Which complete 70s Blu-ray set is the best, UK Fabulous Films or USA Kino Lorber? I'm guessing Kino Lorber for the optional isolated music. I'm in the UK and multi-region.

The Kino also includes the original, shorter version of Etude In Black, missing the 'hesitation-waltz' filler (and drastic haircut) which comes with the feature-length one.

Other than that, it a case of which you can get cheaper.

It's not the proper, original shorter version that is on the Kino set. It's a version which has been pretty lazily chopped and edited to reduce the time and is similar to the original airing, but when compared to the original version, it's not the same. Many scenes are cut at different times, and are different lengths.

The only way to see the proper shorter version, as it was originally aired on TV, is in the Japanese Bluray set. That set has it in SD only, but at least it's the authentic and original airing.

I will be buying the individual release of it from Fabulous, and putting the Japanese disc in the case, so that when I do my regular beginning-to-end watch through of all 69 episodes, it's easy to access.

But those covers... ouch!
Such a brilliant idea all round. Way to go, Fabulous.

I maintain Columbo knows who did it as soon as he begins speaking to the murderer. That's why he follows him/her around the whole episode.

I don't get why not releasing a boxset.

I think Columbo's strategy is basically the same each time. He establishes who was where and when. And who was doing something they wouldn't normally do or not following their routine. He says it plainly in one episode "In my experience, people don't just forget to do that which they would normally do."

Once the other suspects are eliminated (very quickly by Columbo, sometimes before he's even entered the episode or met the killer) either by their routine being established or their deviation from it being proved plausible and consistent, whoever is left is prompted to obfuscate the truth about their own movements by making seemingly plausible claims that actually implicate them when the subterfuge turns out to be inconsistent with their character or past history. This usually reveals hidden motive, and "I'm very big on motive, sir."
