When Franklin was named coach in waiting his contract stated he is due $1 million if he isn't the coach after the 2011 season. I don't understand having a coach in waiting in situations where the coach isn't planning on leaving. It leads to situations like at Florida State where Bowden was largely forced out because they already had their next coach, or they can be useless, like at Texas where Mack Brown has a coach in waiting despite the fact that he has no plans to leave.
Thanks for ruining my day ... god I want someone young whose totally enthused about being here. Yow keeps coaches based on how much they will support her, not how good they can do for the team.

WORST AD in any college sport!

TCU and coach Gary Patterson have agreed to a contract extension. Many believe Patterson is a candidate for the Notre Dame job, especially if they are unable to get Stoops or Brian Kelly, but this likely means he won't consider that job.

since it doesnt look like anyones posted it here yet, bobby bowden announced his retirement today, he will coach the team in their bowl game and then call it quits after 44 years, leaving as the second most winning coach in NCAA history behind joe paterno

I hope every coach turns down Notre Dame. I really like the 'unkown factor' that comes with hiring someone who is not a big name.

Post# 976. And yes, it's kind of sad. Especially the considering the circumstances of his retirement. Still, he'll be remembered as one of the all time greats, no doubt about that.

I see what you're saying, but I'm pretty sure Brian Kelly would sell his soul to be the head coach at Note Dame.

I think Kelly will stay put in Cinci, and I also believe that he will have a pretty good payday for staying.

No way he stays! He wants to win championships and that's just not going to happen at Cincinnati. This year is the best he is ever going to hope for at Cincinnati. Yes they will go to a BCS bowl but they will not be able to compete for championships.

I say he either goes to ND or he replaces another coach from another major program who might leave for ND (Meyer, Stoops, etc).

Cincinnati cannot afford to pay even half of what Notre Dame can and doesn't have anywhere near the facilities. Cincinnati doesn't even have a practice field, they have to practice in the stadium. My high school team had a practice field. A lot of the college football experts are saying Notre Dame isn't interested in Brian Kelly though, because they want a defensive coach. From what I've heard from Notre Dame beat writers on the radio a new coach likely won't be hired until after the National Title game because they want to at least try to go after Urban Meyer and there's no way he'll listen to them during the season. I wouldn't be surprised if Kelly stays at Cincinnati just because he doesn't have any good offers, and hopes the Michigan job will open next year. I don't see Stoops or Meyer leaving their current teams so it's unlikely any high profile jobs will open up.

Dunlap is one of Florida's top players, was the MVP of the 2009 National Championship game, and could be a first round pick if he goes to the NFL this year. I don't know how stupid you have to be to get drunk and drive 5 days before the SEC Title game. If I'm a player I'm not getting drunk this week at all, but at the very least don't drive. This guy probably thinks he's above the law though and that cops would let him off. The way Urban Meyer handles this is going to be huge. I would hope Meyer suspends him but it will be a huge blow to their defense if they lose him so he could let him play and withstand the public's wrath. If Meyer won't suspend him I'd hope the school would overrule Meyer and suspend him, although I'm not sure the school would do that with the Notre Dame job open.
wow what a dumb piece of ...he was projected as a high draft pick too. top 5ish. jesus.

Hard to believe he never spent 5 minutes with Tebow. They're on the same dang team.

Based on recent history I'd say Meyer suspends him for the first play of the game.

Meyer already has suspended him indefinitely, and he will definitely be out Saturday for the SEC Title game. They haven't said if he'll be back for the bowl game. I'd guess he will be, especially if it's the National Championship game.

The SEC Title game will be the first time I watch Florida where they weren't playing LSU this year. Alabama vs. Florida is going to be hopefully an awesome game to watch. Then Florida vs. Texas will be another awesome game for the Championship. (I hate Saban, so want Alabama to lose, my brothers went to UT so want Texas to win the Championship. )

LOL so true!

In other news, UGA fired three defensive coaches, including the Defensive Coordinator. Now begins the search for a new DC. Lots of fans want the Dawgs to somehow land former Bulldog safety Kirby Smart, but he's at Alabama now -- can't see a reason why he'd come back unless he gets paid more $$$.

The Sun Bowl was planning on having Oklahoma play Arizona, in a matchup between Bob Stoops and Mike Stoops, but the Stoops brothers said they'd be uncomfortable facing each other and requested that this matchup not happen, and the Sun Bowl agreed. Assuming Texas wins Saturday Oklahoma will probably be in the Sun Bowl and Arizona will go to the Holiday or Poinsetta Bowl.

Bummer. I was hoping when UGA goes slumming in Shreveport, they'd face a typically good competitor like Oklahoma.

Looks like the Gator Bowl is going to be Florida State versus West Virginia. This will be Bowden's last game as coach and will match him against the team he used to coach. In addition, this is Florida State and Bowden's 27th straight year making a bowl, a streak that started in 1982 in the Gator Bowl against West Virginia.

There was some confusion over whether the Gator Bowl could select Florida State because there's conflicting rules that state the Gator Bowl cannot select a team with 2 more conference losses than another team, and Florida State has 2 more conference losses than Clemson, but another rule states they could select Florida State as long as a team with a 6-2 conference record isn't available. However, if Clemson would win the ACC Title game and the Chick-Fil-A Bowl took Georgia Tech the Gator Bowl would have to take Virginia Tech.
