Again been an idiot and ordered this twice (having forgotten the first order) from DeepDiscount: one arrived with the slipcover (yay) and one without.

Hard to believe this has been out for almost 2 months, and it's still pushing $35. In my opinion, that's unreasonable for a movie that's nearly the same in age. It's on my Amazon list, but I'm leaving it there until it drops by at least $10.

It just seems ridiculous to me, that any studio would charge the same amount for a decades-old movie, as they do for a new release...even in 4K. And considering the fact that the few extras are ported over from the previous Blu-Ray...I can't justify the expense at this point. Now, if they had gotten Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Anna Chlumsky, and Macaulay Culkin to do either a joint retrospective or commentary, I might've had a different stance. But as it is, I'll wait until it falls to $25 or under.

Interesting. To me it's ridiculous to think that the age of the movie somehow dictates how much can be charged, regardless of work done or the quality of the product. You claim to want new extras, but that age seems the bigger issue for you.

I like lower prices too, but when looking at 10 years ago, inflation puts a vanilla $25 release from then right at the $33 average price it sits at today. Eh, we can complain, or hunt sales. Go to Pop Market on eBay, leverage the 20% off for 3 that's been in play for a month, and get it for $26.

Yeah and maybe a really old movie is actually worthless. Perhaps Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon on UHD BD should have been free!

No kidding. Free is the only suitable price for those.

My Girl didn't cost them any less to produce on 4KUHD disc than a title from 2024 or 2025. Give it time.

It’s $25.60 now on Amazon. I’m actually thinking of caving in at that price. I already have this movie digitally, but would like to buy the UHD disc solely for the HDR upgrade.

The irony here is of coursh that with new movies they just dump a pre-baked file onto a disc, it having already been finished digitally (and likely in 4K HDR too nowadays), while old shows like My Girl would need between $50K-$100K spent on them to create a new 4K transfer. I mean, Sony's US pricing is such that even if this was a 4K upscale of something shot on a VHS-C camcorder it'd still cost 35 clams, I do realise that, but in the main this is why Old Movies cost as much as New Movies: they need more work done.

At the end of the day, it's really basic supply and demand at play. Some people are actually willing to pay higher prices for "old" movies because they enjoy and find value in them (who woulda thunk?). We're also at a juncture where the physical media niche market is becoming a smaller niche every year. That means prices will have to go up on the existing customers to keep the niche market going to whatever extent. There just aren't as many buyers as there used to be. If these titles or future ones are not profitable enough to whatever the studio targets, say goodbye to them. It's that simple. There is a reason laser discs were ~5X more or whatever higher priced than VHS back in the day.

Why is this showing as "Frequently Returned Item" on Amazon? Are people having playback issues?

Both audio tracks have issues. The surround track is mono and the 5.1 track has a silent LFE.

Interesting to hear. Good thing I asked as I was just about to order it. I’m surprised things like this doesn’t get noted on the reviews of this website.

I can't imagine that's the reason for it being "frequently returned" at Amazon. The number of people that would actually notice missing LFE in "My Girl" probably would be around 5ish. (I personally want some rumble when those bees come out).

It's more likely because Amazon has the UHD incorrectly listed as "Blu-Ray" instead of "4K". I know a UHD is still a "Blu-Ray", but Amazon categorizes UHD Blu-Ray discs as "4K' and 2K Blu-Ray discs as "Blu-Ray". I can at least see people assuming it comes with a Blu-Ray.

And the UHD listing is cheaper than the standard Blu-Ray - way cheaper right now since I see a 30% off coupon on the listing.

Where's the 30% off coupon? I don't see it.
