Knowing Warner’s track record when it comes to rereleasing titles on a format they’ve previously been on, the most they would do for a new disc is include a new audio mix/track. At least when it came to Blu ray, the extended editions provided an updated transfer over the theatrical cuts, sadly they’re the same though on 4K so the only chance we’ll get of any new 4K disc/remaster in the future is if Peter Jackson suddenly gets hit on the head and realizes people don’t mind grain…or tries to remaster LOTR for 3D (even though 3D is dying), whatever comes first.

Can’t wait to see what the final product actually looks like, and what all the new bonus material is.
Because, let’s be real, even if it’s somewhat underwhelming, I’m still gonna get it. I love these movies way too much to not :P |

Gandalf's staff from the Hobbit trilogy, though... That'd be a mighty nice piece of loot. ![]() I held off on the previous 4K sets specifically to see what this would turn out like. Once we get an official announcement with a complete list of extras, that will determine whether I reserve a copy or not. |

This would be the perfect opportunity to release the deleted scenes that have yet to be released to the pubic. If we aren’t getting them now then I guess we will never see them

This needs a lot of new extras for me to bite, or the original DVD extras, and all of them across the theatrical/extended releases on BD with practical packaging that I am happy to retire the dvd packaging for otherwise there's no chance I will buy this.

I personally liked MY idea for a new “all-inclusive” box set that I posted about in the other LotR thread:
Fellowship of the Ring: 1. Theatrical 4K 2. Extended disc 1 4K 3. Extended disc 2 4K 4. Extended disc 1 Blu-ray (for the commentaries) 5. Extended disc 2 Blu-ray (for the commentaries) 6. Theatrical bonus disc Blu-ray (I know the material is SD, but if it was on a Blu-ray, at least it would look a bit “cleaner”). 7. Appendices part 1 Blu-ray 8. Appendices part 2 Blu-ray (or if they could fit all the appendices on one Blu-ray, that’d be neat too) 9. National Geographic disc that originally came with the extended gift set 10. Costa Botes documentary Two Towers: 1. Theatrical 4K 2. Extended disc 1 4K 3. Extended disc 2 4K 4. Extended disc 1 Blu-ray (for the commentaries) 5. Extended disc 2 Blu-ray (for the commentaries) 6. Theatrical bonus disc Blu-ray 7. Appendices part 1 Blu-ray 8. Appendices part 2 Blu-ray 9. Gollum disc that originally came with the extended gift set 10. Costa Botes documentary Return of the King: 1. Theatrical 4K 2. Extended disc 1 4K 3. Extended disc 2 4K 4. Extended disc 1 Blu-ray (for the commentaries) 5. Extended disc 2 Blu-ray (for the commentaries) 6. Theatrical bonus disc Blu-ray 7. Appendices part 1 Blu-ray 8. Appendices part 2 Blu-ray 9. Howard Shore disc that originally came with the extended gift set 10. Costa Botes documentary Each LotR movie in its own nice 10-disc case with gorgeous artwork and a hub for each disc! And if the SD bonus material could fit onto as few discs as possible, all the better. (And this would retain all those silly Easter eggs too lol). An Unexpected Journey: 1. Theatrical 4K 2. Extended 4K 3. Extended Blu-ray (for the commentaries) 4. Theatrical bonus Blu-ray (with any retailer-exclusive content included) 5. Appendices part 1 Blu-ray 6. Appendices part 2 Blu-ray Desolation of Smaug: 1. Theatrical 4K 2. Extended 4K 3. Extended Blu-ray (for the commentaries) 4. Theatrical bonus Blu-ray (with any retailer-exclusive content included) 5. Appendices part 1 Blu-ray 6. Appendices part 2 Blu-ray Battle of the Five Armies: 1. Theatrical 4K 2. Extended 4K 3. Extended Blu-ray (for the commentaries) 4. Theatrical bonus Blu-ray (with any retailer-exclusive content included) 5. Appendices part 1 Blu-ray 6. Appendices part 2 Blu-ray Each Hobbit movie would have its own 6-disc case with gorgeous artwork and hubs for each disc ![]() All of the movies would include little booklets for navigating the features (like the LotR extended editions came with- I’m still a bit angry that they didn’t do those for The Hobbit). Now, we don’t know what they have planned for bonus material with this new set, but I still think that it’s really going to be “fluff” pieces looking back on “how it’s amazing that it’s been twenty years since Fellowship was released! It was an amazing journey!” but perhaps a new disc could get its own separate case, or if they trimmed the LotR discs down by putting SD material on Blu-rays they could put the new material with one of those |

Sigh, Warner Bros., just sigh.
Honestly, that exquisite set they released in 2016 should've been the one being released now. So not only did they screw that pooch, their strange aversion to condensing all of these discs to a more manageable number will inevitably screw this pooch, too. In an ideal world, someone with half a brain will put all the previously released non-appendices SD-video content onto one disc, cataloged and identifiable per each film in the original trilogy (and including the trailers in HD in there as well). The Hobbit films then get one bonus feature disc (the stuff not on the appendices, like featurettes, trailers, etc.) alongside the appendices, which can't be that debilitating even with the footage being in HD. Pretty sure the Costa Botes documentaries for LOTR can all be placed on one single BD-50 (perhaps with the legacy stuff), and though I know this is definitely a minority opinion, window-boxing the SD-footage across the board makes it less garish and 'ugly' when viewing on an HD screen (as with the Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge! discs, but I know I might be one of three people in the world okay with this, haha). Condensing the LOTR appendices to one Blu-ray disc each might also help, though I reckon that might f*ck with the compression (no means an expert, but I know that's a point of contention for many). That means 6 discs for the EEs of LOTR, 3 discs for the theatrical cuts, 3 discs for the appendices, plus an additional disc for the legacy material and the Costa Botes documentaries, for a total 13 discs for LOTR. Then 6 discs for the Hobbit trilogy, extended and theatrical included, plus 6 more for the appendices, and 1 additional disc for legacy stuff, for another 13. That's 26 total discs, 4 less than the 2016 collection, AND without the need for a separate collection for the theatrical cuts of each trilogy. Of course, it'd have to be released separately in "4K" (heh), but then again, the films themselves can be released as such and then fans can put the discs in the box set itself. Obviously none of that will come to pass, haha, but if those images being passed around are anywhere near reality, I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and just get the 2016 set and slowly but surely get each new disc and put them there instead. Maybe that's Warner Bros.'s plan all along, in which case, nicely played, greedos. |

I'm still kinda baffled as to why they didn't include the commentaries on the EE UHDs. And it's not like the Hobbitses had as many as the LOTR flicks, there's only one each for those!

Twin Towers DNR hurts my eyes in a few scenes. I honestly prefer the green tint for that movie because the theme works with the darks. In the 4K they tried to make it to bright and fantasy like the others.
It's almost a dealbreaker for me because that's my favorite movie of the trilogy. |

Excluding all those wonderful commentaries was quite disappointing, though I presume it was done to emphasize the barebones nature of that release. If they somehow aren't ported over to the remastered blu-rays on this "Ultimate" box that will be a major grievance for sure.
