Its worth it to get an idea of how this will look when a proper release comes down the road but that idea will cost ya $20

I watched it the first day I got it & despite the 1.78:1 ratio & 1080i encode the PQ is an improvement over the DVD technically. There are many graphic scenes in this film & some are too soft or have too much compression issues which take away detail in SD. These scenes are the ones which benefit most on this Blu-ray release. "Sloth" is a perfect example. The BD does suffer from contrast wavering problems & does not have as sharp a look to it mainly because of the Super 35 & Fincher style grain intentions.

The audio comes with 8bit err 16bit (Its hard to tell as every AA title I've now seen does not boost better AQ from its so called lossless option) dts-HDMA & 448kbps Dolby track. Honestly, this is even disappointing. The SD track from the platinum almost sounds better. Dynamic range is weak, Sub db levels are low & minor distortion coupled with the fact that the master has been mixed 12-15db below reference level.

The only thing which saves this BD is the fact its Se7en, nothing more.

Is it likely that the US version will receive a different transfer than the apparently shoddy Canadian one?

Absolutely. Especially when it comes to the aspect ratio.

No, actually you get more picture, not less. As someone else has already pointed out, the movie was shot in a 1.78 ratio and then matted off to 2.35 (not 2.40) for theatrical presentation. Of course, that's the way Fincher intended it to be seen, but it's not true to say you would be losing any of the picture.

I refuse to purchase Se7en on Blu ray in Canada as the aspect ratio is totally messed up....the film was originally filmed in 2:40-1 and was released as a 1:78-1 ratio.....I was reallly pi$$ed about this....Alliance has done it with several titles that are not in their proper ratio....pretty bad...that's why they're so cheap at Best Buy and Future Shop.....I will wait until they're properly released....perhaps a Criterion release?? Now that would be sweet!

There's sure a lot of disinformation here.
