Well ya, it's OOP. But how fast a film disappears from shelves depends on how popular the film is. Pierrot isn't going to sell out as fast as a film like The Third Man. But if you want Pierrot it's better to not take any chances and buy it now.

If you must check 'em out (and I don't recommend blind-buying CC films), I would recommend something other than The Seventh Seal/Vivre Sa Vie. Yeah, I would never want to watch either of these films again.
snobs? So our love for film just boils down to us being snobs, nice LOL ...how about Criterion releases films for people who appreciate the diversity in film rather than the usual stuff that become big hits at the box office. It's not about watching 'better' films ..its about watching diverse films. I watch and enjoy the popcorn flicks and all that but I also have an urge to seek out different films and companies like Criterion satisfy that urge for me.

...the only people who are interested in buying Criterions are the ones who have already shown some interest in either foriegn films, obscure films or classic films because the average movie goer has no clue what Criterion is. Most of my purchases have been blind buys because at one point...Criterion was the only way I could see films like 400 blows. I also have not liked every purchase ..some have grown on me and others I'm still not sure about but the bottom line is that Criterion releases a diverse collection of films with excellent supplements and restored prints. Not every Criterion will appeal to ones tastes but I'm sure theres something in the collection that will to anyone even remotely passionate about cinema. I appreciate all the Criterions I own even if I didn't like every film.

If I was suggesting a Criterion to someone..I would first ask what films they are interested in and how familar they are with classic or foreign cinema and go from there....I wouldnt just say dont recommend The Seventh Seal AT ALL just because you didnt like it..what if a person liked Bergman's Wild Strawberries and wanted to explore more of his work?

Can anyone confirm that Criterion is going to release Tokyo story, late spring, early summer on blu-ray soon. I am very tempted to buy the BFI disks when they come out this summer. But would save my money if they were to be issues by criterion soon.....

I'm pretty sure that no one on these boards can confirm or deny it. Buying imports from BFI and Masters Of Cinema is always a risk because we can't be sure of what Criterion has on their list of future releases. With the BFI releases of those films, though, you're guaranteed to have them this year while it may not be another year or so until Criterion gets around to releasing certain Ozu films on blu-ray.

And that was your first Criterion purchase, right? If you enjoyed "8 1/2" then I can't see why you wouldn't enjoy the majority of Criterion's output. I don't think "8 1/2" is the easiest film for first-timers to digest, so if you thought it was a good film then you're on the path to a wealth of undiscovered cinema. Enjoy it all!

And "8 1/2" isn't even my favorite Fellini film, so I would suggest checking out some more of his films like "Amarcord," along with "Nights Of Cabiria," and "La Strada" to witness the beautiful Giulietta Masina in action.

I know you're kidding, but I'm certainly the furthest thing away from being film snob of any sorts. I just like to educate myself as much as I can about film, along with other aspects of life, before I go speaking about things I have no knowledge about. It's like sitting in a theater before a film begins and you're picking up on all the side conversations of people telling other people untruths about the upcoming film or another film, actors, etc. Before I speak, I just like to make sure that I'm well-versed in the subject at-hand. That's why you hardly ever see me posting my opinions about films because my opinions are irrelevant in this lifetime. Plus, I'm certainly not as knowledgeable about certain directors and films as others; I'm just someone who enjoys films of all types. For me, it's only the facts that matter.

What??? DVD packaging??? How is my mind supposed to be able take those images of the DVDs in clear plastic cases and apply it toward the imagined packaging of the blu-ray versions, which will also come in clear plastic cases? How is my mind going to be able to take those cases and make them shorter and fatter? It's all so complicated!!! Arghhhhh!

There is an answer for that somewhere in this thread. You are free to go and find it lazy.

Back on the packaging, I think they should of went another route for the inside of Red Desert. I get the point but this movie is the 1st color film of Michelangelo Antonioni for crying out loud. Mix it up. I do like the shot on the book, it should of been the cover and had a photo of Monica Vitti on the inside or something.

I'm 100% with you. My basic approach to film appreciation is to judge a film mostly on whether or not it portrays a good story that I can enjoy, learn something from, or relate to...

My tastes primarily fall into the indie/foreign realm but I also have plenty of mainstream films I love. I always cite the first Iron Man as a popcorn flick that works because the story works. I view all media this way. Literature, comics, and film...

Just bough "Pierrot le fou" yesterday.

I can't figure out why.

I absolutely loathe this movie...

But these are the reasons I justified spending $30.00 for this movie:
1) I am a completist.
2) It is going out of print.
3) I can try it again.
4) Put a tiger in your tank? (The only redeeming line...)

I told my wife that if she behaves badly I will punish her by making her watch this movie again for 10 minutes. She automatically started pleading with me.

I love him, I don't love him. I wonder, I don't wonder. I am here, I am not here.... Augh.

I really hope this is better the second time around.

Thanks you I need to pick some of those up on DVD since they are aren't out on BD yet.

My next Criterion purchase will either be Yojimbo/Sanjuro or Wages of Fear.
Any thoughts on those ?

You guys are movie lovers so I'd rather post it here than in the Movies section.
