The Jap blu remains my go-to version. Accurate colours, decent detail levels and great audio.

Yeah I don't envision letting my Jap blu go. It's audio is and it doesn't have that warm teal tint of the (slightly cropped)remaster.

Even if it is revisionist, I still think the existing 4K transfer is very good.

But having a copy in MA was definitely preventing me from buying the 4k Heat from iTunes last night. The HD copy has since been removed from MA and the 4k has been purchased through iTunes.

All of the old UV codes and I believe some older MA codes can be redeemed directly in iTunes. You can easily tell because they have 12 digits. The old codes for Paramount movies can actually be redeemed at least twice. I was able to redeem my MI 4K set at both iTunes and Vudu.

I thought this was just going to be a 4K version of the prior edition that Fox put out on BD, which was based on a 4K scan? If there's a 4K streaming version out, that might be a good example of what to expect (but with better compression).... That's my guess. Unless this happens to be another Home Alone, where the prior Fox edition was from a 4K master, and they went ahead and did yet another 4K master.

I don't think anyone is expecting Heat to be a reference quality disc given the source, but that's a pretty large assumption. For one, Heat is Mann's baby and I'd be surprised if he didn't want to be involved on some level, whether that's refining the current master or rescanning the prints. For two, Mann loves playing with the cuts, grades, and timing of his movies. A lot. I doubt he'd pass up another opportunity get his paws on the UHD.

Honestly, he's probably too busy with Tokyo Vice right now to do any of the above and that's a potential reason why this thing is getting delayed and/or not officially announced.

He's supposed to only direct the pilot on Tokyo Vice. He's an exec producer sure but that shouldn't take up all his time.

It was shut down just as it started filming because of Covid, and then resumed shooting in November, and production on the pilot alone lasted for many months. Mann is overseeing things in general, but he's also likely in the edit for the time being.
