Your talent with wood is Amazing.The Cabinet looks simply stunning in this phase of construction.I could only imagine how Beautiful the Finished Product Will Appear.

Forsberg,my Friend.You are missing out with not being able to see this.

Not everyone has a knack to really do wonderful work with wood.But I see you dont have any restrictions to your ability.Very Impressive work.

I like the cabinet..... great work.... I think the built-ins for the media is fantastic too..... I would like to do that for my room, but not sure I want the "construction dust" to occur again, when I don't really "Need" a space savings solution.....

There is a wall that would be PERFECT for creating a built-in for my movies, but the work may not be worth it in the end

Thanks for the glowing review talstarone! though I still consider myself an amateur. I've got way too many projects to do before I can start tinkering in the garage with woodworking, but I hope to get a router table in the coming years, then I'll start doing some real fun stuff. Of course, that is after the toybox, 12x20 shed, deck and fence

Today, I'll stop bye the store and get more sandpaper, it needs a good once over now that all the sharp edges are sanded down.

One thing I'd like feedback for, I'm going to stain it golden oak (WAF - don't ask) but I'm resistant to putting polyurethane on it due to glare concerns. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks Betaman! The built ins were kind of an afterthought after I started framing, I wanted to hide some duct work, so the 'U' shaped closet turned into an open shelving unit for movies. I still have another smaller one I need to cut shelving for and install. That shouldn't take too long.

If you decide to do it, you can always hang plastic up and tape it up and down to keep the dust out, but it can get dusty. Especially when you sheet rock - though you can keep that down by just using a blade instead of a rotozip. I made most all my wood cuts out in the garage and drug them downstairs.

You don't have to go high gloss on the poly. They have low sheen poly (satin). I would say that you def. want the poly protection, just look at the sheen options available at your local home improvement store.

Looking good. Can't wait to see it with actual gear in it. Are you going to add any ventilation or fans?

No problem about the poly tip. I used satin on our kitchen table when I refinished it. I think I did 5 coats of poly so it would be protected from the abuse of kitchen life.

That is Turning into an Amazing Looking Cabinet .

The color looks beautiful.And the grain of the wood in the back gives it a Custom/One of a Kind Look.
Congratulations on Putting together such a tremendous Cabinet.

I cant wait to see it in its final resting place.It should look simply Amazing.

Thanks guys, it's been fun working out there. I'd much rather do this than all the yard work I did this summer. Today it's back to the store for the poly, tonight another coat of stain, wed will be poly, then install the hardware, so we hope to get it downstairs this weekend.

What I'm going to do is once I get my channels setup, I'll drill out 4 holes and cut from the back with a jig saw a rectangle for the cords / ventilation. The good news is, this will all be in my year round cool basement, and there should be an extra 5 inches of side clearance for 17" components and plenty of top clearance.

I haven't really thought of fans yet though.

Thanks Dead, I apprecaite it! It looks very nice. Your craftsmanship shines through on that media stand. Does the back come off easily to change cables? What are your plans for cable management with it anyway Dead?

Have you given any thought to isolating the equipment from each other in the stand?

If you look down there by my right foot, you'll see the shelving pieces that are still unfinished / unsanded. There are 2 for the left, 2 for the right, and 1 for the center - for a total of 8 spaces.

As for cable management.....um....I should plan on something other than just plugging everything in and jamming the cabinet against the wall right?

If you put this much time into it, maybe you should. Perhaps you could have the back panel slide up out of some slots. This way you could slide it back in when finished with the cables.......

I'll try to think of something, once I get how everything is going to connect, I'll make all the necessary holes for cords, then I'll see about bunching them together etc.

There will be casters on this so I can roll it out too.

Looking real nice, and we all finally get a look at the real Deads3t! Are those your old Engineering books stacked on the box?

Did you happen to use plywood with a different rating on each side? I ask because it looks that way on the interior shots. Not a big deal as you'll never notice once the gear is in. As mentioned earlier, use a satin-finish poly and sand with 0-000 steel wool in between coats (be sure to stock-up on tack cloths, too). If you have a router, think about using that to cut out the plywood backing. Sabre saws have a tendancy to tear-up thin plywood like that.

Yep, I did buy it with veneer on one side, the other side is more red oak material or something different. Not really sure, but I tried to make it symmetrical, so both ends have that side facing 'in' and the middle has the veneer facing 'in' and also on the outside the vener is facing out. But like you said, they'll be full of components so it shouldn't really matter.

I've got a rotozip that should do the trick, esp for only 1/4" backing. I don't have a router unfortunately - I have used them in the past but most have been borrowed.

I'm hitting the store today to get the poly, tack cloths and steel wool. Last night I put another coat of stain on the cabinet. 2 coats and it's looking good.

The cabinet looks fantastic! I'm like you 500 engineering books just so that we can cut wood and use power tools.

IMO, if your cabinet will not have doors in front and as long as you have holes on the backing or room behind the shelves, cable management and ventilation should not be an issue. On the other hand, I have a cabinet with doors in front and it has a backing to it with holes for the cables. The heat my AVR and PS3 were generating became a concern, so I opted to remove the backing altogether. This solved my ventilation problem. Good luck and keep the pictures coming!

Thanks vega! I took up woodworking a few years ago, just small stuff, then I started on my basement, now I'm going to build a shop just for making stuff out back. Fun stuff!

As for heat, there won't be any front doors, yes a nightmare for dust getting in there, but I like it open, so the back will have rectangular holes for cords.

I see you're following the UP/Monsters mania. I locked in my preorder at amazon!

Sweet, can't really be too upset about 34 bucks for 2 disney movies.

If you want to get started in woodworking, just find a project that you want to build and gradually start collecting tools here and there. My first was a spice rack, second was a shelf, third was a MAME cabinet...then I started on the basement and now it's the cabinet...etc...

Once you find out the project, you can tool-up for it. It's fun, as someone once told me, the way you know who is a skilled woodworker is the one who can hide their mistakes. Point is, everyone will make mistakes but you can fix lots of them. It can be tough, but there are all sorts of little tricks you can do to hide minor errors.

After this, it's a toy box then a portable work bench, thanks to Ricshoe for the plans!

Since we bought our new house...... I've found that gathering tools is easy (and expensive) to do!
