Good news...

1. Casablanca has just been announced for Germany for November 7th... and there will be both the Ultimate Collector's Edition as well as a "regular" BD release, the latter one without the memorabilia and without the Jack Warner documentary. I think it's a given that the US will get the "regular" release as well.

http://www.cinefacts.de/news/news.php?newsid=13358

2. The Amazon pre-order price for the UCE is down to a very reasonable (IMO) $ 41,95...

My Ultimate Edition was missing the passport whatever and the wallet type item. The container that was supposed to contain it was inside the box set but was empty.

Anyone else missing items from theirs?

**NOTE to previous last post.**

The movie disc is a BD-25 but for a full frame presentation the film doesn't require as much space as a film that is anamorphic.

I would like to think WB could have given the film more space. DVDBeaver notes the film takes up 15.49 GB of space.

"Casablanca" is a good film, but way overrated. I just do not think it is a great film, and by know means in the class of lets say "Gone with the Wind"

It is a good release.. even if I had missing bonus' in the box set.. very odd.. at least I had the disc in there. The case was mint... and not bashed up some on the shelves were really banged up bad.

For those who don't want to spend money on the set I bet you anything WB is planning a Digibook release for the film DVD only I would imagine.

I picked it up today (double-dip, already have the 2003 DVD) and just watched it and some of the special features.

Considering the clarity, the extras and the collectibles... I don't think this was too highly priced.

To fans of the film... highly recommended!

OMFG you are joking right? I hope you do not write reviews on this site. Gone with the wind was the first color "epic" but had nowhere near the intelligence or complexity of Casablanca! If anything, something like The Dark Knight is way overrated! yeah good film, but not in the class of the Original Star Wars......

lets see you debate that one.......

Is there a difference in video- and/or audio-quality between the Collectors Edition and the Ordinary release?

that is all I can say. I believe Casablanca to be the greatest movie ever made. All the parts of the movie the actors and parts, the direction, the sets, the music, the story, the timing of its release, they all blend together here unlike any movie before or since.

I am a Casablanca lover myself but what I hate is when people try to convert other into loving what they love. As with any other art form film is also multi-layered in terms of characterization, story, plot and so on... It is likely that what strikes me about Casablanca does not strike Joe somebody but that doesn't mean I'll try to impose my sensibilities on him / her. though I'll try to give my point of view but I'll definitely not make it a war. Just my two cents.

That's a slipcover right? There might be something else on the actual case?

Just curious why this move was blocked off on both sides. My TV was set to 16:9 and it did not fill on the sides. Like most other movies I have veiwed. If I set it to wide than of course if filled the entire screen. Am I missing something or was this film released in the theatre at certain aspect ratio.

Casablanca, like every other film made before 1953, was made in what we now call "full screen". That's the way all movies looked, and the way theaters showed them. There were a few attempts at wide-screen formats (VERY few, maybe 4 or total) before that, but they didn't catch on. That's why traditional TV screens were shaped that way.

The Wide-screen movies arrived with 1953's The Robe. The format was an attempt to lure people away from those new-fangled TV sets they were buying. The same was true of stereo sound, and 3D.

In short -- you're seeing it in 4:3 because that's how it was shot, just like Gone With The Wind, The Wizard Of Oz and every other film from then that you can think of. The only way to make it wide-screen would be to cut off the top and/or bottom of the picture.
