Why does that article state they're kicking around ideas then goes on to say:

"Both Universal, which released the trilogy, and Spielberg's camp stress that no one has been engaged to write a script and that the discussions have been purely exploratory. But the idea is kind of a no-brainer."

They've run the raptors into the ground. They need new dinosaurs to take center stage. But replacing the T-Rex with the Spinosaurus was a big mistake.

I'm hopeful they can send the franchise out on a high note and not on the low note that was JP III

I've been a dino-buff my entire life (and I still read paleontology publications regularly in my late 40's), and I have grown SO bored of velociraptors. And, you're absolutely right, JP4 will need some new and interesting dinos to even make people excited again.

My suggestions?

Allosaurus and Styracosaurus, for starters. Perhaps a Protoceratops herd (and more egg/socialization/parenting research for Alan Grant).

Along with a new cast of dinosaurs they need a new plot. JP3's plot was so simple it was beyond absurd. Child gets lost on abandoned dinosaur island , go rescue him. Really there was no plot.

The original Jurassic Park had a purpose. A billionaire was making a dinosaur theme park and after an accident he needed experts to sign off on the park. Then greed from a rival corporation turned everything upside down.

Basically unloading some humans on one of the islands and watching them survive among the dinosaurs just simply isn't good enough. Never was good enough.

The story needs to evolve throughout the film. With Jurassic Park 3 and in alot of ways 2 the story was already finished at the beginning of the film. It was not allowed to play out.

I won't mind kid characters in the movie, but I will mind annoying kid, or even annoying adult characters that plague so many movies these days. The two annoying parents in JP3. JP1 and JP2 did not have annoying characters.

I think if they're going to make JP4 they got to take the dinosaurs to the mainland. The whole movie should be based in the "human" world. While the islands produced a nice campy atmosphere they have been pretty much played out.

Simple. The premise of the books and the first two movies is that no matter what, life will find a way. You have baby dinos showing up first in South America, then in Mexico and then in the United States. Attacks start off slowly and everyone is puzzled as to what's causing the attacks. Then maybe you have Mexican drug gangs using small dinos in attacks on rivals and word starts to get out, but people don't believe it, they believe it's gang propaganda. Then you have some attacks in Texas and Arizona and they start to realize there's a problem. Grant and perhaps some of the original scientists hear what's going on and they realize it must be dinos. They have to get together (possibly with the Government) to wipe them out.

-or-

You start the original premise all over again, but without the amusement park. Some scientist realizes that some Dinosaur antibody can cure cancer or whatever. He somehow finds Hammond's original research. He starts cloning dinosaurs. As before, chaos theory ensues. The dinos escape or they start to reproduce outside the facility. Grant and perhaps some of the others are brought in to stop them.

-or-

Some young brilliant (but as always, stupid) renegades hear the rumors about the former Jurassic Park. They sneak into the original grounds which is mostly bombed out, but somehow they get some dino DNA. They bring it back to the U.S., find the Hammond files and start cloning.

-or-
The Chinese hear the rumors about the former Jurassic Park and build their own. It works great...for a while. Until they discover all these eggs in the new transit systems the Chinese are building.

I'd actually prefer an R-rated reboot where the original material by Chrichton is followed much more closely. They could easily rejuvenate a massively known (but currently pretty limp) household name [the Jurassic Park "brand"] into another billion-dollar-plus grossing series of pictures.

Nah, I think they should stick with PG-13. If they're gonna make an R-rated dinosaur movie, they should adapt Dino Crisis instead.

Joe Johnston Talks a Little About ‘Jurassic Park 4'

It’s been a decade since we last had the opportunity to see a group of hapless scientists and morally bereft venture capitalists go mano-a-dino in a Jurassic Park film. In that time there has been a steady stream of rumors and speculation amongst the public about the storyline for a fourth film, and a (seeming) series of fits-and-starts in the production.

Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston has been the name most consistently attached to the project (other than film franchise creator Steven Spielberg and writer Mark Protosevich).

Johnston directed the third instillation in the franchise, a film that received a mixed critical and fan response. He had previously indicated a desire to keep the fourth film off the island saying, “Why would anybody go back to that island? It was hard enough to figure out the second and third reason for them to go, but it would take it off in a whole other trilogy basically, but when it gets to that level it’s sort of about studios and Steven’s thing and who knows.”

Very little has been revealed as to an actual story for Jurassic Park 4, though Protosevich (who worked on the story for Thor) and Steven Spielberg are reportedly currently in the process of crafting a framework for the film now. When we sat down with Johnston this weekend to speak about Captain America we asked if there were any updates from the world of Jurassic Park.

The director said simply:
Quote:
“We are in discussions about ‘Jurassic Park 4.’ The most important thing I can tell you is that it starts a new trilogy that will go off in a different direction — a completely different direction that is very exciting, and different from anything we’ve seen.” Johnston continued by saying that, “It starts with the history of the first trilogy, but it spins it off in a completely different direction. That’s all I can tell you.”
One can only speculate on what that direction might be. With an earlier indication that it would be challenging to get an audience to accept another trip to an Island, could it be that the dinosaurs are now going to be placed within a general population, or that perhaps so much time has passed that it is now standard practice to have a dinosaur zoo within a cityscape? Will it be Planet of the Apatosaurus? It’s really anyone’s guess.

With the success of Thor and the anticipated success of the Johnston helmed Captain America is it possible that we may see Jurassic Park 4 emerge from development purgatory and make it’s way to the production pipeline fast track?
Not much in new information...But it's clear it's going in a new direction.

ANY direction would be preferable! Don't get me wrong, talk of JP4 is exciting to me...but I can't help thinking:

Well, with Captain America coming out Friday, I'm not surprised. It's nice to finally see him getting a shot at doing more things that he wants to do, less than being a director for hire when they need something done quickly.

You're definitely not because I do too. I thought Johnston made a great movie.

I bet if the blu-ray set of the first three sells really well, we'll get a greenlight of four not long after.

That is great they are thinking of taking it in a new direction. There are only so many times you can trick Dr. Grant and Dr. Malcolm into going back to the island of dinosaurs where they both have come close to death.

I think there are a lot of cool directions they could take the story.

Universal wants to make sure there is still a fanbase and enough to invest a sequel in. That's why I bet we'll hear something after the trilogy is released.
