Did Darius Khondji actually say he thinks the HDR grade of Uncut Gems is trash? Do you have a source? I'm curious about his thoughts on it.

The new cover art was included with a Gems Uncut "newspaper" that the Safdie Brothers made, and was given at premieres for the film. This is why I'm thinking it's the Safdie bros themselves that got Criterion to change the art. It's done by the same famed photographers as the original cover and poster art.
The newspaper is available to purchase directly from A24: https://shop.a24films.com/products/d...by-the-safdies (image source) |

I can't find anything of him saying he that. From what I recall he's not a fan of HDR but the Safdies wanted it. He also has said he doesn't particularly like the look of many 80's films but that was a huge inspiration for the Safdies and so he shot it how they wanted it. You know, like a professional

Yeah, it's one of the most stressful movies I've seen. Despite being a great film, I swore after I seeing it in theaters I wouldn't want to go through that again, but enough time went by and I watched it again a couple months back, and surprisingly, even knowing how it plays out, I still felt the same kind of tension and dread as the first time I saw it. I definitely appreciated Sandler's performance more the second time as well.

I can't find it now either, but I remember reading an article about the movie where there was a quote of him where he said it looks like s*it or whatever and that, if I remember correctly, it was approved by Safdies, not him.

It's definitely going to be a different experience at home versus the theater. Like Nolan movies, this one had a very overbearing sound mix and it left me a bit disoriented to where I was considering leaving several times despite really enjoying the movie. At times the it's hard to really focus because everything is so chaotic from the character interactions to the sounds coming through the speakers. But it was pretty much intentional by the filmmakers. I felt pretty worn out by the time the movie was over. Good for Criterion for going with 4k.
