I don't mean to get into your business or anything, but if you say you can't even afford a regular HDTV then how are you able to afford any of those collector's box sets? People always go on about not being able to afford new tech but I've been able to upgrade to pretty much every new video format that's come out in the past 15 years on a very modest budget. I got my 4K Samsung curve a few years ago for $400 off of a guy that was moving and didn't want to keep it in storage. There's always an opportunity to upgrade if you really want to without spending a fortune.

You don’t understand how if done right it can improve movies look at this clip showing the restoration of the 1931 Dracula.

Me? I love the 4K format. I can't afford to upgrade my entire 1080p Blu-ray collection to it, but I am trying to get as many new releases in the new format.

I got a "shitty" Amazon Fire TV (51-incher) for about $300 and with a bit of basic calibration enjoy 4K imagery that's at worst a modest upgrade from Blu-Ray and at best, breathtaking. Whatever you're seeing isn't representative of the vast majority of people here.

Just out of curiosity are you watching 4K discs on a TV with full 4K capabilities? My first experience with watching 4K discs was on an Xbox and a TV that did support 4K but it wasn’t full 4K - I can’t remember what the distinction was. It might have been that it didn’t support HDR. I thought the colours looked washed out and couldn’t see any improvement.

When I upgraded my TV to a full 4K set, I revisited some 4K discs and I was blown away by the improvement.

So to sum up - you don't want 4K because you can't afford it right?

You don’t have a 4KTV so how on earth have you seen any HDR content to make anything like an informed opinion on it? Screen caps? Terribly set-up in store displays? A buddy’s TV? Some YouTube ****tard? The mind boggles.

OP should roll how they wanna roll, but I'd rather have plain 4K releases and the equipment to play on it than collector's editions on the shelves.

But their concerns sound like someone who hasn't witnessed 4K on a decent set-up, which unfortunately does cost a decent amount and needs a bit of research.

4k itself affects nothing about colors, grading, DR, etc. at all, it just gives potential for 4x more details

UHD format allows also for HDR and wide gamut color

wide gamut color actually allows the possibility for things to show even MORE saturation if needed and allow for more colors to be seen, sRGB/REC709 clips away many colors

HDR actually allows for the potential for things to look LESS washed out and dark

don't get your comment at all

I'm not sure, but it's certainly possible.

A space cloud 82 AUs in diameter is much too large to work as a plot device in a Star Trek movie.

Even 2 AUs is a bit strange, but doesn't V'ger eventually "shed" its cloud form in Act III? (I have to rewatch that bit of the movie to refresh my memory.)

I always thought 82 AUs (7.6 BILLION miles, basically a solar system in itself) was ridiculous. 2 is still comically big but much more reasonable. They should have made it .82 (point eighty-two) if they were going to change things IMO.

And yes, they say the cloud dissipates as it approaches Earth orbit. The DE has the entirety of V'Ger coming out of the cloud as it nears.

One thing that irked me about the cloud was how useless itself it was. And when they went into it, while the effects were cool, they really served no purpose.

I can't wait until they put the director's cut on blu-ray. I HATE 4K.

Observations...

Screenshot of two monitors. One showing a shot of the Enterprise leaving Dry Dock

Well, I think the folks at Parmaount listened to the criticisms we had for TMP 4K. The shot is in a preview window taken from a camera and it alreayd looks better than the 4K release. And to top it all off? Look at the bottom left of the image. IT'S EARTH! And here's a brief description that really had my jaw drop.
Using scans of original 1979 photography plates-including some intended to be used but were omitted at the time–our team is digitally recombining these elements to present them as they were originally intended, and with a clarity and quality unimagined. I can’t wait for everyone to see it!
The original Photography Plates. Man, if they did this for all the original effect shots that are still in this edition, they're going to have to strap me down to the seat to stop me from trying to jump into the screen. But more imporatntly, look at the computer itself. Work on TMPE 4K is being done on a Mac.

Enterprise and the V'Ger island

Looks like the light emitting from the island will be a lot less blue and emitting a lot more light. Wonder if this is intended to match how much light is on the actors when we cut to the live action shots. Also, looks like they're going to have to create detailed models of the team coming out of the Enterprise rather than mere stick figures now, eh?

Also note the lightning bolt at the bottom left. It's a much more simpler design being more gray than blue with no blue haze surrounding it. Think this change will be in other shots too?

The Bridge Invader approaches the Enterprise

I like the small change they did here. The bolt of energy that carries the probe to the bridge is no longer just a plain hazy ball of light but now looks exactly like the plasma bolt that V'Ger used to attack the Klingons and the Enterprise from earlier. You think V'Ger is attacking them again, until the bolt stops. I like it!

Plasma Bolt about to make contact with the Enterprise before it fades away

The original recreation of the Plamsa bolt in this shot was a bit hit and miss. You could barely make out the electrical lightning bolts outside of the white center and the streams of light it let off were a bit too CGI. While it's hard to tell in this shot, I can't imagine it looking better in motion since they're aware of what the plasma bolt is supposed to look like with the change in the probe picture from above.

Kirk and the Reflection

It's a love story.

Vulcan

Not only does Vulcan have no moons, but they've also avoided the modern Star Trek trap that features Vulcan not only with dozens of moons, but also a nice clear blue sky. Not here! And it looks like they fixed the issue with the textures on the fire platforms. Their brick like texture never meshed well with other details, giving the impression that certain shapes were clipping through each other, but now everything has a conneciton point and lines appropriating each different shape.

Well, that's it. I bet they're saving the 'lounge' for the actual release.
