Your opinion. I've never heard somebody say that about Criterion's covers. I actually think the ones you've selected to scrutinize are actually really good, especially the Chaplin cover. You're obviously overlooking the creativity here.

A terrible cover for a brilliant movie... it looks like someone made this in 5 minutes.

Too bad they didn't go with the artwork used for the DVD release.

And I entirely disagree with the idea that Criterion make bad covers... they make great covers. It's nice to see a variation on a theme done creatively.

Seems to me Bluray's in general have had a lot of lackluster cover art. Studio's should setup contests for fans on the internet to create artwork. Atleast then we would get some awesome cover's.

While SOME fans have created great covers, the majority of self-appointed "designers" create covers that look like ransom notes. Furthermore, it's not as simple as you think because there are all kinds of contractual requirements and limitations as to how credits are presented, whose photograph is used, the presentation of company logos, how production credits are listed, etc.

There's also what I call the "Hobbit clause", which is that if one star is shown, then all the stars have to be shown.

zoetmb - i guess that hobbit clause is the reason why we have too often the same boring *all their face in a circle* cover art.completly devoid of arts. soo generic.i`d rather see just the name of the movie in beautifull fonts on a black cover instead of that industrial nonsense.or at least they could go old school and artsy and paint the godamn poster. i mean one of my favorite is the blade runner original arts. its shows some faces, beautifully drawn.it feels special.they put work into it.

i know, you dont just judge a book by its cover. but if all the movies looks generic as hell with the same paterns of face around a mountain and crap, they better dont cry on my shoulders that their stuff dont sell.

Why would anyone not buy a movie they like because the cover art is bad???? Sorry this is confusing to me, do they buy the Blu-ray for the art so it's going to look good on the shelves or for the movie? I am more worried about the image and sound of the movie then the cover art but to each is own I suppose.

Terrible! Just terrible.

How 'bout they remove Josh Brolin's name from the front and add the girls? after all, she was nominated for her performance...

And for the love, why did they use portraits like those?

p@t mtl im sorry i`ll try to explain my point better. of course if you like the movie and the cover is bad it doesnt matter and i would still buy it. but to give an exemple, your going to futur shop and there is like 200 blurays out there. and you want to buy a movie you dont know, just to be surprised, and nothing stand out. now, probably you, me, and the whole bluray.com are well informed before buying a product, but the majority of people would buy one, just to buy one anyway they will probably take the one they see more attractive. then again its only my opinion and i might be wrong

that being said i`ll speak about my own interrest now. i`ll take for exemple lord of the rings movies. when i first bough them, it was the theatrical versions.i`ll be honest and say i though the covers were good.but turned out to be generic as hell.
they are along with my favorite movies, i wouldnt want to live without them.i LOVE them. so i got a bit fancy with them. when the extended edition dvds were released, i bough the whole boxset. this is my favorite boxset of my whole collection. each movie looks like a book,no movie pictures, just arts. wow.i watched the first part of fellowship of the ring yesterday, i'll watch part 2 tonight. and i just want to share the special feeling you get with you open the box, and see this baby, before putting the disk in the player.

of course , it doesnt change the movie experience, but for me,it add something special.

im planning of buying the cinema type posters of excalibur and blade runner. i love theses pictures that much.as much as i love theses movies.

why should a company put efforts and money into a movie box cover?

and then, why not?

most BDs that don't use movie posters is bad. i don't get why they can't just use the movie poster. do they really have to renegotiate the artwork rights? that's pretty ridunkulous.
