Yeah, I guess they could have just cloned everyone fifty times or something. Just a thought I had about getting the emperor back in the fold. The issue with the new films is that it's gonna be hard to get a good, legitimate villain. After Vader and Sidious, it's hard to top that.
Correct, but then again, he did come up with Maul. Dooku and Grievous were also great creations IMO, even though all 3 were under developed in the PT (luckily there is the Clone Wars tv show).

Alright guys, I'm a little late to the party, and didnt scroll back all 50 pages and such, so if this has been mentioned, please don't kill me.

A few years back, (early - mid 90's) Timothy Zahn was contracted to author the next trilogy. "The Thrawn trilogy" is what it was dubbed. It takes place about 10yrs after jedi. The books were pretty good IMO.
As it has been stated that lucas has been toying with this idea of another trilogy for some time, does anyone know if this storyline arc it may foolow, or was this just one of many stories written in the SW universe?

It has been discussed but the general consensus on here is that they probably won't do that story arc with these new films. Maybe if the fan
reaction is strong enough they'll do it with the releases after that, though.
As for what storyline these will take, we simply don't really know - Lucas has written treatments for three more episodes, but I'm assuming they've come more from his mind than adapted from some fiction written about SW by others. It'll probably have something to do with the characters we see in the original films, but at some time in the future - Mark Hamill has apparantly claimed that Lucas said on the set back when they made the original trilogy that he wanted to do a film about all the characters much older. Who knows?

I was having a discussion about this yesterday, and finally figured out what bothers me.
The PT were not what my childhood memories and fan mentality wanted. But they were alright, and they were original stories from the original creator. Now if someone else does it and they are mediocre they will be less than because they are not from George Lucas. Imagine if someone else had written and made the exact same movie Phantom Menace was. It would be even more hated than it currentley is. We've all still seen this multiple times (Yes some of you are ready to type NO I HAVE NOT! I only watch my OT laserdiscs now, but the majority of us have) If it wasn't George Lucas's we would much ore easily dismiss it. Now this new trilogy will be based on GL's treatments and he will be a creative consultant, but after that what if they let someone like Brett Ratner do to the franchise like what he did to the X-men series?

I honestly don't care at this point who does what to Star Wars, the video games have not had any direct George Lucas involvement nor do the novels and those are all very popular. Not to mention the comic books, which again has not had any direct input from Lucas. In fact, I am pretty sure Lucas even stated he discounts the EU stuff as official canon anyways. Look at it this way, Stan Lee was not involved with the Phoenix Saga of X-Men and that is heralded as the highlight of the frigging franchise. So I disagree with the need to have the original creators input. I see Star Wars becoming more in line with Star Trek now than anything, it will keep going and the fanbase will eat it up but not no matter what you can't please everyone so there will always be a divide.

I love the prequels, and I don't mind the special editions, but I still HATE Jar Jar Binks with a passion. I also like the EU books, except the stupid New Jedi Order. From what I can tell, nevermind what you read online, I go to a book store and those Star Wars novels are all still best sellers, those comic books are still on shelves and selling like hot cakes, the DVD's are fetching high prices on ebay, the toys are selling faster than they can make them, where I stand all the hate is just noise, it doesn't affect the sales at all.

Also all those kids who grew up with Phantom Menace, they are the ones who are growing up now and showing it to their kids, like it or not they are here to stay, and I for one LOVE it. I will take the good with the bad just keep feeding me more Star Wars.

Almost every single person I know that loves movies wants the UOT as well.
I'm a fan of Lucas, very thankful for what he's given me. I would also love to have the UOT on BD. Logically, I can only think that half the initial sales of the trilogy would be spent on the UOT, IF they were to be released....and that figure is VERY generous! The number is probably closer to 1in3, or 1in4. This is no slight against hardcore fans, it's just they are hopelessly outnumbered by the casual fan/fans that are content with the BDs they already have.

Thats a good assessment except that even some of us rabbid fans, like me, are at least content with the SE versions of the original trilogy. Sure, I hate the obvious lame additions, like the Jabba scene at Mos Eisly, Greedo shooting first, the "noooooooo", and some other things. As we have discussed though, me and others are OK with and even happy about the effects clean up, the better sound mix, the CGI backgrounds for some scenes that make them look more like the PT. I mean, the PT looks "newer" even though it takes place quite a few years earlier than the OT. That always bugged me.

