I still haven't recieved the Studio 60's that were ordered on March 30th, so today I went to the dealer to find out where what was happening. He told me that the 60's are back ordered and he couldn't give me a time frame of when they would be in. The store offered to give me a good deal on a set of 100's if I don't want to wait any longer. The 60's were 1750 and the 100's are 2799. Is that a good enough deal to go for it? Ever since I ordered the 60's it's always been in the back of my mind that I should have ordered the 100's, maybe this is a sign. These prices are all in CAD dollars and plus tax.

That's about 15% off the old MSRP so it's not a bad deal.. Don't know the new prices are but it'll probably be hard to find them at that price somewhere else. Do you know if they had these in store already before the price increase? I paid a few hundred less last year but I bought a few things from there before and my dealer will always take a bit more off with a cash payment. Either way if it's from before April 1st 15% ain't bad and if it's newer then it's a pretty good discount and you won't have to wait!! It seems a lot of people have been waiting pretty long since a whole lot of orders were probably placed before April.

The price for the 60's is before April 1st and the 100's were ordered after April 1st. A customer returned them without even opening the boxes, I saw the factory seal still intact. I think the new msrp is 3699 but I could be wrong. The thing is if I choose the 100's I'll problably need to get an external amp so that will add to the cost. My reciever could drive the 60's without a problem but I'm not sure about the 100's. What are you using to drive yours?

Aces,

he uses a marantz receiver for a pre-processor and an Emotiva Amp(3-channel) to power the front speakers.

Im all about criticism it makes you smarter and some ways.
deeman,

bookshelf speakers are a great option for HT use. Esp. if you buy them from a line above the towers you are considering. See typically the quality of a higher lines bookshelf is equal or better then the highest tower of a lower series line. The bookshelf may not have the slam on the low end bass, but mid-range detail, depth, sound stage imaging and everything else is typically better, and all you need is a good sub to pick up the low-end.

I am considering the Dynaudio Excite X16s or Focus 140s bookshelves for a new front sound stage because the towers are way out of my price range, towers for about $2500-3600 where as the bookshelfs are about $1300-1700, add in the cost of a center and Im between $2k and $2500. So you can see that bookshelfs can be excellent options.

You can run the 60s or the 100s without an external amp. When you eventually get the funds to get an amp it will be an added bonus and make them that much better. I wouldn't steer away from either the 60 or 100 just because you can't get an amp right away...build it over time and enjoy the upgrades one step at a time.

I've already paid for the 60's and would just have to pay the difference. I'm going to get the 100's, seems like a bigger discount than the 60's. I'd have to wait until X-Mas time to get an amp because the difference between the two uses up all my budget at this time. Sometimes that's what bugs me about this hobby, I spent 2k on a receiver and still wondering if it's good enough. Maybe my expectations are too high or I should just except the fact that sometimes that's just the way it goes. Thanks for everybody's help.

You will be fine to power either speakers with that receiver. I guess its up to you, but if you can swing the 100s and don't want to keep waiting, then get the 100s. If you want to save the money, wait and get your amp sooner...then do that too.

Yup you'll be satisfied with a full 7.1 with your receiver for now. That thing is a beast and should have no problems handling "P" Refs.
When you can finally get an amp it'll be a big bonus and will be something to look forward to and hold off that upgrade bug from anything else!
Enjoy them man you'll be happy with either 60's or 100's!!

Default 100s overkill for the room?

All this talk about upgrading is making me jealous... All I can afford right now is a couple of BDs after payday.

So, hypothetically if I was to upgrade from my Monitor set up would the 100s be overkill for my room? I'm sitting about 9 feet from the front speakers. The room is not set up to maximize acoustics; it is the best I could manage with my living room. (Take a look at my photos.)

Two questions: 1) Would the 60s be better suited for the space or would the 100s be better? I guess I'm wondering is bigger always better or do you need to take into account the space you are in?
2) How much of a difference would I notice going from the Monitor 9s and supporting speakers to the Studio series? (I'm almost afraid to ask.)

Hey, don't get me wrong. I'm enjoying my system, but I always wonder what it would be like to get higher end speakers. For me audio is about 70% of the pleasure I get from BDs.

I guess it is all relative. Put it this way. When I first put in Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds I couldn't believe what was coming out of my speakers. This may sound corny but I had tears in my eyes. When I first cranked up Cars I got emotional. I love good sound and my Monitors didn't disappoint. You will not be disappointed. I can't comment on anything other than what I have. I really am curious about the potential of higher end speakers. Are they worth the $$? At what point does spending the extra $1000 not make that much of a difference? If I had Signature 8s for towers would I crap my pants when I first turned them on? Would they make the Monitors sound like tiny PC speakers? These are all things I have no idea about. One day I'd like to spend an hour in my local high end AV store and audition the Studios and Signature just for fun. Or perhaps ignorance is bliss and I should just enjoy what I have.
