Default Electrical Repair Work on PS3

So, I found out that my HDMI port is busted on my PS3 (through a lightning surge from the coax line of my directv box, which then hit TV, then the PS3).

Does anyone have any experience with working on the internals of a PS3? I'm assuming its some blown resistor/cap somewhere or a bad soldering job for the connections.

That being said, are there any schematics of the motherboard of the PS3? Most likely since its a multi-layer PCB, there will be virtually no chance as it will be somethink extremely small or virtually undetectable, but I at least have to try

I'd like to fix it myself if I can, instead of paying 150ish dollars to sony. The component works fine, but I can't get 1080p *cry*

I recently decided to go back to school to get my degree in Computer Engineering. So come back in 2 years for a somewhat educated answer from me or 4 years for an expert opinion.

Seriously though I haven't heard of anyone here discussing fixing the motherboard on the PS3 unless it was regarding reflowing due to heating issues.

I would just call you insurance and file a claim. I would try to get everything replaced: reciever, tv, and ps3.

can't file a claim. Renters insurance will drop you immediately for filing one... Regardless of amount... I already fixed everything else, its just the PS3 that sucks now...

I think I'm just going to force myself to buy the PS3 slim. Maybe sell my PS3 to someone who doesn't have a tv with HDMI. Everything else works fine, component/optical.

anyone have an issue where the picture is black with just individual different color dots (via HDMI) but the sound works fine via optical?

Tried all the power offs and resets of the video - tv recognizes the change in resolution via HDMI but the image doesn't change from black screen with different color dots...

Near launch 60 GB unit...didn't really want to spend the money on a slim right now but might have to...

Any help or suggestions?

Just to let you know, it worked fine last night...we were watching Sons of Anarchy on DVD and stopped it right @ 11:30 - just went to watch the last episode on the same disk and the PS3 was not reacting to the remote or the controlled. Front button pushes didn't work so a hard power off was needed. Then the black screen came up...

Update - I let it cool down a bit and it is working on a different TV with both the component and HDMI but there are sparkles on the screen - like pixels that keep turning on and off...
Sounds like an overheated video processor, doesn't it?

OK - I thought I was OK but then as it stayed on, the sparkles showed up little by little increasing and when I put a DVD in the drive and back to the black screen

It seems to be getting very hot and the fan doesn't seem to running at any time other than start-up

Ok...so would the update fix this or do i need a new hdd? I'm guessing ps3 system data files are hidden on the hdd. If thats so then do i just replace it? Reformating did not work.

Oh I thought that the problem resolved itself and you were wondering if you should be concerned, gotcha.

Okay, what you should do it go to the PS3's 'Secret Menu'. To do this, turn off your PS3 and hold down the power button until you hear multiple beeps. If it doesn't come the first time, power off and try again.

Once you are there, select the 3rd option I believe to rebuild the database or whatnot.

If you have any questions while doing it, let me know.
