it's not an action movie, it's a very expensive kid movie with a lot of unique visuals. it's a weird movie. expecting it to do well was silly, as was investing so much in it.

not that I'm complaining, at least I get to see it and enjoy it.

Corrected - final figures are $18.6 million for Speed Racer and $20.7 million for What Happens in Vegas. Number three!

I don't see why the movie is getting trashed, my son forced me to see it, so I went in with absolutely no expectations. It's a fun ride, the script is what I pretty much expected from an anime, nothing too heavy, it stayed within the "acceptable" speed racer genre, and didn't try to be something it wasn't. The actors acted pretty much as I remember the old speed racer cartoons.

It was very visual, and animeish. I think they tried to keep it an anime while being live action instead of trying to make it "realistic". I thought that the best part of it was the visual aspect. Too many live action version of movies don't seem to have the same soul for lack of better word as the original anime/cartoon/comics they come from. I felt this was truly an anime that happened to be live action.

I think they didn't market it well enough to garner enough kids and parents attention, plus the rating probably threw it off. If Disney had marketed it, it would have probably flattened Iron Man.

The only downside to it as a kid's movie though is it's length. It's hard to keep a childs attention for 2 hours, the last 30 minutes my son was fidgeting ready to go.

Am sorry, maybe I got the wrong impression from the trailers, but not goint to blow $20 to go see Spy Kids 3D Racers with my wife.

It'll be a BR rental in my book, if that.

Speed Racer is not Spy Kids.
At all.

That would be like saying Predator is Gumby.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great popcorn flick; go in with little expectations and enjoy the ride.

It's a shame it did so poorly.

I absolutely loved it. I was constantly entertained. Even though aimed at children it was still narratively progressive and visionary, like the brothers' other films.

I've been waiting for this movie for years and was not disappointed. I'm going again this weekend. It's a shame that this isn't doing well. The Blu will rock!!

Saw "Speed Racer" this week & I thought it was done very well. I left the theater entertained & amazed. I'm not sure what some movie-goers were looking for when they went to see it? It is based on 1960's anime! Maybe I'm dating myself, but I grew up on after school tv programming when I was a kid. That meant Gumby, Batman & Robin, 3 Stooges & Speed Racer among others.
Every kid I knew who had a collection of Matchbox cars would try the famous jump & go YAH, YAH , YAH . It's just what you did when you were a kid!
Lastly, I like the fact that the producers REALLY restrained in whoring themselves out to sponsors/advertisers. I only remember 3?

1.SCALEXTRIC (slotcars). This was so fast, I almost thought I did not see it. All I remember was the blue oval.
2.YOKOHAMA (tires). Pretty apparent behind Mom's head in the garage, but cropped so the entire spelling was not visible.
3.AUTOBACS (auto accessories). Small sponsorship banners in one of the race scenes.

This movie was NOT "Transformers" in the "how much can you ***** yourself out" dept.

I'll be on line waiting for the Blu..
