i think these last couple of post were great. they were handled by a group of people with different points of view, they ended in a great understanding and respect for each others view and i think we all learned a little something and it was done peacefully. too bad this doesn't happen in more threads. i've see too many that always end up into a type written slug fest and nobody wins and nobody learns anything. i want to thank all of you who responded in on the speaker postioning placement issue as folks i do call friends. i hope others see how it's done and move forward with it in other threads.

thanks people, seriously, thanks

These are all so subjective, yet they do mean something to those of us who have had a lot of experience with speakers. Unfortunately, I have not. For me these words have little meaning. I guess the next step in my education is to spend time at my AV store auditioning and comparing speakers.

One caveat that I can't shake is how much of an impact the "hear what I want to hear" effect is. I.e. when we spend a pile of money, we expect it to sound better (need it to sound better) so it sounds better. This is all so subjective. I wonder how objective someone can be who just spent $3500 on a pair of towers.
I agree with you that everything we discuss on here is very subjective, you should never take someone's word about how things sound before you buy. Always listen for yourself and form your own opinions. This forum is good for a guide to give us ideas to try and find out what we like the best. To my ears the Studio's sound much better and the Sigs is another jump in performance. The problem is that the jump from Studio's to Sigs isn't as big as the price difference, but if you want the best you have to pay for it. If possible you should try some acoustical treatments before buying new speakers, I wish I had. Then I would know I was getting the max performance out of the Monitors and could have made a more informed evaluation of the difference between the two. The PBK is an excellent tool to get the max performance out of your sub in a very user friendly package. The DSP subs I had would have sounded much better but they were the V1 and not compatible with the PBK. I'm very happy with the upgrades so far and don't have any regrets. The Studio's are as far as I will go, the performance gap between the Sigs and Studio's is too small to justify the price difference for me.

PBK? Sorry I'm not familiar with that term. I've used an SPL meter to set the sub's level on my receiver, but haven't gone beyond that.

So placement is something you have to experiment with in order to find where your speakers sound best in your room.
So, are you suggesting (back to my question about sub placement) that if I place the sub with the ports into the hallway that the sound could be "too lite"?

Yeah, Advance is where I spent $10 000! At the time I litteraly knew nothing about speakers. I sat in the Monitor room and was taken through the different levels of speakers until I settled on the Monitor 9s. I only peaked into the hi-fi room. I'm thinking of stopping by there today and auditioning the Studios and Sigs (and others).

I wish it was all up to me... I have a ring on my finger that says otherwise!

One more question. (Thanks BTW for all the awesome replies.) Is the difference between the Studio 60s and 100s similar to the difference between the Monitor 9s and 11s?

Default never mind i found it myself!

I just found a review from June 2009 that states the latest version is V.5 with an identical photo of the ones on the site.

Done & Done!

I think the gap between the 60's and 100's is bigger, the 9's and 11's have the same amount of drivers which are closer in size. The 100's have an extra bass driver compared to the others and there is a bigger difference in size between them and the 60's. The 60's, 9's and 11's are all 2.5 way speakers while the 100's are a true 3 way speakers. The 100's are alot closer to full range speakers than the 60's.

Yes its possible. Typically the best thing to do is put the sub where you sit and then crawl around the room to see where the bass sounds the best, that is where you put the sub. Its called the sub crawl, they have a youtube video of it somewhere on the net. The closer the subs ports are to the wall the boomier it will sound, and the further away it can detract from the subs sound. It is something you should play with placement to see how it interacts with your room and where the best position is for the sub.

WOW!!!! 4 Monitor 11s...I think I've died and gone to heaven. I know that 390 centre is really big and needs a special cabinet. It took me a while to find something for my 690. Good luck.

Looking forward to seeing your new Panny!
