Watched Stagecoach for the first time & was in no way prepared for this film. Loved every minute! Also liked on the supplements, that Orson Wells looked up to Ford's Stagecoach.

Default Barnes & Noble Buy 2 Get 1 Free June 8th

I know we all wanted Barnes & Noble Criterion 50% off sale.. but looks like JUNE 8th kicks off their Buy 2 Get 1 Free Sale for all DVDs and Blu-Rays.

The sale is for all customers, however usually store coupons for members are still taken, I would think online will be the same also.

The manager I spoke to told me he is surprised their is still no word on a Criterion 50% off sale. He believes Barnes may do it again, but possibly instead of twice a year to once a year. This can't be confirmed, but it certainly seems this way.

Hopefully it lets us tack on the 20% off "new customer" code

The Leopard looks like a digipack.

Though if you look at that, it really doesn't show a cardboard inside. It still could be a clear case.

I think the Leopard case looks cool. I don't mind the type of case esp since my By Brakhage was in mint condition, so I expect this to be the same style.

I love the Night Train to Munich case but I'd like it even more if it were on BLU!

It's definitely not a clear case. If not a digi, it is a cardboard slip case like Che or Yojimbo/Sanjuro

That is what I meant. A clear case inside the box. I know it's a box. I said it might not have a cardboard inside, not outside.

Isn't this just a regular 2.5 hour or so film? Do they really need more than one Blu-Ray or are there just a ton of extras?

I've seen it a number of times, it happens occasionally. They're probably re-using some authoring templates and forgot to change the title.

2 versions of the movie, with a good amount of extras (including an hour-long documentary), hence $40.

Note:

Criterion's release of Red Desert is not identical to BFI's. The color-scheme is very different. Our review will be up tonight.

I don't have the BFI's, but I am hoping Criterion's disc is dark. I hope that is true. The colors need to pop on this film.

Can't wait for the review. Can't wait for this BD, my fav of the month.

For one thing, the BFI disc is single-layered...

Thanks a lot for the usual top-notch review, Svet!

My gut reaction to the transfer is that the colors look richer and more natural than the BFI: only Carlo di Palma would know for sure, of course.

But comparing this cap with this cap reveals that the BFI is quite a bit grainier with not much appreciable gain in detail, and a look that does tend to remind me of older telecines. And the one thing that Criterion certainly does have going for it is slightly less cropping on the sides of the image.

Looks like a stellar release. Thanks for the hard work!

I think I prefer Criterion's coloring as well, from the pics... but I do like the coldness of the BFI on a few of the caps. What kind of stinks is that, without reviews comparing the two, not many people would even know there was a difference, and everyone would be happy (for once) because of ignorance. Regardless, I'm thankful for the reviews and the people who do them.

Criterion is better. The BFI looks contrast boosted, too bluish, and with a bit of DNR. Compare these two shots, the cables, detail and edges on the ship look solid and straight on the Criterion, while they're all jagged and splotchy on the BFI. The grain structure is more consistent on the Criterion as well.
