Dom's shotgun barrel pokes way out of the screen, and the action sequences are a buffet of Z-axis camera moves. The space scenes are another highlight, with lots of depth and particle effects.

The backgrounds are the weakest aspect, the rotoscoping often drops off there. The opening action sequence has a lot of foliage rendered flatly. Often you'll see a forest and each tree is only in one plane. But the fore and mid ground are always immaculate. The 3D delivers where it counts.

It's still cinematic junk food, but now it's also 3D gold. I'd be happy to see Turbine rescue the other 3D Fast titles as well...after titles higher on my wishlist, like Puss in Boots 2 and Jackass 3D.

My expectations for FF9 were already low, but this movie is really more than silly.
[Show spoiler]With out-of-this-world super magnets, cars flying in space, etc...
Granted, the stunts and action are "overwhelmingly" done, and leaving the masculine macho-behaviours asside there is still some entertainment to be found.
As for the 3D it varies from negligible (especially backgrounds) to scenes with a lots of depth and good effectiveness. It seems the movie was not intended to be shot stereoscopic in the first place, but nevertheless the 3D helps improving the experience in a lot of sequences.
In the end the disc is not one I wouldt necessarily require on my shelf, but it should help Turbine go on with the series.

For 7 and 8, they confirmed that there is no 3D master available so it's unlikely that they will get a 3D blu ray. The full interview is available at

Just watched Fast and Furious 8 in preparation for F9 3D. I'm not sure if turning your brain of is enough for this seriously dumb movie that had me crying with laughter. They even used audio effects from Transformers but it's subtle so normal people probably won't hear it F8 is a direct followup to Hobbs & Shaw which I watched a long time ago so I wish I had watched the 3D version before watching F8. Personally I loved every minute of F8 and it's a shame that there isn't a 3D version. But now at least I get to watch F9 in 3D

The tragedy of F8 is that Universal refused to put the extended cut out on disc in any format. And then on top of that the UK version was edited to reduce the impact of a scene. The film needs an uncut release even in 2D.

That's cool to hear, thanks.
No Time to Die had mostly consistent medium 3D layers. It was good.

(One day the modern revival of long-shot action scenes will overlap with 3D...)

Does this mean Gravity isn't demo-worthy 3D?

That's a day I hope I live to see..!

Well, I say it absolutely definitely isn't. It's a film that, I think, is highly regarded as a great 3D film (by the mainstream crowd rather than us lot): I think it's a great film, for sure, but its 3D really isn't all that impressive or effective for the most part. Often good, but all too frequently not as good as I think it could/should have been.

Watched on a large screen in total darkness with Atmos and TR, I rate Gravity as one of my favorite 3D experiences on disc. Pretty much demo material. But while the whole "experience" is demo, the 3D is not. The 3D by itself is closer to Need for Speed which does the job well enough, but isn't anything special.

A range of Medium 3D layering is good for 3D in general compared to mostly mild 3D films, although not as great as mostly strong 3D layering (when appropriate for each shot set up/distance/composition/etc.).

We finally watched Fast 9 3D yesterday. It was a total blast for us seeing it in 3D! Turbine did a fantastic job with not only the 3D transfer but, on the audio side. For me, Fast 9 is now the thrill ride it was meant to be! There are now 2 fasts & furious 3D enhanced titles in the mix. Im hoping for more!
