The money that Millennium has shelled out for these two Hellboy movies, they could've spent on the one trilogy capper made by Guillermo del Toro, which might have turned out to be more successful than the first two movies, considering how much love the 2nd one got once it was discovered by more people .
But oh well, I think it's too late now. |

I feel like Hellboy as a concept in general has much more niche than mainstream appeal. I think it's a bit too weird or out there for most audiences. GDT's first movie didn't even gross 100Mil, so another studio had to step in to handle the sequel, which only did 168Mil. Obviously a lot better than the first movie, but a pittance really compared to other successful comic book movies. Fast forward 11 year and the next movie makes even less than the first one at only 55Mil.
I guess they want to keep the rights but i feel the writing was on the wall since the first movie. |

It's a very weird concept and when you put money into it. Gets dangerous cuz they're not easy to make.
It would be interesting if they gave del Toro a chance for a part 3, it'd probably be worse for it in a theatrical sense. Doesn't seem like people cared for the last Hellboy. And to now cap his trilogy after ANOTHER HB film by someone. It'd be weird. It could work on a streaming maybe, in a perfect world disregarding why it wouldn't be made at all now. You know? Oh, well. |

But you may have a point that this type of character, no matter how well it's portrayed, will only appeal to a niche audience, much like Evil Dead, Tron, or other smaller genre films with a smaller audience. Army of Darkness, that movie struggled in theaters, yet has a good following among horror fans. A smaller budget being the result, compared to the $120 million Del Toro wanted for Hellboy 3. A story about the Devil's son going against his father and trying to help humanity instead of bringing the apocalypse, despite the prophecy saying it's inevitable, could've been interesting to see in Hellboy 3. Where Hellboy has to accept being the beast of the apocalypse and then try to destroy the evil source that gave him those powers. Although that's one reason I liked Hellboy 2019 too, as it covers a prophecy apocalypse in the final scenes, so even though del Toro and Pearlman didn't get to return, it kind of hints at the end of Hellboy's story in a slight way IMO, as he grows the full horns with the fire halo, and has to resist taking over the world. Del Toro needed $120 million to work on Hellboy 3, and Pearman, even in 2023, said he's still interested. Del Toro said a Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign wouldn't be enough to fund the film. |

Unfortunately Del Toro is wrong as a Kickstarter could have easily made his budget… One million people giving $120.00 pays for the project, the production company would have allowed a third film if Del Toro spent 60-70 million of their money. Kickstarter would only have to raise half the 120 million so 500,000 donations of $120.00 or a million donations of $60.00…likely a large number of people would give under $100 but some would easily give $1000.00 or more, especially to have their name thrown in the credits as a producer. Even if he fell short he could have filmed and shown the bulk of the film to fans and the Production company to squeeze another 10-15 million over budget with a trade option to forgo his paycheck if it didn’t make “X” amount of dollars.

I'll forever be bummed that Del Toro wasn't given the chance to finish his trilogy, even in something like comic form. I often wonder if the $120 million he estimated it would require to make would be more or less by today's standards. It's over 15 years since Golden Army, so either inflation would mean it would cost more today, or technological advancements might mean it would cost less. Looking at something like The Creator, which looked fantastic, and only cost about $80 million to make. I know there's a lot of differences- crew size, less makeup/practical effects, etc., but still. I'm sure there's workarounds that could be made for some things.
I'd happily back a Kickstarter if he launched it today. I've always wanted the conclusion to the story. Nobody thus far seems to have really understood or proved they could do Hellboy quite like Del Toro (not that there's been that many attempts, but still). It just felt like it had a perfect blend of all the right components- Del Toro, Perlman, Doug Jones, the practical effects, etc. I know it's one of those "you just have to come to terms with it" kind of things, but with every new attempt we get, it just feels like things would've been better served devoting time and effort into that 3rd movie. Ah, well. We'll see how this one goes. |

Don Bluth was hoping to make a Dragon's Lair animated movie for a niche audience but put it into theaters, and in 2015, pitched on Kickstarter, but after it didn't meet its goal of under $1 million, he had to jump over to the more flexible IndieGoGo fundraiser to produce the short yet incomplete pitch trailer, mixed with animation but still frames too. Then the project was passed to Netflix for a live-action version, and that has been in limbo ever since sadly, now going on 9+ years. But Dragon's Lair is a niche project, where fans of the arcade would find it most appealing more than the mainstream. Don Bluth's films overall, are often niche genre including Secret of NIHM, which is fine, although needs to consider home video as a safer bet over theatrical, as he found out with Titan AE back in 2000. 24 years ago now. Don Bluth is now 86 and hopefully lives to 100 so he might be able to see a live-action Netflix version of Dragon's Lair. So $120 million doesn't seem impossible, but definitely would put things in perspective as the message has to get out there in less than 30 days to fund it. A tough task. I'd back it. I think he'd reach $20 million, but then a studio would have to step in for the remainder. Quote:

Imma be real with you and say that I watched the 2019 Hellboy on a day where I was horribly sick and couldn't get through it (I wasn't sick because of the movie, at least.....I don't think so), so I need to rewatch it. Only made it a little over halfway, I think. I remember liking it well enough, but I love the Del Toro movies, especially Golden Army, and it's so hard for me not to compare them, especially the performances. Not entirely fair on my part, I know, but still. I thought Harbour did a good enough job with what he was given, but I really missed Abe. From what I remember, it was missing that little bit of charm and innocence that he brought to it.

I'd say it's worth a rewatch if you can to see what happens at the end especially. But I agree, Hellboy 2 is one of my favorite action/fantasy movies of all time. Prince Nuada made for a great villain too, with his giant Plant monster, his sidekick monster goon, and of course his martial arts and deadly spear, not to mention the Golden army of mechanical, supernatural robots and the Tooth Fairy gremlins. Great stuff and I liked the link between him and his sister. I saw that one twice in theaters. |

This is why you get someone like Guillermo del Toro to make these things. Hellboy 2 has some of the coolest creatures and a lot were just hanging out in the background. Dude has an insanely creative mind and would come up with 3000 creature designs just in his sleep.
