It's a gorgeous set, and as close to definitive as we'll ever get for the film. I got it last year when Amazon very briefly knocked about €40 off the price. The box is huge! It's like a board game. Maybe one day they'll release a cheaper, smaller disc only set without the books, posters etc.

A lovingly crafted fan edit that gets us as close as we'll probably ever come to Lynch's original vision. I was lucky enough to catch Kyle MacLachlan presenting Dune at the Vidiots Lynch tribute here in LA recently, and he shared some fascinating behind-the-scenes details I'd never heard before, which I mention in more detail in another thread.
As for the Specediver Cut specifically, it's focused on bringing the characters and overall tone closer to Herbert's novel while fixing some of the original's pacing problems. That's just my take though, and I'm sure others here could give you a much more detailed breakdown of what makes this edit special. |

Many feel it's the best extended version that has been made so far. It's also in the best quality compared to other fanedits that used older sources.
It incorporates as much as possible from the "official" TV extended edition but without the sloppy editing that was present there (e.g. repeating random establishing shots, over and over). It also has completed "blue eyes" VFX, because the "official" TV extended edition couldn't be arsed to pay for them. It also incorporates the deleted scenes, which on disc were in bad to terrible video and audio quality and missing the blue eyes VFX. Not that their quality is good in the fanedit, but spicediver did what he could with them. And he again completed the missing VFX for them. But that is not to say that the fanedit looks to restore Lynch's vision per se. Sure, by definition of incorporating all the extra material that Lynch was forced to cut, it happens to be closer to Lynch's vision, yes. But it also removes a lot of the internal monologue lines and it changes the ending because fans of the book had a problem with Lynch's ending. I'm sure if Lynch ever made his own official version, he wouldn't make those two changes. So it's more of "do what is best with all the available material" and less of "do what Lynch would do". Though there's certainly overlap and it's not like Lynch is coming back from the grave to make his own cut, so it's the best we have. |

Im not a fan of the spicediver, it changes too much from Lynch's version. Its for people that dislike Lynchs Dune, which was the majority opinion for a long time. As someone who likes that Dune, spicediver presumes to do too much. It is competent tho, unlike most other fanedits

Agreed. Competence is a big assest honestly. I downloaded a different fanedit after spicediver that sounded great (i don't remember the name) only to be sorely dissappointed in The encoding... the frames stuttered so badly i couldnt stand finishing it, audio was an awful mix too.

The theatrical version is 137 mins long, the TV version 177 mins long. It incorporates a lot of previously deleted footage, but it's also censored, shoddily edited, and has unfinished VFX (the Fremen don't have blue eyes in the reinserted scenes). Lynch took his name off it and is instead credited as Judas Booth.

I just got my shipping notification a few hours ago from Imprint / Via Vision. I'm interested to see how this turned out. I didn't realize until I looked at the specs again tonight just how HUGE this box set is. LOL

I found this unboxing video on YouTube. The set looks amazing, and we get that gorgeous Koch cover art on the back of the box.
