Just got the new release of 2.
No changes. Same art, same everything, just a 2017 date on the back. I also noticed it was rated PG-13 "for ribald humor". Apparently, someone from the 1920s was rating films when WW2 passed through the office. |

In 1992, I was a young teenager and Saturday Night Live’s WAYNE’S WORLD skits were hugely popular. All of my friends would quote the catchphrases and imitate Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey). I hadn’t seen the movie for at least a decade so I threw it on last night. While some of the jokes are unquestionably dated and it feels of its time, I still laughed where I was supposed to most of the time. Admittedly, this could be purely because of nostalgia and I’m not sure how well it would play with someone who wasn’t aware of the context. In any case, director Penelope Spheeris crafted the movie well, as it looks good, and was successful at steering a skit into a feature length film, as it never feels stretched thin.
Burnout metalheads Wayne and Garth’s public access variety show is humming along when the status quo is broken up by an opportunistic TV executive named Benjamin (smooth talking and conceited Rob Lowe) who wants to give the show a much larger platform. Of course, Benjamin doesn’t care about maintaining the show’s creative integrity, he just wants to make money. He ropes in local Chicago-area billionaire Noah Vanderhoff (clueless square Brian Doyle Murray) to finance the show, which creates some friction, as Wayne and Garth are mostly unwilling to compromise. At the same time, talented rock singer Cassandra (Tia Carrere in a star making turn) captures Wayne’s heart while Benjamin tries to exploit her, as well. The titular duo will have to try to wrest control of the show back from Benjamin and still maintain their friendship as it’s tested by money and personal upheaval. Of course, Myers and Carvey are great as the leads. Myers, who also wrote the film along with Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner, carries the picture as the more socially adjusted and confident Wayne. Carvey’s meeker, nerdier Garth provides some warmth, though, and provides some physical comedy. Lowe, however, is the film’s secret weapon. Weaselly, but slick, he’s the perfect foil to our slacker heroes. It’s not just his character though, it’s his tighter performance that contrasts perfectly with the looser proceedings of the film in general. Carrere is totally convincing as a rock singer with some pipes and she actually performs in a handful of sequences. A few of the smaller roles are occupied by known faces, such as Lara Flynn Boyle as Wayne’s clingy ex-girlfriend, Kurt Fuller as Benjamin’s right hand man, and Ed O’Neill as a tense donut store manager. Watch out for cameos from Chris Farley, Meat Loaf, Alice Cooper, and Robert Patrick. Besides performances, what else works? The conceit of Wayne and Garth breaking the fourth wall and speaking to the audience is utilized effectively. The plot, though pretty basic, is well structured and production design is nice if unspectacular. The music is mostly fun, even if it tends toward songs that most people of my generation have heard thousands of times on the radio. It’s important to note that Bohemian Rhapsody and Ballroom Blitz exploded into newfound popularity after this film. This is particularly true for the former, as I don’t think it’s unfair to say that there’s a large amount of people who associate the song exclusively with this movie. While I hesitate to use the word “iconic,” the scene where it’s used borders on that description. Objectively, I have to say the film hasn’t aged all that well, though. Bits that rely on the pop culture of the time will probably come off as head scratchers to anyone who wasn’t around back then. Also, the Hair Metal aesthetic is liable to turn off anyone who doesn’t have at least a tiny modicum of appreciation for the popular music landscape of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Though Penelope Spheeris’ WAYNE’S WORLD is one of the better instances of SNL skits being translated to the silver screen, and I mostly enjoyed the film, I couldn’t help noticing how it’s starting to feel dated. As a purely nostalgic endeavor, I was pleased to revisit it and I’m looking forward to giving the sequel a spin soon. Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Rob Lowe, and Tia Carrere will probably keep your interest, even if you’re unfamiliar with the source material. The music and general pacing keep the proceedings rollicking and I would never describe the film as being bad. Like a pure snapshot of the early ‘90s, I enjoyed revisiting my youth. Recommended with caveats. |

Is the 2-disk set identical to the individual releases? On this site it says the dual-disk set are 2 BD-25 disks while the individual releases are BD-50 each. An error?
