Great research on Paranoid Gardren! This film is a very interesting look into Tsurisaki Kiyotaka earlier career before he began work on his documentary, Orozco the Embalmer.
I'd like to clear up a few points, most Japanese AV companies do not keep unfogged versions of there masters. Similar to the works of Tamakichi Anaru, the fogging is done during editing and is baked into the final video master. The cost alone for these independent companies to create two betacam masters for each film, would be prohibitive and pointless as the more niche films were made with the intent of exclusively for the Japanese market. Featured on the Paranoid Garden release, a brand new interview with the director where he discusses the AV business in those days and touches on the censorship that the AV filmmakers had to endure. I was told that Paranoid Garden will be hitting manufacturing this week! The wait will not be much longer, I'm glad there is such interest for this title here. |

![]() ![]() Samantha Rork, a Los Angeles cop played by Kary Jane, has a habit of turning every investigation into a blood-soaked body count, much to the chagrin of the police chief, who is always trying in vain to get her to follow the rule book. When her partner is gunned down, our tough blonde heroine intensifies her shoot-first-questions-later routine in order to take down the responsible drug cartel kingpin by way of car chases, bullets, and grenades. The low budget 1989 action film, American Rampage, directed by B movie extraordinaire David DeCoteau and apparently intended as Lethal Weapon knock-off with a female lead, is a blessing in present day for viewers who have felt something missing from their lives since acid-wash jeans and mullets waned in popularity. For others, it will come across as an incoherent jumble of random vignettes, in the form of violent gunfights or poolside scenes with topless actresses, occasionally interrupted by a paint-by-the-numbers narrative where Rork shoots people, talks to a police psychologist, played by Troy Donahue (The Godfather: Part II), shoots people, talks to a police psychologist, and shoots people. Be on the lookout for Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer, both of whom worked with DeCoteau in Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama and Nightmare Sisters. Bauer appears as a nameless sunbather by the villain's pool, while Quigley appears as a woman who takes a shower and is subsequently killed in a scene that has absolutely nothing to do with anything else in the story. American Rampage is strangely endearing despite its cinematic ineptitude, because late-night cable television cop movies like this are a callback to simpler times. The titular rampages are a lot of fun, mainly because certain actors playing the gunmen get overly-enthusiastic about their minor roles. The electronic synth music is perfect for the type of screen story at hand. This Massacre Video transfer, on a disc double-feature with Danger USA, looks pretty great, as good as one has a right to expect after sitting down to watch this. The commentary track is engaging, because the filmmakers openly ridicule their own work. P.S. There are occasional loud beeps during the commentary track. These are not coming from your smoke detector in your house, so do not bother to check. They are simply a part of the commentary track. Last edited by The Great Owl; 01-31-2021 at 09:27 PM. |

![]() ![]() Shana Beddow, an actress played by Martha Kincare, is known for starring in action movies where her characters use any weapons at their disposal to eliminate assailants. When Soviet spies kidnap her scientist father and victimize her family, however, our tough-as-nails heroine proves that she can leave a trail of bloodied corpses in the real world as well. The low budget 1989 action film, Danger USA (Mind Trap), directed by Eames Demetrios, hits the ground running with one of a great many out-of-nowhere illusion moments, as Kincare's Shana fights off a killer in her bedroom by using her cat as a weapon, except that the bedroom is actually in the back of a semi-trailer truck and the entire fight is simply the shooting of a movie scene. Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams) appears as a director. Lyle Waggoner (Wonder Woman) appears an actor who co-stars with Shana. Best of all, Maureen LaVette (America's Most Wanted) graces the screen as a villain operative who has perhaps the worst fake Russian accent in the cinema history. My favorite moment in this endearingly strange everything-but-the-kitchen-sink outing is a terrific vehicular homicide scene. Shana is driving as a male attacker in the passenger seat holds her at gunpoint. She unhooks the man's seatbelt and suddenly puts on the brakes, launching the man through the windshield in front of a pile of furniture trash, where he is impaled by what appears to be a bedpost. She stands over his body, and says, "You can learn a lot from a dummy." This Massacre Video Blu-ray, which presents this feature along with American Rampage, is a win across the board, with nicely filmic image quality. Last night, I watched the Deadly Diamonds DVD that came free with my American Rampage/Danger USA Blu-ray.
A mobster, played by Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams), is orchestrating the perfect scheme by hiring armed robbers to steal a shipment of his diamonds so that he can keep the jewels in addition to claiming a $30,000,000 insurance payment for their theft. Due to a series of misfortunes, however, the diamonds are now in the hands of Desireé, an unwitting call girl played by Kathleen Kane (The People vs. Larry Flynt), and Martin, a nerdy bike messenger played by Kenna Grob. As Martin helps Desireé flee the city, the two of them fall in love, but their romance may be short lived, because every criminal on the planet is searching for them. The 1991 straight-to-video action feature, Deadly Diamonds, directed by Thomas Atcheson, is one of many productions of Krishna Mahadoo (American Rampage, Danger USA) that come across as an outsider's scrambled interpretation of the many such cops-and-robbers genre films that lined theaters during the 1980s. The fact that this one actually makes more sense than American Rampage or Danger USA works against it, because nothing really stands out with the end result. The narrative is basically a less competent precursor to the 1993 hit movie, True Romance. Kane and Grob are likable enough in their roles, as are most of of the actors who play the crooks. The cast redeems this outing, even if the lovebirds-on-the-run predicament of the leads has been done many times before by better filmmakers. Oddly enough, my favorite scene of the film is when a gangster, played by Eli Rich (Lock Up), is coming up with funny one-liners on the spot while shooting passengers in the back of his car. Be on the lookout for Troy Donahue (The Godfather: Part II) in a role that, like Haggerty's, was simply included to provide some marketable name recognition to the proceedings. It's a DVD, but it looks pretty bad even by DVD standards. Last edited by The Great Owl; 02-02-2021 at 06:34 PM. |
