Oppenheimer (Universal Pictures)

HDR10
Mastering display luminance: 1000 nits white level/0.005 nits black level
MaxCLL: 186 nits
MaxFALL: 147 nits

This is essentially an SDR presentation in HDR. The dynamic range is basically the same and by tonemapping the Blu-Ray to 203 nits (as seen below) gives you a very similar image.

Despite that I still think it looks much better than most overbrightened SDR to HDR masters and it does provide better gradients, especially in dark scenes. Not to mention the wider color gamut and higher resolution, which improves greatly over the Blu-Ray.

Due to the amount of screenshots, they are divided in individual albums. Links in each category below.

Heatmaps HDR - Heatmaps SDR (100 nits, power law 2.4) - Gamut visualization - Tonemaps - Blu-Ray

I guess the conclusion is that Nolan hates 4K UHD Blu-ray.

No HDR, only SDR. No Atmos, only 5.1.

Do you have any brief summary and conclusion from the analysis?

From my quick check, it looks like:
* SDR in HDR container (at least close to, since capped at around 200 nits)
* Barely no WCG outside Rec.709

4K resolution improvement not possible to comment on, and not the purpose of this analysis. Will have to wait for caps at caps-a-holic.

So Deakins hates 4K blu-ray too, considering Blade Runner 2049.

Guys, there is nothing wrong with a conservative grade.

Personally I think it's an excellent presentation. So far it's the only film by Nolan I've really liked as well and I appreciate that he has integrity.

Or his movies are HDR-graded appropriately to the material? Interstellar has MaxCLL of over 3000 nits, while it's perfectly enough for Oppenheimer to look more like SDR.

So he also hates movie theaters?

Atomic bomb explosion at max 200 nits?

And what about this:

You must have hated Deakins when he once said he actually despised HDR. Now he is more open to it as tools, but his grades still mostly stay around SDR range.

This is bringing me flashbacks to this debacle.

That's a fair argument, but those scenes worked in SDR, when I was watching it on the big screen I wasn't thinking "Whoa, can't wait to be blinded by it on UHD!"

And what about this:

This is you, watching "Oppenheimer: The True HDR 20th Anniversary Edition" on your fancy, 10000 nits TV

I refer to movie theaters with Dolby Atmos; they will never screen his movie with sound in that format.

Yeah, since cinemas are not able to display HDR properly with really high brightness, I would have expected an improvement in that regard on 4K BD.

A lot of movies ”work” in SDR, but can still be improved upon in HDR on 4K BD if done properly. That does not mean that all movies must have super high MaxFALL/CLL. Only when appropriate. But for this movie, I would have expected a bit more.

I've asked before but I'd love to see the Bob's Burgers movie (and a bunch of other animated movies tbh).

I have the UHD Blu-ray for Bob's as well as the tools to rip it, so I'd be willing to rip it and...in some unknown and very legal way make it so someone with the tools here just so *happens* to receive it.

MaxCLL is 1215 nits with averages around 492 nits. My biggest highlight captured was 898 nits. FALL is a fairly high 1134 nits but the average is a more-normal 10 nits. Highest average frame I got was just 140 nits.

WCG gets used here and there but nothing to write home about. Some stand out shots:

Apologies for the delay. Was busy during the holiday break. Should have The Lion King (1994) and To Live and Die in LA coming this week.

I don't have either but do have the former on my wishlist. Once I get it I'll analyze it, if someone doesn't beat me to it.

I did just get an alert that my copy of Blackhat will be here tomorrow so I'll probably push that up the list.

Very happy to see this show up today. Highlights are strong but only eclipse 1000 nits a few times. MaxCLL is 1188 nits with an average around 315. MaxFALL is 297 nits with an average of 3.

Brightest highest captured was 1091 nits, average frame 178 nits:

WCG here is plentiful, showing up in a vast majority of my shots, mostly in blues but with hits of yellow and orange as well:

And the bitrate is strong here too, with a mean of 78 Mbps and a peak of 141 Mbps!

Finally, I posted some Director's Cut screenshots in the Blackhat thread, if you're interested in that.

Are we sure the HDR grade was approved by Michael Mann?
