Wink A World Renowned Film Restoration Expert's Views About Resolution

Actually, there is another Robert whose vast experience with film & video, has probably equipped him to really know best, and that man is Robert A Harris.

Mr Harris is the world renowned film restoration expert who has done meticulous restorations of "Lawrence of Arabia" "My Fair Lady", "Rear Window" "Vertigo", and "Spartacus", among others.

I've communicated with Mr Harris on Home Theater Forum, and his views on the amount of resolution needed for excellent visual results with large 70 foot commercial movie theater screens, are quite interesting.

First of all, though widescreen films that are 35mm productions, such as "No Country For Old Men", look quite good, Mr Harris notes that such expensive productions as "Lawrence of Arabia" and "My Fair Lady" were shot on large format film that has about 4 times the resolution of 35mm film. (Of the more than 45 thousand films that Hollywood has turned out in its more than 100 year history, UNDER ONE HUNDRED were shot in such large, Ultra-quality formats.)

In fact the original camera negative of a large format film such as "Lawrence of Arabia" actually contains about as much resolution as 8k video. However, although "Lawrence" is one of the most vivid and spectacular looking feature length movies, of any type, ever shown in commercial movie theaters, movie audiences were seeing less than an 8k level of fine detail, because film prints that audiences see are always about 2 generations away from what was contained on the original camera negative.

Anyhow, when "Lawrence of Arabia" was being prepared in 2012 to make its debut as a 4k Digital Cinema Package (DCP) for being presented in theaters via 4k digital projectors, as well as having a 1080p Blu-ray made of the film, 8k scanning of each frame of the film's ORIGINAL camera negative was done to give the highest possible picture quality results in the digital medium that the film was being transferred to.

And after Robert A Harris got to view the spectacular visual results that were achieved with the DCP of "Lawrence" as it was projected on a huge screen, Mr Harris later stated that the 4k version of the movie appeared to offer visual quality that closely matched the look of a pristine condition print of that large format film, if that film print was projected in a theater with a well adjusted, quality film projector. Harris has had much experience checking out movie presentations of "Lawrence of Arabia", over the years. And Mr Harris said that the stunning results that the 4k version yields with that movie, convinced him that even with huge 70 foot commercial movie theater screens, 4k projection can provide all of the resolution and detail that such large screens need. And as Harris says, a large majority of the folks who make up movie audiences, would be very likely to end up being uncomfortable, if seating themselves as close to commercial movie screens, as would be necessary, for those people to notice a substantial visual improvement with movies having resolution higher than 4k.

@Blu-rayNut51, Robert Harris is a personal friend and we supply most of his theater review system. Here's a pic of Robert Harris, with me, my wife and the owner of Criterion Collection at our official premier screening of My Fair Lady in our store theater demo room.

The reason for my post is not to brag about some of my great friends, but to tell you unquestionably LG's 88" 8K OLED and Sony's 8K Z9G deliver the very best image quality by far and it's appreciably better than the best 4K TV period. Here's a quick cell phone pic of LG's 88" 8K TV in our showroom.

The 8K image quality is not a small amount better than the best 4K TVs can do it's huge. It's very easy to see the value in these new high-end AI 8K up-conversion processing and premium 8K panels.

It still baffles me though, that the Z9G does not have the same BMD as the Z9D.

In other words, no real reason to "upgrade" if you're a Z9D owner already.

Shame. Awaiting your next move, Sony...

Thumbs up 2019 LG Z9 Signature 8K OLED

All the sound electronics, speakers and the power supply are in stand assembly. I looks like you can wall mount it but it's a really big panel to be doing that. For the panel that's on display, screen uniformity looks very good although not 100% perfect like most OLEDs. I will post more later next week when I have a chance to calibrate the set but so far I was pretty impressed with what I saw.

Another thing you need to keep in mind is this is an OLED so the PQ is going to have those deep blacks which makes content have that vibrant, "3D look" compared to similar 8k LED sets. Just like with 4K the OLED PQ is very different than the LCDs, even the Sony with it's black master drive, etc...

Is 8K Worth It? -- A Consumer's Guide to the 8K Format & TVs - HighDefDigest - 9/30 - Steven Cohen

The following quoted text is from the conclusion.

Quote:
So... Is 8K Worth It?
Well, that really depends on what your expectations or needs really are.
  • If you're upgrading to 8K with the expectation of having a decent amount of actual native 8K content to watch anytime soon... then the answer is no.
  • If you're upgrading to 8K with the expectation of being able to see a sizeable improvement in image detail compared to a similarly sized 4K TV from an average viewing distance... then the answer is also no.
  • If you're upgrading to 8K because you need/want to place an extra-large screen very close to your viewing position without losing image quality... then the answer is yes... so long as you don't mind paying a hefty premium.
In the current market, the primary benefit of 8K really comes down to its higher pixel density for watching upscaled 4K content on a really big screen. Even then, however, the improvements I've seen on displays as big as 88-inches are still very subtle. With that said, the benefits of 8K on TV screens 100-inches or larger -- something the industry is seemingly building toward -- will likley result in a more worthwhile upgrade down the line.

For now, Sony's philosophy on 8K seems to make the most sense. As one of the company's reps explained to me at the 2019 Value Electronics TV Shootout, Sony doesn't currently see 8K as a format successor to 4K in the same way that 4K was to HD or HD was to SD. Instead they view 8K resolution as more of a premium picture enhancement add-on for extra-large screens. With no real expectation for 8K content in the short-term, the company simply feels that an 8K TV's upscaling capabilities and higher pixel density result in the best way to watch 4K on 85-inch screens and larger.

And there is indeed some merit to that concept... once prices come down a little.

To be clear, even though I can't really endorse 8K resolution itself right now as a necessary or sizeable improvement over 4K in a home theater setting, that isn't to say that the current crop of 8K TVs aren't worthwhile. In fact, the LG Z9, Sony Z9G, and Samsung Q900 are easily three of 2019's most impressive display models, and they're all easy recommendations for buyers with deep enough pockets thanks to their incredible HDR, color, and contrast capabilities.

I just can't say that their 8K resolution is a primary selling point.

Unfortunately Fox is not capturing the games in 4K before transmission. They are using 1080P HDR (HLG) then upscaling to 4K:

When OLED 65" 8K TVs sell for less than $3,000 no one will object about 8K.
When owners of OLED 4K TVs are ready to upgrade to their next TVs and the same size of their TVs or larger cost about the same as the new 8K TVs they won't buy another 4K TV.

We might not needed now but 8K TVs are going to be on the walls of video salesfloors just like 4K TVs are right now. The scriptures are on the walls ...

Maybe not, after all you have interlocking panels on a rack interface(micro-LED), rollable OLED's on above floor tables, and the 88" LG OLED is not recommended for wall mounts, weight, should be used on a table! Robert says there is some way to still provide wall mounting.

When you have a phone with an 8K video camera you don't want any display lower than 8K to watch your children play.

How far should you eye be from a 8K 6.5" screen to see the pixels if that comes to be?

Of course I was referring to view your 8K homemade family video from an 8K front projector with a 200" + screen.

It's not very practical to view it on a 6" 8K screen, even if in few years kids will do it to show to their grand kids.
And there is iPad ...

I don't think we can skip 8K before going 16K.
