I guess no unrated cut of the first film will ever exist? (Knowing that it had a few scenes trimmed to get a lower rating)

Yeah definitely not a fan of the cover either considering it's a HUGE spoiler. I mean - most people probably know how it ends by now but still. Hopefully the individual discs inside have the original cover art.

The description on the Shout Factory page says The Ring Two will include both unrated and theatrical cuts:

There was an original cut of the film that was supposedly arond 2 hrs and 25 mins long, but it was reduced to its current runtime of ~1 hr 55mins. Apparently there was a whole subplot with the actor Chris Cooper as a murderer/pedo that was completely cut from the film. From the sound it, I think it was a good decision to cut it, and leave the ending as is. I wouldn't mind seeing this cut though.

Quote:
Chris Cooper originally had an interesting role in The Ring but it was cut after test screenings were left baffled as to why he was not more prominent in the plot.

Cooper played a murderer (or a pedophile) seeking Rachel's help as a reporter in clearing his name. She knows he is guilty and refuses the assignment. At the end of the film, she needs to find someone to watch her son's copied videotape thus avoiding his death, so she passes on the tape to Cooper's character, believing him to be guilty and therefore expendable.

His presence threw up more questions than it answered so his cameo was dropped and a more ambiguous climax was inserted.

Not a fan of the sequels but love the idea that eventually I'll be able to get the first one as a stand alone release now, love the movie and have been itching to watch lately actually but held off knowing (hoping) sooner or later we'd get it on 4k disc...it's long overdo IMO!

Sounds like his character was invented simply to give the film a “happy” ending for the US remake. Glad they eventually went back to the ambiguity of the original.

There was also more explicit violence,
[Show spoiler]one scene for sure when they killed Samara, originally she was hit over the head with a rock and then dumped in the well,
a minor detail I know but with possibly other scenes too that were trimmed.

I feel like even just replacing the green with a light blue helps the cover.

I think they lost the rights to it because it downright disappeared off of streaming services and the BD is OOP

I think you're right. I like what you did there. Looks more Jap horror and less "Tommyknockers" without the green alien space-glow. The green also looks kinda like a noxious cloud of neurotoxin that leaked out of a zombie canister in a Return of the Living Dead sequel.

It's that Halloween Collection of Curse, H20, and Resurrection again. Maybe The Ring (2002) will get a separate 4K release in the future by Paramount just like Halloween H20.

I don't think the art is especially well drawn or anything, but I'm a slut for anything dark green on black. That's why my soul belongs to the marketing campaign for Batman Forever.

Thanks I order from Bull Moose all the time, nice to see others giving them a shout, pun intended.

The Dreamworks blu ray really went all in on the green colour timing, far too much in my view. The DVD looked more nuanced.

Its like they just applied a blanket of green on the BD, and it removed all traces of actual skin tones.

Yeah will be interesting to see how the color looks on the 4K with HDR.

The first American film is great. Ring Two is definitely a step down but was a serviceable sequel IMO. Rings, however... yikes. I had the displeasure of seeing that one in theaters.
