We'll hold onto the DVD, unless the price goes low enough that it's just too tempting not to get it. We won't be rewatching the series for a few years at least anyway, and don't exactly trust Mill Creek's competence in the replication department anymore. Be sure to test your discs for scratches that cause skipping.
Correct, the two crossover episodes (Murder, She Wrote and Simon & Simon) are not the full two-parters; the stories wrap up in each individual episode.

I find it ironic that Mill Creek included the extra Inside the Ultimate Crime Crossover, considering the crossovers are not on the disc

Also, this is a good post detailing the differences between the other two Blu-ray releases for Magnum.

That's exactly what I'd call this. The encoding is probably better on the overseas releases, but this isn't MC's worst encoding job. It looks blocky in the backdrop at times but it's not a dealbreaker, and the lower price of this for US consumers makes it much more appealing than the imports.

You can get for $90 (after 10% coupon-you need to wait until released to use. preorders excluded) at deepdiscount.com. That is the cheapest I have found thus far.
Don't forget you can get an additional 8% on top of DDD's coupons if you use Paypal cashback. I didn't even know it was in there but if you go into your PP account and go to "Deals" I think, there are cashback stores including DDD. Click through to the DDD site using Paypal's link, then order using PP.

Also you may be able to order now and use the coupon because some of DDD's upcoming releases are orderable with their coupons in the week or two before release date.

How does the Blu-ray set compare to the streaming versions on Amazon prime? More compressed?

wow, given some reviews I've seen on youtube I was expecting a lot better ratings, those are quite low.

Best Buy "cancelled" my order on Monday because of 'Payment issues'. I used my Best Buy card, which has an available balance of $983.00. Then I realized the street date isn't until 3/29 so now I wonder if someone's trying to scam me.

That's true for Simon and Simon, but not true for the Murder She Wrote crossover. The MSW crossover you don't find out who the bad guy is until the end of the MSW (2nd) episode.

I'll be curious about 2 things:

Subtitles - I'll believe it when I see it.
Compression - I have the UK region B release, the episodes are 8 GB or 10 GB on that set. I'll be curious to see how big the episodes are on the Millcreek set.

UK set doesn't have subtitles. So the US would be nice to get (if it really has them), but not if the episodes are a lot more compressed.

Go Magnum 1980!

Same. I was about to get the U.S. release, but figured it would be a downgrade and not sure it would be worth it just to have a Region A release and some new extras.

According to the site review, the Mill Creek release is 30 discs and the UK release is 37 discs. And the MC release adds a couple of Rockford Files eps as well. The UK release has an extra "Murder She Wrote" ep, but it's in SD.

The issue with MC's discs typically isn't file size and bit-rate -- it's their encoding that typically fails them. That's why you can't judge their quality based on the file size. That's not the problem. They'll roll out a file size for a movie that should be just fine -- with a strong bit-rate -- but their in-house encoding can fluctuate from being solid (like Krull) to outright sucking (like Sheena, or Like Father Like Son).

This is not nearly the worst they've done, it's just probably not as competent as the various international releases. I haven't seen the UK or French releases, I did have the Elephant Incredible Hulk, and MC's Magnum encoding is not on the same level as that (or Universal's domestic Hulk release). On the other hand, at least for me, it's not awful -- it's decent, and it costs a hell of a lot less if you're in the U.S.

If you've already got one of those international releases, I definitely wouldn't bother with this. But for those of us who didn't want to spend hundred(s) on the imports, it's a much more economical package that's perfectly serviceable.

Yes, believe it or not, the subtitles are real. lol

Thanks for sharing my review here! I've been watching an episode every night since my set came over a week ago and I'm still in love with it. HUUUUUUGE step up from my old DVDs. Not really sure what's up with this site's review, but I do notice that they always give negative reviews for Mill Creek products. 5 hours of extras, including an hour of newly-shot material and it only ranks a 2.5 out of 5? Can't help but wonder if that score would be the same if Universal's name was on the set instead of Mill Creek's.

People will pick the set apart (as they do), but it's the best box set Mill Creek has released on the market so far, topping both Charlie's Angels and 30 Rock, both of which were ambitious and have been popular sellers. I've been covering Mill Creek products professionally for years now, and this is a big leap ahead for them. People expecting perfection will be disappointed, but I think all reasonable and measured expectations should be met. Low expectations will be surpassed.

My copy is due today. Would've gotten it yesterday but my building isn't open on Sundays. Best Buy is making Amazon look bad. Really bad.

My expectations for Mill Creek product are automatically pre-set to low. Having said that, I doubt that any other label (or even the studio itself) would've pressed for any kind of extensive restoration work for series that spanned 8 seasons. I think I'll be mostly satisfied with this as, as long as the episodes aren't the syndicated cuts and no music has been altered.

I have the French Blu-ray complete series set of The A-Team, which does look fantastic. Maybe the French were able to convince Universal to remaster the series, which was only 5 seasons. In any case, I'm stoked to have The A-Team on BD even if it's from a foreign country.

The HD masters used for this set are the same ones Universal made for their HD channel and HD syndication package offerings in the early 2000's. This is the same for most of Universal's Classic 35mm shows, such as Knight Rider, Airwolf, The A-Team, Battlestar Galactica, etc. Those masters were used to make the DVD releases in the early 2000's and later, the Blu-Ray releases.

Thumbs up Bluray Release

Actually I am pretty satisfied with this release.
Its not perfect but its so much better than the DVD.
I have both of them.
Dont fret and just get them.
Unless there's a 4k release someday, this is the best quality you can find.
Super happy.
