Default DTS HD/MA decoder flaw

This is NOT good for so many reasons, and just might delay internal decoding for the PS3 due to alot of unanswered questions with this codec, just for the obvious. Reminds me of the chip issue for the original dts codec, and the mess that created. Just when things were looking up for DTS/HD MA and the PS3, this has to happen.

It will not affect the ps3 because it will not send it bitstream.

I have a Onkyo and the panny 30k. I am testing FF right now to see if i have this problem. I will let you know if it comes up.

I was not implying that it affected the PS3 in any way, but is relevant in the big picture, because of the products it does affect.

I would imagine Sony cound patch this problem in the firmware if they felt it was an issue, or maybe because they felt it was, that is why it has been taking so long to get it.

They need to update the first post at AVS. Pioneer's models are NOT affected. The one report was on an unrelated disc with an unrelated problem. The IC at fault here has only been used in Onkyo/Integra and Yamaha receivers.

For those who don't feel like reading everything about the problem, here's a brief summary:

An errata exists within the IC used in the following receivers:
Onkyo 605, 705, 805, PR885
Integra 8.8, 9.8
Yamaha RX-V3800, RX-V1800

that can cause a "shotgun"-like pop from the speakers when certain DTS-HD MA data is fed to the decoder. DTS has updated their encoding software to work-around this issue, but unless existing discs are replaced or firmware updates made available to address the problem, existing discs will continue to have this problem. The discs reported to cause this problem are:

1408 (import)
Golden Compass
The Fly
Chronos
Fantastic Four (some reports -- others say no problem)
Hannibal Rising (HD DVD)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (not verified -- only one report)
Eagles Fairwell Concert (HD DVD)
Flight of the Phoenix

No other DTS-HD MA discs are effected, and no other receivers are effected (Denon, Sony, Pioneer, etc). Also, in-player decoding on the Denon BD player also does not exhibit this problem. Yamaha Germany has released a firmware update that MAY have corrected this problem on Yamaha receivers, though Yamaha USA has not. Onkyo has received numerous complaints of the issue and is reportedly now looking into it.

The studios Fox and RBFilms have been made aware of the issue, but as its a hardware issue and not a problem with their software, there's probably not going to be a solution from their end.

I ordered one of these a few weeks back and am still waiting for it. I hope they have this sorted out before I get it.

This is very troublesome. I recently purchased the Yamaha 1800 along with the Pioneer 95 blu ray. I also had six JBL speakers mounted on my wall. I am glad I saw this thread because I was watching Flight of the Phoenix a couple of weeks ago and heard a very serious pop. I had no idea what it was. My question is this. How can I tell if this caused damage to any of my speakers?

First, I added that title to the list above. It had been mentioned at AVS also, but I forgot to add it to the list. Sorry.

As for damage, there are no reports of damage yet. There is well-founded concern that (especially if you are listening at a high volume) you COULD cause damage to your speakers... or possibly even your amplifier.

I'll be the first to admit that speakers aren't my specialty, so hopeully someone more knowledgeable can give us all some tips on how to tell whether less obvious damage has been done to speakers. Personally, unless a speaker actually blew, I woudn't be too concerned. I still wouldn't listen to the DTS-HD MA tracks on those discs for the time being just to be safe.

I heard in the avs thread that there is already a fix for Germany on the Yamaha 1800.

That would suck that if the new PS3's at that time don't internally decode DTS-MA and can bitstream in out. Then I would be stuck.
That makes two of us as I have the 60 gig as well.

Well got the popping sound and it is the same place every time on Phoenix. 51:36. So now i have heard it and it is same place everytime seems to me it may be the disc causing something to make this pop. Why would it be in the same place every time if it wasn't? Seems like it may be like a layer change type situation.

Just thinking here.

i think its a combo of both. if you read the avs forum thread, a guy took his equipment and played a movie in the same spot with the pop. then changed the receiver and no pop. same movie same cables same speakers.
