We know beyond all doubt that he fully intended to (and did) record live cannons, and the video makes it clear that they WANTED lots of BOOM. I say that if we don't "know" that those cannons were meant to hit HARD (Again, I find it difficult to believe that he wanted wimpier cannons, wanted a wimpier depiction of a sea battle), then I am free to prefer the HARDER hitting version, and no one can say I am wrong. What person with a capable sub wouldn't want that? |

I thought it was weird to learn Kieslowski wanted 'Blue' to have an ugly piss-yellow coloring, especially when I was used to the bluer coloring on the U.S. release. None-the-less, I can't say the filmmaker was 'wrong' for not doing it the way that made sense to me. That said, as someone who has seen all sorts of things botched and screwed with in the process of putting discs onto physical media - both intentionally and by mistake - I'm absolutely open to the possibility those frequencies should be there, and that Weir would be upset to find they aren't. But I think it's unreasonable to make assumptions about filmmaker intent without more information. Last edited by sidetracked1; 08-12-2025 at 04:07 AM. |

Dunno if the videos posted above were derived from the special features of the DVD set (haven't clicked on them just yet), but I do recall that Weir messed with the sound of the live cannons. In one of the documentaries of the collector's DVD set, Weir explains how O'Brien described in the novels a "bell sound" the cannons make when fired. Weir didn't like the sound and had that removed in post. So, although I am sure he wanted the cannon blasts to have impact, he wasn't aiming for 100% authenticity.

Among the last blockbusters released on LD were The Matrix and Star Wars Episode 1 (Japanese LD only) from 1999. However, next to the DVD we had a D-Theater (D-VHS) release. I suspect that both the original masters for the Blu-rays of M&C and Die Hard (equally released as D-Theater digital tape) came from these early HD masters. Noticed the screenshot comparison posted in this thread between the Blu-ray and the UHD BD. There are various Blu-rays where the screenshot comparisons didn't compel me to add the UHD version to my collection, but Master & Commander is such a drastic improvement in terms of image resolution that it constitutes the proverbial no-brainer. Has anyone received their Deep Discount order yet? Are they still saying it's unavailable? It's kind of annoying that they took pre-orders and then have no stock to fulfill those pre-orders. I placed my order on July 17th at 1pm and i know several other people here placed orders the same day and haven't received their orders yet.

One could also say that one found it hard to believe, that with all that equipment of yours, you still found no fault with the faulty 5.1 track on the Timecop UHD from Shout.

What are you talking about?? I've never posted ANYTHING about Timecop. You're obviously confusing me with someone else. Try not to make a false claim next time. |

If I said 'it's simply not credible that Michael Mann wanted the 4K of 'Heat' to be so dark', the clear implication would be that I believed what we got was not what Mann wanted, that it would be against his wishes. (To be clear, I don't personally find 'Heat' too dark, just picking a recent issue that bothered a lot of people). |

I also said it's hard to believe, which is essentially saying the same thing. That is NOT the same thing as saying I KNOW. "I wanted wimpier cannons, even though we went through all the trouble of getting LOTS of BOOM from LIVE CANNONS". The second part of that sentence indeed undermines the credibility of the first part.

It really does suck, but what good is it, to keep posting about it on here? Us "pedestrians" on this forum can change diddley-doo about it, can't we? If you're so passionate about this, put your energy to some practical use and try finding someone in charge at the physical media department at Dixney and make HIM raise an eyebrow... At this point, every post on this thread is like [Show spoiler] For me personally the DVD's DTS track was really an eye-opener, as it was with this track that I first tested my 5.1 system and the battle scene in the beginning truly floored me! I was already disappointed to see that track's LFE not being reproduced with the lossless track of the bluray release, so I honestly didn't (really) expect it to be corrected again with this 4k release. But I was certainly hoping for it... |

If filmmakers kept everything - untouched and unmodified- they worked really hard to get, films would all be 4 hours long, and be overloaded with sounds and images that didn't work in the final version. |

But, today I did receive a shipping notification from DD! I already got a pristine one from amazon, so would sell this one for the same price I got it, or will return it to amazon. |

Yes they did, and yes it does suck. Quote:
I'm just responding to those who claim that it doesn't suck, it doesn't matter that it sucks, or the director may have wanted it to suck, therefore it doesn't really suck. Quote:
I seem to recall that some discs have been reissued after fixing audio problems. The most recent example that comes to mind is Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. But I don't expect Disney to care enough to do such a thing even if people contact them. Their indifference reeks. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be strongly criticized. I found my own solution: Muxing the DVD audio. Quote:

![]() Again, you make the false claim that I expected them to achieve the unmodified sound of live cannons, something I never said. What I did say was that it's not credible to claim that the fantastic BOOM of the DVD DTS track was not their "intent", even though they went to all the trouble of recording live cannons with lots of BOOM in the first place. |
