Universal received an unmarked envelope with a soiled Jaws 5 slipcover and a rotten banana peel inside.

I just heard and so shock. I read it on DVD News Flash Facebook page. Can't wait what label will get it.

Bye Bye Severine Films.

If you hate DDF so much why are you here? I’m a noob and already I’m liking this movie. I’m watching the drama to see if anything good comes of it. This is quickly entering True Lies/The Abyss territory. I think it will be Vestron, since they released another somewhat similar film Little Monsters. Both are early 90s cult favorites, both are dismissed by most people, and both were in dire need of a HD disc release for years. However, Little Monsters was originally a Vestron release, then purchased by MGM when Vestron went under, then somehow it made its way back to Lionsgate for a Blu-ray release. I have no clue what Drop Dead Fred’s ownership history looks like. Universal has made deals with both Kino and Shout! Factory in the past, so it could be them too. Severin makes it seem like another Blu-ray is in the works, and that this is more of an ownership dispute than it is a complete halt, so my guess is that we’ll at least have news by the end of the year.

On a lighter note, is the UK release region free? If it’s cheap I might just pick that up. And don’t be shocked if some Severin releases pop up on eBay for a ton of money. Any copies that were made are all there is. Think of this as the Yesterday and Today of Blu-ray releases.

VS offers a yearly subscription and you get all their releases.

If I were a betting man, realistically I think either Kino or Arrow has it. Maybe Mill Creek and they seem like the type to not even realize Severin was releasing it until after the fact.
Of your picks, Kino is most likely, since they have released a lot of Universal’s movies already. Arrow is a wild card, since the odds of an Arrow job on this is very unlikely. Doesn’t mean it shouldn’t happen, but it probably wouldn’t happen.

Mill Creek isn’t even the bottom of the barrel, they’re the piss on the ground beneath the bottom of the barrel. They have been irresponsible for decades, going back to the days of 50-film Alfred Hitchcock sets and 30-film Shirley Temple sets. Remember those? I sure do. They would get DDF, make a transfer from whatever they had, DNR it shitless, and drop it on a disc. That or make it a double feature with another equally unfortunate movie. Then it would either be dropped online or at your local Ollie’s. A total insult for any film, let alone this one.

No way. Stay out of this Mill Creek.

It's near certain one of these will be included in the deal:

Coupe de Ville
Drop Dead Fred
Ghost Dad
Henry and June
White Palace

I can imagine Bill being crazy enough to pick Ghost Dad, but would Universal allow it?
Coupe de Ville, never heard of it.
Drop Dead Fred,
Ghost Dad, not gonna happen. He was royally canceled. Aside from news stories and replays of “Spanish Fly”, BC is nowhere to be found nowadays. Fortunately. There are few reruns if any, and I don’t even see those Mill Creek box sets of The Cosby Show. BC and Roseanne are the only two people who got canceled so hard that even Mill Creek won’t release their stuff. (This is the same Mill Creek that released Battlefield Earth, by the way.) I judge the people separately from their work (unlike most of us on the left), so I’d probably like Ghost Dad. The rest of the left and the studios see it differently. Hence the reason QT’s older movies aren’t being rereleased yet (nobody wants to cut a check to Bob and Harvey), The Usual Suspects is still on the barebones Blu-ray and old DVD, and the reason why Cosby won’t be coming to Blu-ray any time soon.
Henry and June, I can do that. I’m not leaving this tab and losing my text again, but IIRC it was one of the first NC-17 movies after the X rating was abolished. I might buy it just for that. Ratings have sold me movies before.
White Palace, never heard of it.

I usually judge Blu-ray and 4K releases based on what we could have gotten instead. If we got one of these but didn’t get The Abyss, I wouldn’t be happy. That’s how I judge it. DDF is the only one of those five that I specifically know of that need a good release, so that’s naturally the one I’m rooting for. If another disrespected movie finally gets some TLC, I won’t be too sad. If it’s a stupid or pointless release, then I’ll get pissed.

I'm thinking it'll be budget label like Mill Creek though.
Would fit fine in the VSU line. Though I'm also in the group who thinks it's extremely unlikely VS is the one releasing this.

Never heard of Cruel Jaws but I can only assume that’s a definite copyright issue that finally came to light. Similar to all the problems John Waters had with the music in his movies. DDF is more of a licensing or ownership issue. As far as I know it’s owned by Universal, and while it’s possible they signed two DDF-specific deals by accident, it’s more likely that they signed multiple massive package deals fo hundreds if not thousands of titles and the deals eventually overlapped and created this mess.

I’ll even go out on a limb and say that that’s the reason why DDF hasn’t been on Blu-ray before. These boutique labels have been around for decades and are finally getting their chance to release other studios’ product, and as seen here, shit happens. The reason why Severin won’t give their “friend’s” name is because nobody advertises their competitors. That would be like Burger King saying “we accidentally had McDonald’s’ property, so go to McDonald’s if you want it.” At least Severin didn’t dig their heels in and take it to court, as that would’ve just added a few more years to the wait. I predict at least confirmation from someone (possibly even Severin, who knows) by the end of 2021.

There was a movie called Paint Drying made a few years ago. It was made for the sake of screwing with the British censors, and long story short it’s ten and a half hours of paint drying on a wall, that the BBFC had to watch and rate. I would rather watch that a hundred times in a row than watch the Jaws sequels once. The Jaws sequels suck donkey balls.

A couple of things:

1) Drop Dead Fred is definitely with Universal (per the Kino Lorber Insider)

2) As things stand, if it is part of Kino's latest Universal deal, it's a Scorpion Releasing pick, and will come out under the Scorpion Releasing banner (unless something changes due to Walt's ongoing health issues, and either KLSC or Code Red end up releasing it)

Walt seems to be respected by most labels, so Scorpion make sense. I doubt Severin would refer to Mill Creek as 'the next best thing'. That only leaves Arrow, and I'd be very surprised if they did it as a US-only title.

Agreed, if it was Mill Creek, they would have simply said 'the best thing' instead.
