Superior Picture.

Superior Sound.

And not necessarily in that order.

For the first time since the glorious days of LaserDisc, every release can have a PCM soundtrack, and should.

back when I bought my PS3 (Nov. 2006) and then bought a HDTV a few months later, then I really got into it. I love Sony and since Sony was backing BD that was my pick as well (not to mention BD is better in every aspect)

A year ago I was debating whether to buy a 360 or a PS3. I did a lot of research because although I had a PS2, I later found the X-Box to actually be a better system at the time because the X-Box games would mostly be put out in 720p or even 1080i, they were 16x9 and in 5.1 sound which none of my PS2 games were.

So, I was pretty interested to find out who had the edge for what I wanted and needed. I was aware of both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD but the fact that the PS3 had an on-board player and an HDMI out capable of 1080p was miles ahead of the 360 which lacked all of those features. Sure, there were more 360 games around because the box came out a year earlier but that wasn't too much of an issue for me.

Even though I wasn't a huge Sony fan, when it came to Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, I figured that because of the Sony name (more loyal fans than Toshiba over all), more studios backed Blu' and the specs were stronger than HD-DVD, that Blu would eventually win out. I advised everyone I knew who was interested in HD, to either wait a bit or buy Blu. Months ago, I speculated that if things stayed the course (before Warner's switch) that HD-DVD would die when Microsoft pulled all support of the format once their bugged Download program was up. Luckilly we may not have to wait that long.

Look, I'd be peed off if I was an early adopter who was convinced by some goofy kid in Circuit City or Futureshop, that HD-DVD was the best and I later was stuck with a boat anchor but the format war should never have happened to begin with. Like I said, I've never been a huge Sony fan (lots of bad experiences) but the facts spoke for themselves. The specs were right there and I made an educated decision rather than listen to some clown working part time in a chain store. Glad I did the reseach, called 360 tech support, PS3 tech support, got my answers, read the messages here and on that other site and ultimately went the right way. HD-DVD's long loading times, the badly bugged combo discs that never worked right even according to Digital Bits - and never got fixed just killed the idea of even buying a combo player for me. Not to mention the fact that by buying a combo player for the movies I wanted, I'd just be contributing to the war's on-going lifespan. HD-DVD just wasn't a viable option for me. Just didn't make sense.

I went blu because I wanted the PS3 for its games, backwards compatibility, and the blu-ray player.

Default Here my story...

I was a Playstation fan since PS1.

I was a blu-ray fan since 2005.

I was in the line during cold weather in Nov. 16 2006 before launch day of the PS3. But i didnt get a chance to pick it up cause it was sold only to 34 ppl and i was only the 36th person in line but however i won the bid on ebay the day after for PS3 at the price of $800.00, I was so crazy cause i wanted it so bad.

But it was not til Dec. 1st, 2007 when i got my PS3 at home and then i bought a new HDTV on the same day in favor of HDMI connection for blu-ray quality requirement.

PS3 is the reason i got blu-ray in the first place but however i been a fan of blu-ray since 2005 cause of the capacity of the disc size compare to regular DVD.

I never heard of HD-DVD til summer 2007 and I never pay any good attention to them cause i know for the fact it only holds 15-to-30GB. and a current rival to blu-ray.

Screw HD-DVD!! Blu-ray is the way to Go!!!

to be honest....if the ps3 hadnt come with a blu ray player......id still be waiting on the sidelines....it was a very smart move by sony to put a nex gen optical drive into the console...i believe if MS had put an hd dvd drive into the 360 in the first place...the tides would be in favor of inferior format...

PS3, 50gig capacity, scratch resistant hardcoat, smaller case, and a cool looking blu logo.

1) 50 gig vs 30 gig...do the math
2) PS3 - a gift for myself

After I got the PS3, I just had to keep on supporting blu-ray to ensure my investment was worth it. It's like a drug.

