Let us know what you think of the 3DBR version, even if you think it sucks! I believe it’s still available on Vudu for rental in 3D. It’s a polarizing film, so you’ll be in good company if it’s not to your liking. haha.

Anyway, I just picked this up and gave it a watch last night on my 3D projector setup. I have to say, I loved it. Just lots of wonderful black and white cinematography and sumptuous shots of a rural Americana, set in some indistinct time period--felt like mid-late 19th century. I don't know if it was supposed to be set in the South, but it had a southern gothic vibe to me. Forests, fields, lakes, gothic mansions, horses and carriages. So many wonderful shots, and making full use of 3D. Definitely reminded me of Bergman in places. The audio approach was pretty unique and very successful, IMO. No dialogue is spoken in the film, yet it's not a silent movie. The ambient sound of the scenes is always there and often quite immersive. Some fantastical elements are in the story and are there in some shots, and the special effects are quite impressive and fit very well tonally with the rest of the film. You are NOT brought out of the film by cheap, generic CGI. I will admit I couldn't really follow the narrative, and I daresay that the filmmakers weren't really going for traditional storytelling that would be easily accessible to a wide audience. Today, I just went and read the summary of the Greek myth of Leda and the Swan, and that gives me a much better framework for understanding the whole work. I think it would have made the film better if I had read that first--but hey, I'm more than happy to watch it again with that knowledge! I really enjoyed this, and I hope more filmmakers in the future will use 3D in this fashion--not as an afterthought or a gimmick, but as another (powerful) tool in the filmmaker's arsenal to convey their unique vision. |

LEDA is very much an art film.
Without knowing the ancient mythology on which the story is based it is likely to confuse most viewers. While there is sexualization in the film, it certainly doesn't titillate -- it's about rape, after all. The 3D varies from extremely deep and mood-enhancing to practically nonexistent, and that is by design. I find the movie well worth repeated viewing as a means of seeing how story and picture with no dialogue can create an atmosphere and draw one into the film. Escapist entertainment it is not! |
