Just picked this up. I think it may only be available in the Quebec market as it's not showing up on Amazon.ca.

A French 4K version will be released in September. It appears to be a FNAC exclusive (at least as far as the French market is concerned). See here : https://www.fr.fnac.be/a21732593/Les...sel-Blu-ray-4K

According to Fangoria, it'll be released on home video in October (probably a Janus Contemporaries disc).

Quote:
The Shrouds and the full Meet the Filmmaker interview will be available to stream on Criterion Channel starting July 8, the same day it becomes available for TVOD rentals on Apple TV, Prime Video, and Fandango at Home. A home-video release will follow this October.

Holy hell, what a tedious slog of a film this was for me to get through. I feel this way about a lot of Cronenberg films, but his characters don't act like humans; not humans in this world anyway. So much of the dialogue exchanges between 2 characters feel like 2 chatbots conversing with one another. This movie has sentences I'd never thought I'd see. Stuff like "your grief is causing your teeth to rot", and "your thighs are delicious", and so many others. The premise for this feels like something that would have been in Black Mirror's scrapyard.

I kept hoping it would get better, but it got worse. The sex scene between
[Show spoiler]the main character and his sister-in-law
has got to be the dumbest thing I've seen in a minute, and more or less cemented my dislike of the film. I found some of the ways it approached grief to be interesting, but I feel like a lot of that got lost in the meandering, nearly aimless direction of the film, as well as the film's tangents dealing with A.I. and the vandalism. Usually I'm more tolerant of movies, but it's safe to say this one just wasn't for me. I still encourage others to check it out for themselves though, especially if you're a fan of Cronenberg.

Rewatched again the other night now that it's on Criterion Channel, and like all Cronenberg, it gets better on rewatch. Watching it the same night Elon's Grok AI went full "Hunny" and his plans to implement Grok into his Teslas...I mean cmon, this movie is already aging well lol. One of the few films that truly captures the 2020s in all it's madness, so absurd you can't help but laugh (and this movie really is Cronenberg's funniest). Quickly becoming one of my faves of his!

Any chance Janus Contemporaries does a 4k for the first time?

Disappointed that Criterion has now announced this as an October 21, 2025 release, but only on Blu-ray and DVD.

Same. It's an electric film, extremely funny and devious. Intellectually visceral, THE SHROUDS will get better with time.

Does Criterion also hold the 4K rights? For Europe, does anyone knows if we can expect Second Sight or Arrow to release their UHDs?

ps. on a happier note, Criterion's A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE 4K looks amazing.

Was going to blind buy this one, but probably gonna give it a pre-watch first.

I think my opinion is in the minority, as I feel I've seen more people like it than not. I've seen some say it's a funny film, one person above even saying extremely funny. While there is some humor, I wouldn't really say its a funny film. That makes me feel like I'm missing something, or looking at the film wrong. Watching it on Criterion channel, or VOD may not be a bad idea though. If you do happen to blind-buy instead, you could wait till it's half-off during the B&N November sale, where it'll be $14.99.

This is really one of Cronenberg's weakest imho, mostly of interest to completists of his work.

I found this interminably boring and not up to the usual Cronenberg standards.

Sadly I've been hearing a lot of this, and it makes me all the more apprehensive. So yeah, I'll probably just rent.

To make matters worse, the theatrical prints didn’t have any closed captioning