Ditto here, took it a while for the streaming stuff and dvd upconverting to come along, but now that it has it has become the focus of my entertainment system, sorry TiVo.

My last console prior to the PS3 was Pong, seriously.

Basically PS3+BD made the purchase possible, I wouldn't have purchased either without the other.

edit: Disney too, we are Disney freaks and my kids are 4 and 6, if Disney was HD DVD we wouldn't be BD.

several reasons I guess

1. My friend worked at Sony so saw the PS3 a long time before most people (well in europe anyhow) and thus saw Blu ray and was excited to get some for myself

2. HD-DVD didnt seem to exist in the shops so heard about blu-ray long before I even knew HD-DVD was even out there.

3. Always wanted my own playstation.

4. Not a big fan of Toshiba as they dont have the reputation that Sony has. Dont like the forced choice in buying toshiba for a HD player. Blu has many manufactuers selling players.

5. I hate the xbox. I think it looks cheap and nasty and unfinished (like the rest of the microsoft product range )

6. I wanted the best.

7. Though quite shallow, having a toshiba product in my home cinema setup would have look quite out of place. Dont they make toasters?

and so on and so on

My first HD movie was Serenity 15/03/2007 (HD DVD).
Problem in europe, no cheap HD DVD players.
My first BluRay 16/04/2007

Check later which format I choose.
  • Sony Playstation 3 (Not cheap but good for gaming console, SACD, Media streaming, can save media files in HDD, W-lan, Lan)
  • friend promise some help, if I buy PS3
  • I listen much music, so I checked my fave artist music companies. Many of them was in Sony. Not to mention that cute nose Colombian.
  • Higher capacity in Disk

I jumped on the blu bandwagon early Novemeber of 07. I initially was going to go HD dvd because of the "ma and pop" relationship to the word HD and DVD, so the next best thing must be HD DVD. (yes i knew this was not true, i just wanted to pick the format that was going to win out in the end) But, I sat down, looked at studio support. I saw that disney had full backing in blu. That is all it took for me. Sure I was pissed that I would not be able to get top gun, or transformers, or borne movies. But I figured eventually they would come around. So, bottom line........ Studio support is why I went blu.

I didn't start looking at HD until we had an HDTV from our old store in our house. I thought it might be good to get a player for it so it could be used for its intended purpose (previously it served as a video game monitor in our old LAN center).
At the time, I didn't know anything about Blu-Ray vs HDDVD. I held off for a long time until fall of 07 when we got a PS3 as our blu-ray player.
Why?
Major reason: with blu-ray pulling ahead, it seemed like a safer bet of the two.

Minor reason #1: as a professional in the computer software industry, I learned by then that HDDVD was backed by Microsoft, which scored negatively against them. I know from experience what Microsoft has done to the Computer industry, and I would not enjoy contributing to their involvement in the CE industry.

Minor reason #2: It made a good excuse to buy a PS3. :-) Console Gaming isn't that important to me to buy one otherwise. Blu-Ray gave me an excuse to try PS3 games.

Minor reason #3: The name "blu-ray" is just cool. lol. I admit it. that was shallow and illogical motivation for me. Not a big one, but it was there. :-D

My son's PS3. After visiting him over the holidays, I got sold on blu. So I went to Sam's Club and bought the Sony BDP-S301 player. Why? I needed a player with 5.1 audio analog outputs because my AV receiver is not HDMI ready but has 5.1 analog audio inputs. That way I can still get the umcompressed audio from the LPCM 5.1 tracks found on many BDs and keep my older AV receiver. I do have the BD player connected directly to my 47 in. Vizio LCD through HDMI of course.

Before the holidays the outcome of the Blu vs HD-DVD was still anybody's guess. But, when I saw that the LPCM 5.1 tracks were available on many BDs and none on HD-DVDs, I thought that might help to give Blu-ray a favorable lead over HD. So, I bet my money on the Blu horse
