I wonder who holds the negative, if it's TFC, the entity that controls Intermedia's library, or if Paramount holds the negative.

I remember being surprised that Paramount held the negatives for King Kong and Murder on the Orient Express, even though I thought both had been financed by foreign entities. (Incorrectly, in the case of Orient).

Since the Shout disc credits Paramount as copyright holder, along with IMF, I wonder if Paramount holds the negative, but allowed Shout to handle preparing the UHD release.
The indies encode their own stuff, period. Whether Paramount or Shout or whoever completed the 4K remaster I couldn't tell you, and is not what I'm talking about anyway. Just saying that the actual compression of that master to disc will not have been done by Paramount, not for this or any other title they've licensed out. Not how it works, as the whole point of an indie licensing it is that they do most of the donkey work themselves, you dig?

Had Paramount handled the encoding, K-19 definitely wouldn’t look this good in 4K. (I assume so as Shout’s UHDs since close to, if not a year have been largely outstanding). Shout apparently employs Duplitech for their 4K encoding.

Just got my 4K, it looks great. Definitely an upgrade over my DVD of course; not sure why I skipped the blu-ray, I guess this movie left my memory for a while.

The DVD-era special features on the included blu-ray are missing the subtitles the DVD had, and the ripped files are bigger than those same special features from the DVD rip, even though they're the same resolution. Odd. I'm sure that's not unique to this, though.

This is a good companion piece to go with K-19.

The legacy features prolly look worse too despite being the same resolution. That Shout difference™️

This looks fantastic. There appears to a wee bit grain management most likely baked in the remaster by Paramount but overall it looks solid. I am glad this was outsourced to Indie label otherwise could have looked wonky.

Paramount AFAIK only handled scanning of the OCN while Shout finished the rest. BTW, Paramount no longer owns distro rights as they expired before Shout purchased the Intermedia/Largo catalog.

Paramount's logo is on the UHD, along with Shout and Largo. If Paramount's right's had lapsed, I would think Shout would have left Paramount's logo off.

The Shout packaging also says the film is copyright 2002 by Paramount Pictures and IMF Internationale Medien und Film GmbH & Co. 2 Produktions KG. The fact that Paramount is jointly credited as a copyright holder suggests they co-financed the film and hold joint rights to it in perpetuity.

Just to add, the Shout UHD for Point Break has no mention of 20th Century Fox or Warner Bros, the former distributors, in the fine print. Fox distributed that film originally, and Warners had it for a while more recently. The presence of the Paramount info on K-19 suggests it's still current.

Paramount may have some theatrical and streaming rights, plus remaining ones in the UK/Australia/France, but they lost most of them years ago when the BDs went OOP. Even the Paramount digital copies got taken down and replaced with one credited to Shout.

I know almost everyone here uses anonymous usernames. Some users seem to know who a lot of the regulars really are, but I'm not that well informed. If you're someone directly involved with the film, who knows all this firsthand, and I'm being a dork in contradicting you, I definitely apologize.

That said, it would be weird for Shout to put the Paramount logo on the UHD and to put that Paramount and IMF jointly hold the copyright to the film, unless Paramount really does own a stake in it in perpetuity.

Bear in mind that SBK is no more an 'insider' than I am and mixes in a healthy dose of conjecture and guesswork with whatever he posts. Heck, I can't find anything that says Shout actually "purchased" the Intermedia/Largo catalogue, just that the rights to those films ended up with a company called Zelus Film Holdings and it's they who Shout are licensing from.

FYI: The Shout 4K disc starts with Paramount intro.

The 4K disc is imo is a looker. The movie is good as well in spite of the subject matter, casting non-Russians as Russians and all of them talking in English. It is actually quite well written, directed and acted IMO.

Streaming rights is with Paramount at the moment at least in the UK. Some of these have been silently turning 4K DV few months on streaming (iTunes) before or after physical release depending on the licensing agreements.

I'm usually not a big fan of Shout's mastering, but this is one I where I was never really happy with how it looked on the Paramount BD. I had a $50 Amazon gift card from work (they give me these for doing oncall) and decided to pick this up. I watched the 4KBD Friday night and I thought it looked really nice. I had no issues with scratches/skipping either thankfully. I had sworn off 4KBD because I kept getting discs that would skip. I did give the disc a thorough wipedown with a microfiber cloth before I played it though too which could have helped.

Great movie and I was very happy with the purchase.

One thing I do like about Shout - they seem like they master alot more mainstream films vs the other boutiques. And so I find myself buying more of theirs.

Can someone please post a screenshot of the Title Menu nothing shows up on mine and I can’t start the movie

so this is what the title looks like on my Samsung UBD-KM85C and my brand new Panasonic DP-UB450 both have updated firmware

https://imgur.com/a/uljwJGI

This is what it looks fine on my Xbox One, and plays fine.

Any recomendations, should I try a replacement through Shout?
