Amanda Winn Lee has confirmed that the dub is entirely recast. The OG actors were given auditions out of courtesy but were never intended to be part of it.

Eh. Old dub should be preserved because it exists, but honestly, who cares? Just watch Eva in Japanese. The acting is way better than the old dub and will be leagues better than the new one. Just watch Eva in Japanese and never deal with the re-dub situation.

Isn't that a bit of a tease to let the old cast audition but not have any intention of casting again?

Some people aren't able to watch subtitles, whether due to a disability or otherwise, but even if you prefer dubs I'm almost certain the new dub will be a much needed improvement. I'll admit I almost never care about the quality of acting in a dub, but that's mainly because I don't watch them that much. What matters to me is whether this new dub is faithful to the script, and I'm sure they'll do a better job of that than the old one.

I'd rather just not watch Eva.

Now if they re-dub Haruhi Suzumiya, that I'll have a beef with.

Who cares? I do, because the dub is better.

Why are you so sure of that? And also which parts weren't faithful to the original? I've never heard anyone bring that up about eva before.

I'm sure of that because almost every dub in the past 10 years has been much more faithful than those from >20 years ago. As for which parts weren't faithful, there are a lot of "punched-up" lines and even added sound effects. This thread on Evageeks has a few examples.

Interesting. I wonder if the last Eva movie will be recast too in English? If it ever comes out when they last said it would, heh.

Either way, yeah. I wasn't a fan of the old dub. It was a thing of its and the US culture for that industry here. Always preferred the Japanese track. Very little dubbing from that era is impressive. And in general, it's almost always the Japanese track that rocks. Off the top of my head? Cowboy Bebop is the only one that may, if not already, tops the Japanese voices. They really got that one right.

That sounds like a waste of time. It’s one thing to have them audition for consideration and then end up saying no, but to just have them audition and not be serious about it just feels so very wrong. Auditions need to be taken seriously but this feels more like having them come in to audition just to laugh at them or something like some cruel April Fools joke.

Personally I want the old cast back or at least the Funimation cast which is mostly the same except for some characters.

I love Tiffany Grant so the new Asuka would be really weird. Spike was perfect for Shinji.

To me it seems strange to make a redub of everything if it isn't going to be released in the US again. I mean wouldn't the old dub save money and is iconic? Though I suppose Netflix has money to burn so why not.

Yeah, Grant also stated her thoughts and it’s sad to read.

Trust me, as a Japanese and English speaker, such a judgement is incorrect.

I'm not even a dub hater but that statement is just...lol. NGE has one of the bad English dubs and while the Rebuild ones are an improvement over that (particularly 3.33's dub), they still don't hold a candle to the emotion and nuances found in the Japanese audio.

This is one situation where I have no opinion on the dub being recast. I've never seen Eva, so this will all be brand new to me one way or another. I'm sure the new dub will be much better than the old one too, probably fairly dated at this point.
