Destoroyah is my top pick, though there's a number of other foes that could work. Hedorah is similar to Destoroyah (well, really the other way around since Hedorah is older), and would also be a formidable opponent. Plus Adam Wingard ranks both Godzilla vs. Hedorah and Godzilla vs. Destoroyah in his top five, so I could see him go to one of those two.

If not a single monster, then I could see an alien invasion. Imagine a twosome of Gigan and Megalon, or perhaps Mechagodzilla (remember he/it was constructed by aliens originally, before he became a man-made machine - though the latest incarnation in the anime trilogy has gone back to its roots as an alien weapon).

Yeah, I would like to see the Aliens return from the showa, and have an upgraded Mecha.

Also I think this movie might connect to GvK. In a detailed test screening leak, there is an end scene that shows and I'm quoting...

Bear McCreary to Score Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Will Use Ifukube Themes

One of the biggest announcements to come out of the Godzilla panel at San Diego Comic Con, was the film's composer. The incredible Bear McCreary will be taking over scoring duties from the last film's Alexandre Desplat.

McCreary joins Masaru Sato, Michiru Oshima, Koh Otani and the legendary Akira Ifukube as a composer of the Godzilla franchise.

Speaking of Ifukube, those who wanted to hear Godzilla's classic theme in the 2014 film will get their wish next year. Godzilla's theme by Ifukube will make a comeback next year. Director Michael Dougherty responded to a question from the audience, confirming Godzilla's classic theme (and maybe others) will be in the movie:

"The answer is yes. We will finally hear Godzilla's classic theme--Possibly some other themes"

Theres a theory that Charles Dance plays Tom Hiddleston's character in Skull Island. The director says a character from that movie is in this.

If Ghidorah survives I want Caesar in G3. Then we can have Godzilla, King of the monsters, King Kong, King Ghidorah, and King Caesar. We'd have a full deck of cards to find out who's the real king. A royal rumble.
Maybe that statue is really a freaky King Caesar and not from The Exorcist?

Personally, I'm glad that Gareth Edwards is NOT directing this film. Because I think, judging from the trailer, that Michael Dougherty has done far better with his Godzilla sequel than Gareth did for the original. It's, judging from the trailer, 100 times better. It was Mothra and King Ghidorah that pushed my praise for this upcoming sequel that really clinched it for me. I also think it'll be a bigger hit than Godzilla. The first movie lost because I think that none of the classic Godzilla monster villains appeared in the film.

I think this film will lose the sense of scale Edwards is really good at. Say what you want about his films, but he knows how to film them and make big things feel big. Hopefully Dougherty can too.
