I'm saying as far as the materials being available. I would also say that the potential of a Scream boxset UHD release from Scream Factory is quite feasible. They've worked with Paramount and Lionsgate before on titles and were able to get access to Halloween 1-5 OCN. There's clout there.

Oh I understand, I just don’t think the materials are the issue. It’s the people running the show who don’t much care.

And yes, I also understand that Shout and Paramunt have a relationship but Par don’t “own” Scream, it’s still a Miramax film. Par have the distribution rights i.e. they’re the monkey, not the organ grinder, and Miramax don’t often lease their stuff out AFAIK. Viacom do own 49% of Miramax but I’m still not sure that that translates to a Shout boxset as an elderly franchise like Halloween is one thing, Scream is another. And Par do not license out product for 4K release, or so it’s said, so a potential Shout set would be BD only.

Scream Factory does not work with Lionsgate, Halloween 6, H20, and Resurrection were directly licensed from Miramax. As a courtesy, Miramax requested the restored Producer’s Cut master be provided to Lionsgate. But nothing else was, not even the proper 2.35 H20 master.

Lionsgate only licenses out existing discs as is. Halloween, Halloween 4, and Halloween 5 were direct licenses from Compass Pictures/Trancas. HIi and HIII are licensed from Universal and were never under Lionsgate.

Scream 4 is with Spyglass through their acquistion of Lantern Entertainment. Lantern bought The Weinstein Company assets but it is not clear if Spyglass is going to bother doing anything with thess aside from digital releases by Lionsgate. Lionsgate has a physical deal with Spyglass but LG has to wait for Spyglass to approve releases.

If Scream Factory was able to make the Producer's Cut happen of Halloween 6, a Miramax title, it can happen again.

Ultimately, if any third-party were to do a physical release, it'll likely be Scream Factory and that wouldn't stomp on any streaming deal the studios would be doing, anyways.

Lack of a 4K DC is disappointing but not unexpected and not a deal-breaker.

Thanks for the corrections on Miramax’s involvement with Shout. Bodes better than I’d reckoned, though I then wonder why Shout hadn’t tapped them up already to do a Scream set…

I'd like the uncut sure, but beggars can't be choosers. I'll be tickled just to get a proper theatrical release and trash the god awful bluray.

Hope Scream sells like gangbusters and Paramount give us more. Pulp Fiction, No Country For Old Man, Gangs of New York, and Jackie Brown... these are all Miramax?

I've owned Scream on vhs in a deluxe set I think they called it, dvd and blu-ray. Most of the changes are so minor I never even noticed them until I read about them online. I'm not saying they are not worth having but this isn't something like Kingdom of Heaven that is almost an hour longer.

If you grew up with the theatrical cut then certainly the uncut version wouldn't mean that much to you. But if you're like me and grew up with the unrated version, then it's a big deal. "But it's only 20 seconds!" Doesn't matter. It's still jarring. Even to this day I noticed the cuts and can't stand them. I'm genuinely upset about it. It's made even worse by the fact that they could so easily fix it, but they refuse to. The R-version is a bastardization.

Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting people boycott the UHD. I haven't even made a decision myself yet. I'm just saying that it's perfectly reasonable to be annoyed by the absence of the once widely available director's cut. That so many are quick to defend the R-rated cut is a surprise to me.

Widely available is debatable here. It was only on Laserdisc in the US and some countries got it on DVD.

I thought the US got it on VHS, too?

Even if it was only LD I'd still count that as widely available (as in you could buy it if you wanted to).

Yes. Some of the first run VHS had it, but it wasn’t advertised as such.

You asked a question, I gave you an example. I'm not obsessed about it, but go off. I'm sure we'll be hearing more about it from you than me.

It was a question about Scream. Not every director's cut in existence.

I didn't grow up with either version as I was in college when Scream was released in theaters. I had the uncut vhs version up till when my vcr finally died and then bought the DVD. The majority of people have probably never seen the uncut version, at least in the US, with it only being on vhs and laser disc. I think it was also only on early vhs copies. Many coworkers I've talked to have never owned a vcr or even heard of laser disc if they are younger. I get being upset it's possibly not coming to 4k but when a whole generation has never seen that version I can see why Paramount might not bother.

Paramount won't bother because people will buy it regardless. Then in a few years you can re-release it uncut and people will buy it again. If I was a capitalist company, I would do exactly the same thing.