All that being said, I cant get why they just dont throw the UOT into a disc set and be done with it. Why not satisfy ALL the fans? Just do it. However, if they dont, Im OK with that too.

Here's where I come down on this subject. I have loved SW since the age of 5 when I saw the Star Destroyer sweep across the screen. I loved the SE's of SW when they were theatrically rereleased. I LOVED the PT trilogy beyond comprehension & rational thought upon it's theatrical release. Now that all the hype has subsided from all that, & after close examination I can say beyond a doubt I STILL LOVE SW in all it's forms, warts and all. These movies were never exactly high art. They were designed & executed to be escapist adventures & above all else fun. Guess what mission accomplished . . . they are FUN. They are a FREAKING BLAST!!! I am greatful to GL for giving me decades of mind blowing entertainment on a level I've NEVER experienced since.
In the fututre after I own the UOT on blu-ray & I'm in the mood for a simple adventure story of a farm boy from Tantooie who with the help of a few friends saves the galaxy, the UOT will be what I watch. When I'm in the mood for a grand sweeping SciFi fantasy style epic about about innocence, corruption, & redemption I will watch I - VI as GL meant it to be seen.
Now don't get me wrong there are things GL should not have done. But there are just as many things he did that I am glad he fixed. Bottom line is that the man gave all of us an incredibly entertaining fantasy world to dream of. STAR WARS is now & 4EVER will be the quintessential fantasy adventure of all time. I really believe GL has just ensured that by handing it over to the mouse!

There was an interview before Ep. I was ever released where GL said that the SWPT will look newer & cleaner than the OT. His reasoning was that it should look this way because it is after the Empire takes control that everything starts to fall apart and begin to look more industrialized and run down. After a dark power taking control it would make sense that they would destroy of effectively ruin almost everything that was once beautiful or had any sense of individualism. On the other hand he may have just said that so he'd have an excuse to play with all the cgi tech toys he could LOL!

Default Star Wars Episode VII-IX Who should direct them?

I know there is already a thread on the sale and new episodes, but I wanted to see who everyone would like to direct the new trilogy. It doesn't have to be the same director for the whole trilogy.

I'll start things off. Here are some of the names I wouldn't mind seeing in the director's chair.

Steven Spielberg - No need to list why
JJ Abrams - Star Trek, Super 8
David Yates - Harry Potter 5-8
Rupart Wyatt - Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
Chris Columbus - Harry Potter 1-2, Percy Jackson

Like but unavailable
Peter Jackson - LOTR, The Hobbit
Joss Whedon - Avengers

Gore Verbinski is my pick if anyone can use a big budget(dude can make great action sequences) big story and pull off the Star Wars charm, it's Gore in my opinion.

Well we can take Whedon out of the runnning since he is tied up with Avengers 2 releasing in 2015, the supposed same year that Ep7 is slated for.

So going forward, why dont we vote on who could do it. I like Brad Bird, esp after MI4. Sam Mendes maybe, although i didnt love some of the shaky cam stuff in Qof S. May change mind after Skyfall.

JJ Abrams could pull it off. He seems to have the right amount of storytelling and action capabilities.

PJ definitely knows grand scale, but I dont know how much of the SW's universe he is familiar with and what he'd do with it. Definitely could handle special effects and 3D

But it also depends on what kind of stories they are telling. So i guess we'll see.

As far as a potential UOT release goes I'm okay with a new surround mix but would like to have the original stereo as an option as well. As for the visual part I hope they don't just re-edit the current versions; I'd REALLY like to see the colour timing restored to what it originally was. To have the original title and crawl on the first movie would be great too but certainly not a deal breaker. I'd also be okay with cleaning up things like matte boxes but definitely don't want to see any new effects shots.
Just put both versions out there and everyone is happy. I don't like the new versions but I'm not on some campaign to have them eradicated. I can just ignore them and those of you who prefer the new changes can ignore the originals.
It's a good thing when EVERYBODY is happy... isn't it???
