Dude! You should be watching them on Blu anyway. They Look and sound fantastic. Leave that streaming crap for your horror films.

Role Models Unrated Version

i'm a big fan of Paul Rudd's. and i usually enjoy what Seann William Scott brings to his characters. and essentially, the characters they play here are their most famous. Paul Rudd plays the character he was in The 40 Year-Old Virgin and Scott relives his Stifler character from the American Pie franchise. not that it's a bad thing, but i find it oddly humorous how films these days have actors i guess play themselves over and over and over again.

but then again Adam Sandler (with the exception of a few roles), Jim Carrey (same few roles and hairstyles), Chris Farley and Will Ferrell (with some roles excluded as well) have been playing the exact same money making characters for decades, so it shouldn't be that much of a surprise.

and even Christopher Mintz-Plasse reprises his McLovin role from Superbad, and Jane Lynch is a mix of her character from The 40 Year-Old Virgin and Glee. needless to say, all the characters in the film have been seen before, but they're finally just all merged together in Role Models. and the best part luckily, is that these characters are enjoyable. and that's what really matters here.

the film is a brisk 90+ minutes, and there were very few instances where i wasn't at least chuckling. and there were a few big time laughs. but also a few crude jokes that tried too hard and i just kind of sighed at.

the film is also way too sappy at times and has a very cliched, over the top sugar coated ended that everyone can see coming four miles away, but it's not like this is a film that needed a surprise ending. i also felt the film started very funny (first 30 minutes) and then suddenly there was about 10 minutes of "pretty serious" story time so the characters could learn more about each other.

the end, while kind of drawn out, was pretty hilarious and what made it even funnier for me is that i (sadly) actually know of people who dress up and play these dungeons and dragons type games. in public. while dressed up. and dungeons. and dragons. yeah...

i enjoyed it. was worth a rental. wouldn't buy it though.

3/5

like The Leopard, I like how this shows the internal struggle/emotions of a monarch, as the socio-political landscape of his country undergoes vast change, and his struggle to accept his new role. Most people can relate to this, especially in today's economy, like a dude who just lost his job and has to learn how to live without his house he's lived in for 20 years. Accepting a new role forced by a new set of circumstances. Prefer the Leopard by a nose.
Like The Fall and some others before that, I think that the great themes you refer to simply weren't conveyed effectively in the film. Those are the themes that SHOULD have been there prominently, but due to pacing and script issues simply weren't in a strong fashion.

Medem's directing skills alone make Sex and Lucia worth seeing. It's a film that made little sense to me upon first viewing it, but then it finally clicked and I was almost overwhelmed by the complexity and symbolism he so effectively uses. Many people will hate the film and simply not understand it, which I totally understand. For me, however, it worked.

As for Room in Rome, I've received word from our friendly reviewer on this site that the blu will be region B locked, which is unfortunate bc netflix doesn't even have it listed. If anyone is interested in a great lesbian love story, check out Lost and Delirious with Piper Perabo. The movie is meant to be Shakespearean in nature and has direct references to Shakespeare. It's about two girls that fall in love at a boarding school in Canada. It's certainly melodramatic but Perabo's acting is exceptional and moving.

Black Narcissus 4.5/5
Bottle Rocket 3.5/5
For All Mankind 5/5

Vivre Sa Vie 4/5
Wings of Desire 3/5 ( I Know you like this one Surf but i didnt do it for me)
Yojimbo 4.5/5 Sanjuro 4/5

I still have to see Days of Heaven, Che, Paris Texas, Summer Hours, Playtime, and Walkabout. (I own these or the list would be much longer)
That's quite the list of films you have yet to see. Days of Heaven arguably has the best PQ and it's arguably the most beautiful film ever made. Che has great direction and feels authentic, although the pacing is sometimes a bit off. Paris, Texas is a slow-burner but has one of the best monologues in film history; it's a film that stays with you. Summer Hours is simple but conveys its themes effectively. Playtime is an absolute joy to watch and there's nothing like it. Walkabout is decent enough but I didn't love it.

Yeah - its been a while since I've seen it so I'd need to rewatch to talk specifically on that point (i.e., how well the script executed the themes).

May I recommend Tipping the Velvet (2002)

I love the title too.

An unusual love story told in three episodes charts the course of Nan (Rachael Stirling), an ingénue who discovers a sexually charged world of male impersonators, actors and affluent women looking for female companionship in the usually controlled and corseted 1890s. She eventually takes up with a comely cross-dresser (Keeley Hawes) but soon learns she can only depend on herself.

I think a second viewing of The Fall might have a different impact. In a few months.

I know I am in the wrong, but it's admittedly hard to take Medem seriously because of how much sex he seems to incorporate in his films. To the outsider's perspective, speaking of his films sounds as if one is critiquing Playboy articles.

(No disrespect to him... I hope his films are brilliant. I've just never seen that type of movie before -- such as In the Realm of the Senses or any of these)

Iron Man and Enemy of the State 5/5 scores for both in all 3 categories, still love Enemy of the State 13 years later.
