Kerry Conran, the writer, director and art director of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, was evidently influenced by the old Superman serial cartoons and in fact, based his robots on one of the early Superman shorts. Loved that movie, but it was pretty obvious to anyone who saw the early Superman cartoons where his inspiration came from.

Somebody mentioned a previous version with commentaries, did I read that right? What format was it?

With this and the seldom-seen THE HAUNTING OF JULIA both getting releases this spring, I know that miracles still happen!

If we buy the 5 Film 4k Collection, would we still need to buy this?

They're purportedly new transfers, but no indication the many issues already cited in this thread were fixed. I'd just wait for the reviews or comments from knowledgable people.

Chances are the blu-rays included in the 5 Film 4k Collection are just recycled from the old Superman Anthology blu-ray set, which did not have the shorts restored from the OCNs like this new set does. And while the source of the shorts for the 5 Film 4k Collection have not been officially confirmed (to my knowledge) by the studio, judging by WB’s habits I’m willing to bet the shorts are from the old blu-rays.

If you don’t care about the quality of the presentation of the shorts, and just want to have them in general, then you could probably just stick with the 5 Film 4k Collection. The shorts are certainly watchable on the old blu-rays, and I’ve enjoyed watching them repeatedly for years that way…

But the prospect of having these shorts presented in the best possible way with this new standalone release is absolutely worth the price of admission as far as I’m concerned!

And I’m also sincerely hoping that any errors are fixed as well… And while I normally wait for reviews before purchasing, my excitement for this release got the better of me, and I ended up pre-ordering anyway…

I suppose I could always cancel or return the set if it turns out to be a disaster… Keeping the fingers crossed it won’t be!

I'm confused; weren't the Fleischer shorts already included as part of the Reeve-era Anthology set, released a few years ago? I could've sworn some animated cartoons were put in among the set's extras.

The extras listed for the Superman 4K set are the same as what's on the prior Blu-ray set, so the Blu discs are probably the same with SD cartoons and all.

Pretty much.

Unrelated to the cartoons but related to films, studios need to realize they can make just as much from standard Blu-ray buyers if the Blu-ray copies included have the new 4K remasters of the films. You think the Superman 4K set would have those like Warner did for Poltergeist and Training Day.
