CR introduced the Tuxedo, and the slight sharpening of the blunt instrument through Vespa's emotional interaction. QoS defined M's ability to influence Bond at the height of his rage, and Bond's attempts to harness the ability to distance himself personally from the violence and death without losing the ability to emote and empathize on a human level.

I thought QoS was a fine Bond film, although, to a lot of people's point, it seemed a bit more like CR 1.5 than a standalone entry. I'll have it on Blu day one.
I agree with much of that, especially your point about the relationship between Bond and M being developed. So too was the relationship between Bond and Felix. In the future, this may allow him to "go rogue" without London and Langley freaking out the way they did in QoS, with two different scenes dedicated to US and British agents trying to stop him. There really was an amazing amount of "stuff" going on in QoS for how short it was and I need to see it a couple more times to really know that I got everything out of it (I only saw it once in the theater).

Impossible.

I think it was 6 years into DVD's life before that happened.

I'd rather watch paint dry, then watch Ghost Rider or Doomsday...

This movie again may not appeal to older hardcore Bond fans, but then again, it can't be considered garbage in any way. It has a pretty good story with amazing action, choreographed insanely well.

Yeah... no.

It was not edited any where nearly as fast as the Bourne movies, and if you couldn't keep up, then that's your fault. This movie was extremely well done, and I will continue defending it, as long as there are people bashing it for no reason. So continue, bash...

Wow, I can't believe I actually agree with Liquid Prince on something, but I saw this movie over the weekend and really enjoyed it. Not as good a movie overall as Casino Royale, but I didn't feel like there was "too much" action like some people have been saying. Yeah, the fight scenes were frenetic with lots of fast cuts, but it was kind of fun to watch. When you watch a real fight with fists and elbows flying, it's pretty hard to see what exactly is going on anyway unless you watch a replay. I thought the story developed well and set up an interesting third part.

Definitely better than Casino, and March is gearing up to be Bond-on-Blu month for me. I'll be picking up.

1.) Quantum of Solace
2.) License to Kill
3.) Goldfinger
4.) Golden Eye

Actually there are plenty of cuts in QoS that are just as fast.

I've seen it twice, both times I made a point of counting some of the edits in the action sequences and there are numerous cuts that don't even last 0.5 secs.

(and the second time I saw it I was dead sober)

The movie isn't terrible, it's about a 7/10 for me, but it's no Bond flick that's for sure. I'll still buy it when it's released on Blu-ray.

Shaky cam is for first person only - using it in any other shot is silly - it totally takes away from the overall experience. It has nothing to do with being able to "keep up" with the story.

I give it a 5/10. Really dissapointing movie. The shaky camera seems like it was thrown in there because Forster has no idea how to make cool looking actions shots. The story was just not interesting at all. Everything about the first one was better. It looked nicer, was more interesting, felt more like a Bond movie and not Bourne, pacing was better, seemed to flow really nicely. The director in this movie somehow screwed everything up he possible could.

Scathing review of this bollocks of a film:

[Show spoiler]The story was very weak from the start and focused heavily on the action sequences. From a car chase, to a foot chase, to a boat chase to finally top it with a plane chase (this part was definitely not needed), thus covering every single possible chase that you can have in a movie!

It seemed to me that it's very close to "Die Another Day", but luckily with a better script. But this whole idea of: "Bad guy wants to do something sinister [Korean guy from DAD vs Weird guy from QOS], Bond hooks up with the hot chick, who also happens to be in a sort of secret service [Halle Berry of DAD vs STRAWBERRY Fields of QOS], and go after him, and manage to blow everything up and save the day."[Plane of DAD vs Hotel of QOS]

Nothing was explained on the back story of Green (the other was White... Reservoir Dogs anyone?) and of course, nothing on the organization other than the name, which helped justify the title of the movie (QUANTUM? Are you ****ing kidding me?), but nothing more. Nothing explained on Vesper's boyfriend, why is he bad, why was the woman with him from Canadian intelligence, or his role in the entire movie.

They spent more time shooting people, blowing things up, and talking about what happened in the previous movie with Vesper, that they filled almost 2 hours with nothing important. Remove the entire action sequences, and you have a 30 minute movie.

What happened to the class that was in the previous film? What happened to the smart movie that makes you think? Are we back to Bond blowing **** up here and there, and walking out without a scratch?

I don't know. I don't understand why this happened. I thought Bond got a reboot and that we'll never see of the mindless action of the Superman that we got used to in earlier Bond movies. A parachute opening 3 feet before reaching the ground? holding two people? Really? Did anyone think we'll believe that? And of course, they decided to kill off Rene Mathis, which pissed me off more than anything I just mentioned! ARGH!

Sigh.... What a DISAPPOINTING movie... So sad that this letdown is the sequel to the amazing movie that was Casino Royale. Seriously, they should've called this movie Quantum of Soulless instead!

Obviously it is your right to feel how you do about the movie, but some of the questions you raise strike me as odd. First "QUANTUM" is not the only link to the title, "Quantum of Solace."
[Show spoiler]Bond is outraged at the world, and needs to find something that is real, something that reassures him that everything he previously thought was not a lie - he needs a quantum (the tiniest bit) of solace. And at the end of the movie, he finds that - he saves someone from the despair that happened to him, and in doing so is able to feel good about his work and the world again. That is why he does not kill the man, when before he would have without thought because revenge was the only thing he knew how to do in that state of mind.

As for who the boyfriend is,
[Show spoiler]what do you feel is missing? He's clearly an agent of QUANTUM, and he goes around seducing women who have high positions in intelligence agencies, then pretends to get kidnapped so QUANTUM can squeeze her for information or whatever they want. The Canadian woman isn't anything important to the story - it's just evidence of him doing the same thing to her that he previously did to Vesper. Bond is able to stop him this time before the Canadian woman gets hurt. That is his quantum of solace.

No, Bond was not classy in this film - but it was for character development reasons. He doesn't act classy because he's raging against a world flipped upside down on him. The movie is absolutely brutal, but it's telling an important part of Bond's evolution from beginner to the hardened and classy agent you see in other films.

It would have been interesting had this film been edited by Stuart Baird as Casino Royale had been.

I'll be blind buying this. Don't expect it to be amazing due to the reviews. But non the less it still sounds like a fun James Bond action flick.

Thanks, neo_reloaded. I only saw the movie once just a few days. Now that you explained it perhaps I was too harsh on QoS. I guess after seeing Casino Royale, I was spoiled by it so for the sequel, I was expecting something more, something better. You would at least imagine the same flow of story, the same character-focus, the same intelligence. To be honest, as a movie itself, it didn't suck, but it definitely didn't live up to CR, a film that can still stand on its own.

This movie just went back to the typical tradition of Bond driving fast nice cars, killing bad guys, drinking, gambling, and
[Show spoiler]almost
having sex with hot Eastern European women so if you're a fan of that, you won't be disappointed.

Also, I loved the opening sequence, "Another Way To Die" is an okay song, and Daniel Craig's gunbarrel was cool.

If Casino Royale is on the same line of quality as Goldeneye, then Quantum of Solace is definitely Craig's Tomorrow Never Dies. A fast-paced non-stop action movie with limited acting and a weak plot. Not the best, not the worst, its just...there.
