They'll sometimes license catalog titles for streaming (like a very obscure soccer anime from 2001 that had no fansubs), but home video? Yeah, they don't care anymore, even a couple years before the merger. See also: All the stuff that went OOP.

As far as we know, Maison Ikkoku is in licensing hell, so that's probably not happening anytime soon.

The 1999 Hunter x Hunter series seems to no longer be available for licensing due to the 2011 series. Sometimes a remake can cause a prior to work to not be available anymore.

Same thing is happening to Kenshin now. The 90s tv series was on CR and Hulu for years and once its license expired again instead of renewing it like usual they let it finally go off hulu and only the new one is on there now.

I say we got lucky with Berserk 97 & Shaman King 01's rescues because outside of Toei Animation stuff (and main Toei if we count Kamen Rider Black), we don't always see rescues of shows when reboots are happening.

Glad I still have my JoJo OVA DVDs because that probably is in licensing hell because of more than just the current series ongoing.

Isn't that the reason why Super Techno Arts (NA branch of APPP Company, the animation production company) ended up shutting down?

I feel that issue could have been corrected with some editing or redraws but that would have to have been done from Japan's end.

The other main issues is those OVAs are split between production companies with Shueisha being sole producer on the episodes done in the 90s (second half of the story) while the 2000s half had other companies with APPP being the main one and they had since closed after Nomura's passing 4 years ago.

I'm gonna be stuck with my Media Blasters DVD sets until I die, aren't I?

It seems like they've written the original series off in Japan too.

It's been OOP in Japan for a long time, the last DVD release was in December 2006. Contains the TV series, OVAs, and the movie.

A Blu-ray release was always going to be unlikely given the length of the TV series. An HD scan for 95 cel-animated episodes would be how expensive and time-consuming? What even is the longest cel-animated anime Aniplex gave a Blu-ray release for?
