So turning off the subtitles for English turns off ALL the subtitles (even Mandarin sections)?

Maybe comparing SC's 3D to that of Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange is setting the bar too high?
Yeah that's definitely a possibility. This may in the end be similar to Black Panther which also great 3D moments but maybe not quite at the level of Strange and Marvel. You can see with all 3 films that they spent some time and money on 3D. Whereas in Black Widow while they did a nice job, it reminds me a little of Monster Hunter in that it's definitely the best way to see it but not top tier MCU 3D.

I just remember watching it and seeing so many opportunities for really good 3D. Here's hoping

Is the subtitle issue 100% confirmed on the 3D disc yet ?. Sorry if I missed this.

No, but previous releases, including Black Widow, have only had full English (non-SDH) subtitles. Disney's Japanese 3D (and 2D, with a handful of exceptions, usually for their Buena Vista / Touchstone titles) Blu-rays have always been authored for Japan only, with original and Japanese dubbed (if available) audio only and Japanese subtitles, along with English subtitles for English language films, a practice which used to be more common in Japan and dates back to the LD era. It's actually surprising that Disney seem to leave the translations in their English subtitles, as many foreign releases only provide English subtitles for English dialogue, but I guess Disney just adds everything in there, now.

In fact, now that I think about it, the track on Black Widow might actually be English SDH, because I thought I saw the subtitles move around when someone was talking on one side of the screen. Possibly, the captions were removed, but if not, then it would be the exact same track prepared for the US releases.

So far, by the way, none of this applies to Disney's Japanese 4K UHD releases (of Western Disney content) because all those discs are authored for multiple countries. For example, the Japanese 4K UHD disc for Shang-Chi will be identical to the one sold in the UK (and some other countries), because we know the UK 4K disc has Japanese audio and subtitles. Obviously, this also means the Japanese 4K disc will not have the subtitle issue that the 3D and 2D discs will.

I haven't read of anyone in Japan with an early copy or a review copy being checked, so appears to be an educated guess based on prior releases

That’s basically what I was asking if anyone had the disc yet to confirm.

If it can be done, would there be any way of controlling where the subs are in 3D space? (i.e. it would be incredibly annoying if they appeared to sit behind any of the image which, by default, I assume they would some of the time?)

Subtitles are usually never put in the middle of the screen. They are below. So tired of these petty subtitles issues here. We should be glad there is even English subtitles on it. Since its from Japan we could have been in a situation with no English subtitles on at all. Then there really would be an issue to complain about.

‘They are below’ doesn’t apply in a movie with IMAX scenes.

The important thing is we are getting this movie in 3D Blu-ray, but it’s hardly petty. Unnecessary subtitles (and if you are a native English speaker, they are unnecessary for 70% of this movie) can be very distracting for some people and detract from the movie experience. It’s a shame that this is the case given that people are also having to pay $70ish to import this.

Like I said, I’m grateful we get a 3D Blu-ray, and I’m lucky enough to have an Oppo player so I can load external subs which mostly negates the issue for me, but I completely understand why some people find the subtitles to be an issue. For some people, unnecessary subtitles can be so distracting they can take your attention off the movie and 3D itself.

Yes but if you’re using an OPPO for IMAX scenes it’s going to be crappy anyhow. The OPPO doesn’t render subs in 3D so in scenes where the subs overlap moving pictures it’s going to give you a headache like comin at ya. It’s a quick solution but not a good one

I agree. It's annoying as hell to watch a movie with the sub titles on. It ruined Black Widow for me. Now saying this, I am buying Shang-Chi. I wonder about myself sometimes. This being a completest is a pain. I'm a gluten for punishment and too stupid to realize it.

IMAX scenes tend to be action scenes light on dialogue so it’s not a big deal. The lack of depth is mildly distracting but far less distracting than having unnecessary subs on for the whole movie

This release likely won't be the IMAX version. But if it is, it's the whole movie.

Would we call that a pun? Either way

With today's sound mixing burying the dialogue, and today's actors too often mumbling their lines, I have found that I prefer subs in my films.

Perhaps films should stop using foreign languages in English-speaking films for dialogue that the director wants English-speaking audiences to understand? For a film that is not predominantly in English then OK, but it really is risible how so many of the characters in Shang Chi, except for his mom, will switch from speaking Chinese to English in the same conversation. Just speak English the whole time and be done with it.

It is strange that Shang-chi's mom does not speak English even though she lived in the English-speaking world, while her sister does speak English even though she did not live in the English-speaking world.

There's one scene where Shang Chi is speaking to Katy in English, then switches to Chinese to deliver what seems like a proverb, only to then repeat it in English. Wholly superfluous because we know Katy understands Chinese.

It is not "risible" in any way, shape, or form. How many languages do you speak? Those of us who are bilingual or multilingual do that A LOT. Like, almost all the time. Not every idea can be best expressed in one language. You would already know this if you spoke more than one fluently.

How do you know where Shang-Chi's mother and aunt did or did not live?

Again, people who speak multiple languages do this kind of thing all the time. It is a lot of fun sometimes to say an expression in one language and follow it up with the same or a similar expression in another language.
