They discuss this in the documentary as well. The people who ran the studio originally were planning on releasing it. They were real big fans of the lead guy and wanted to introduce him to American audiences. They thought they had the next Bruce Lee.

Everything fell apart after the buy-out though and funding just stopped. No reason was given and the movie just didn't get completed. There was a wrap party for it (filming was done), but all the post work was set aside and left.

Got a chance to watch this last night.

Very enjoyable. It was better than I thought it would be, and probably better than it would have been if finished originally. Specifically, the score ties everything together and I can’t imagine them having done anything close to as good back in the day (although the OG end theme is great too).

Tons of really good shots of early eighties NYC too. Condition and competency of the film footage was significantly better than expected (and much better than Miami Connection which I love too).

Don’t sleep on this if you are on the fence.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this film. It's everything you want in a ninja movie from 1984. Yes, it is a low budget affair, but it absolutely oozes with charm. It is wildly entertaining from start to finish. My hat is off to the folks who were able to cobble together not only a coherent plot, but a script that is genuinely a lot of fun. The dubbing and music are perfect. Had I not known it was recorded just this past year, I would have believed it to be an authentic English dub of a foreign-made film from the 80's. It is the perfect film for a night with friends and a case of beer.

Finally got around to watching New York Ninja over the long weekend.

Citizen Kane? Garbage. The Godfather? Unwatchable trash. Casablanc-who? Naw, New York Ninja is the finest movie ever put to film. Period, full stop. I will hear no more debate over this matter.

That's just the chapter selection. That's how Vinegar Syndrome does it.

Watched this couple months ago and I was blown away by the PQ. One of the best release when it comes to picture compression, I mean holy Jesus!! The movie itself was helluva good time from the beginning to very last minute. Two thumbs up to VS for all the efforts!!

My "New York Ninja" played fine but I had this problem with two other Vinegar Syndrome discs recently. They both froze around an hour and 15 minutes in and then skipped ahead a few minutes, on two players (Oppo and PS4). Very frustrating, but VS sent me replacements with my next order. Let them know -- their customer service rep was super helpful and I'm guessing that they might be seeing several cases of this 1:15 freezing (is it a layer change thing, or maybe a recent manufacturing issue? I have no idea).
