Kind of a silly question to specifically ask Discotek fangirls, lol.

Robert just posted an update about Macross:

Quote:
Greetings, Backers!

Just wanted to give you a quick update on our preproduction progress so far.

We have received most of the raw film transfers from Japan (just a few minor elements yet to come) and the work of massaging them has begun.

We've also received almost all of the artwork and settei and are assembling them into the artbook.
First drafts of the subtitles will be going out to the proofreading team early next month.

In other news, Natsumi is currently in Japan and is meeting Mikimoto-sensei at an undisclosed location to discuss the new Macross II artwork.

You're aware that AnimEigo didn't license very much this century, right? Also many of their licenses expired ages ago. The selection is projected to grow if you read the FAQ.
Quote:
Q: Will you be licensing new titles?

A: Yes! We plan to start slowly, but by 2025 we hope to release around one new title per month, give or take.
https://www.animeigo.com/post/the-an...transition-faq

Doesn't sound like a lot, but it's much more than what AnimEigo did most of this century. Like look at the following collector DVD checklist by Tweeg.

So it sounds like Whole Grain Pictures will be handling all of the live action stuff in terms of labeling. Hope there is some Japanese films in the near future. Also noticed 47 Ronin is still up on DVD. I wonder if that license is expiring soon, and if not, would love to see an upgrade of that to Blu-ray.

Um-yes I do, I've been collecting and watching anime since 2001 and I'm quite aware of what they do and don't have but Animeigo has more titles than that tiny amount listed.

You must have missed the part where I said licenses expired. Here's what their website looked like 10 years ago.
https://web.archive.org/web/20140204...products/anime

And before the MediaOCD takeover.
https://web.archive.org/web/20240331...o.com/products

Not much of a difference. So why make that comment only now?

Unfortunately we only have DVD rights to that title.

Fantastic news. I look forward to increased output from Animeigo and what can be obtained.

This is the thing that excites me the most, especially given how we really need more companies actively licensing catalog content. It would be nice to see AnimEigo be much more active. Though given how MediaOCD also works on Discotek's releases, I'm worried they may stretch themselves too thin. Hoping for the best.

I do wonder if AnimEigo may end up rescuing some of Discotek's OOP titles that went OOP simply because of concerns about warehouse space, and they weren't selling fast enough.

The idea of having a "second Discotek" is really cool even if the release output won't be nearly as much. For all we know maybe there are some shows that are available that Justin wants that Mr Discotek did not want to put money in.

I do hope Justin and co. find a way to differentiate AnimEigo’s releases from Discotek’s. I’d really like to see them cook up something wholly unique. It’d be boring if the only difference between them was a logo.

update from the macross KS about animeigo website:

Quote:
As most of you already know, Justin Sevakis of MediaOCD has assumed command of AnimEigo; while Natsumi and I are going to keep on doing some anime limited-edition projects like Macross II, he has taken over the rest of the company and will henceforth be responsible for growing it into a world-crushing juggernaut of commerce.

As a first step in this effort, AnimEigo.com now points to a new website, and on the homepage you will find a signup form for an email newsletter that will keep you up-to-date on his Evil Plans™ -- or at least, as much of them as you are permitted to know!

The old AnimEigo website is now crowdfunding.AnimEigo.com, and is devoted to our current and former kickstarter projects.
Glad to see the archives survived, thought we almost lost those booklet scans the only solace in not grabbing some of the exorbitantly expensive KS sets... I threw down for GSC but no more my wallet would not be able to handle ><

I was thinking the same but not really sure how they would differentiate themselves since they work on all of Discotek's stuff anyways. Even if it is a little boring just having another anime company that "feels good" to support is a nice feeling.

I've said it before a few times now - Discotek focuses on using their budgets to put as much content on every disc as possible while AnimEigo has used a lot of their budget in providing physical goods with their releases. So, honestly, Justin should keep to the AnimEigo outline, especially if he wants to maintain that distinctive separation between DT and AE. I know I'm not alone in really loving Robert's dedication to creating chipboard boxes for his premium tiers, and it'd be a crying shame if Justin were to dismiss them and the patches and the art books and the posters when he fully takes over.

Justin has this in a tweet:

Quote:
Our sister label @wholegrainpics will be handling live action films, both legacy AnimEigo titles & brand new ones.

We've just posted a thread of previews of its first title, Too Much Sleep!

Well first of all, Discotek is not my company, we just handle production and marketing. If people think of us in the same breath I'm pretty OK with that, since it's largely the same staff doing very similar things. The difference will be in the details. Discotek's tastes reflect those of its owner, and AnimEigo's will reflect ours. There's quite a bit of overlap, but they aren't the same. Additionally, we will be trying some things and making some products that Discotek hasn't been interested in, but that will be on a title by title basis.

Second of all, Robert is able to do that sort of thing on every release because AnimEigo releases only one disc every year or two, and exclusively via Kickstarter. I can't support a business on that. Additionally, several titles in the AnimEigo catalog never got Blu-rays because Robert was never able to get enough participation on the Japan side of things to make an attractive deluxe set. We definitely won't let that stand in our way!

The future AnimEigo will look different than previous AnimEigo, simply because it has to. We are different people with different tastes and priorities. Robert wanted us to take over the reigns because we share a commitment to quality and relationships with the fans. Beyond that, I don't even know what the future will look like. But it will be different, and it will be an adventure.

I'll have a few more thoughts on this in a week or so when I hold a livestream town hall. Details to come.
