This isn't some "gotcha!" type revelation you seem think it is. I doubt they were A/B roll finished, so this is just how older films are. Credits and shots with optical effects are softer because they're not "cherry" OG neg and instead 2nd or 3rd generation elements (if not even higher gen in some cases).

If you wanna be this specific, then practically every older film is just as guilty of this as well by not being 100% original, untouched OCN, so I guess we should dispute any and all claims of OCN film restorations simply on the merit of them not being fully original, right?
Yeah. you're right. AFAIK The only time they actually digitally recomposited things for a near-100% OCN restoration (as some scenes still had to be from IPs) were the Star Wars Special Editions. And some scenes for them had to be taken from IPs, particularly deleted scenes like the Biggs scene and Jabba the Hutt in A New Hope.

But on the other hand, it's disappointing that Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind had digitally recomposited credits on both 2010 and 2014 BDs. The white balance on the text is different from the rest of the image (which looks rather reddish on the 2010 disc), so it looks off as opposed to using 2nd generation or 3rd generation elements with the original composited credits.

IIRC The film grain and gate weave effect throughout the film IS native 4K for 4K versions. The unfiltered digital animation is upscaled to 4K first and then the 35mm effect gets applied after the 4K upscale.

It must be super subtle then or doesn't translate to streaming. I watched it on Apple TV in 1080p and couldn't see much grain if any. I hope it's more present on the disc.

If this gets a physical release in the UK, I think it'll be only DVD and Blu-ray.

Still have preorders for the standard and steelbook open and not sure which one I want to keep. I'm leaning towards the standard, I'm not super enthused with the steelbook cover and you don't get anything else bonus with it.

They're doing a theatrical rerelease? Any other news on this? I can't find anything on it.

FDA are listing it for 2nd August, although I don’t know how big the release will be or if they’ve acquired the rest of the back catalogue. Though based on Heron, other recent anime releases and being the summer holidays I assume it will cover the chains and be both dubbed and subbed.

This scan looks like a mess because it has two video streams, presumably one with English text and another with Japanese.

If they indeed retained the original text when you select Japanese it’d be very welcome news from Shout / GKIDS. Hopefully we’ll get confirmation for this soon and whether the encode turned out fine.

Uh.. I could be wrong and there could be certain exceptions, but all Japanese releases from GKIDS, and mostly, ALL Studio Ghibli releases from them, have pretty much always had different angle views for both English and Japanese. You watch English, you get English credits. You watch Japanese, you get Japanese credits. I don't understand your doubt.

I think the second video stream is the feature-length storyboards. The other language stream is most probably done with seamless branching on another playlist.

I doubt the storyboards would also be in 4K HDR.

I'm not sure what is meant by "this scan looks like a mess" as this plays perfectly. The default audio is English and the intertitles are also English. I haven't tried selecting the Japanese track because, well, I don't speak Japanese. I can attest the English dub is quite good.

I don't pretend to have the technical knowledge of Blu-ray structure to make any sort of judgement about the merits or otherwise of this encode. I only know this is a near perfect presentation of what I am considering top-tier Miyazaki. Beautiful film and a welcome addition to my Miyazaki collection.

I took that as meaning the report generated by the BDInfo scan rather than a knock on the presentation itself.
