As I said, I will stick to disc. But it does raise the question of why the digital copies with my 3D discs do not include the 3D version digitally. That's why I had not seen them before.
The code included with a 3D disc should redeem a 3D digital copy, those cheap bastards!

Posted earlier but may have been missed. AFAIK, all 3D streamers use either TaB (Top and Bottom) or SbS (Side by Side) method of 3D. That means you get either half the vertical resolution or half the horizontal resolution. This from memory so I hope my terms are correct.

Blu-ray uses frame packed 3D and has full vertical and horizontal resolution. Packed frames means one frame for left and one frame for right. This greatly increases the bandwidth requirements and is the reason all other forms of 3D delivery uses TaB or SbS.

For more info search: frame packed 3D

And not likely to change. Blu-ray Rentals has 3D titles for rent and go for a fair amount more than other outlets with non 3D BD. They have UHD BD as well.

It will be interesting to see if Redbox expands their UHD BD rentals.

People post off topic constantly and in many, many threads. If you want to correct them all, have at it, but you will be very, very busy and I suspect you will meet some strong resistance.

They can use you over in that A Few Good Men 4k thread when you're done policing this one; they have been off topic for at least a week. Better respond with sirens and lights! It's anarchy, I tells ya!

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...8#post15365148

I do not feel my response to you earlier in any way represents a "mob mentality" nor do I feel my reply was "canned." I put some effort into most of my replies. What's wrong with a little humor? I was not trying to "mask" anything, but rather I thought the use of a little mild humor would show I was not being adversarial in my reply to you, nothing more.

Why would a couple of side discussions about TV calibration, region free mod kits, and cool retro movie packaging drive anyone away? These are not controversial subjects.

What's the harm in wanting to converse with the same people whose comments you typically like reading and about whatever subject comes to mind? You are one of those people that many of us enjoying conversing with here, even about the selection of merlot as a home decorating color. Even you go off topic when you want to and I do not recall anyone taking you to task for it.

I still believe the best way to get back on topic is to post something on topic yourself. If you expect people's posting behavior to change to suit you, you will likely be disappointed in this thread and many others. Do not fail to notice also that no one is complaining about this but you.
The entire point of the General UO thread is for off-topic discussion. Mods typically pop in threads and will put it back on topic. What he’s saying is correct as the purpose of the thread is about digital and physical media, not whatever is being discussed now. The UO was moved and turned into a general thread for exactly what is now transpiring here. That’s his point and problem.

IMO some of the avoidant talk going on right now from certain parties is to avoid discussing the fact they are a weirdo who calls people’s stores are doesn’t understand sarcasm and deflected away from the topic altogether.

I personally don’t care what you guys discuss, but it’s technically against board rules as I’ve seen first hand when the UO got moved.

He's not a moderator and he goes off topic himself when he chooses to do so. Not as frequently maybe, but he still does so.

If it is an offense, then it is a jay walking level of one. Off topic discussions can be found everywhere. I see no specific rule on the forum rules page forbidding this, but, naturally, any directive from a moderator must be complied with.

I have addressed my recent behavior several times. I have not avoided it; I stopped talking about it because I thought it had been addressed sufficiently. My apology was accepted and its acceptance has been confirmed several times.

I left my posts up regarding that incident because they are both proof of what I did and they serve as a reminder for myself to do better going forward. If the wronged party wants me to delete any of them, all he has to do is ask me.

I am not going to allow that incident to silence me. If you want to remind me of this each time I post something you disagree with, then that is your choice. I can take it. I am done apologizing for it.

It is amazing the people that seemed so bothered by that incident never asked me the right question about it because: They never thought about what the right question was or if they did know the right question they did not ask it because the answer would make them look ridiculous.

OTOH, do as I did if you so chose, put them on your ignore list. Only saw the above because of your response to that poster.

The right answer is you denigrate people and harass them to the point of calling stores to prove some point online because you’re worried about a license to a film. You being a Vet or respecting people for their service was so cringeworthy as a rebuttal/apology that if text had eyeballs they would have rolled back and dropped dead.

Thank you for that clarification, but you were replying to me in that post, so I thought I was among the "certain parties", plural, being referenced.

Eh, I figured the part about not detecting sarcasm and never replying was a dead giveaway. But yeah, you’re fine. As I said I don’t care what people post but the personal and asinine comments from some are why it’s derailed to this point.

Please don’t take the “I will not be silenced!” defense Vilya. It is a weak stance. While you may have apologized, Wendell didn’t hasn’t offered a proper one. Instead he has been sidestepping it by ignoring posts mentioning it and making off topic posts. Being a Vet doesn’t give you a pass at being an *******. I speak from experience there. You are correct, I’m not a moderator. I’m just a concerned member who is tired of seeing the same one sided conversations that have no bearing on the topic. You are also correct that I’ve strayed off topic, but when I have it is usually to prove a point some people’s posts are. It is unfortunate that a moderator hasn’t come in here and cleaned house. I’d be okay with a suspension as long as I’m not alone.

No defense intended, as I have said before: indefensible actions are not to be defended. I meant every word of every apology I made and I still do. I just feel I have done all I can to address the incident.

Even if a "house cleaning" is needed, I don't think most of the off topic discussions warrant suspensions. Half of this community would likely be suspended at any given time if that were the remedy as off topic field trips happen daily and from multiple departure points.

I do not want to annoy you, but I can not guarantee that I will always stay on point. When I do wander off, I'll try not to go as far or for as long.

If you are going to quote me make sure it isn’t an abridged version Vilya. As I said in my previous post, you’ve apologized. Wendell hasn’t and has taken the chicken shit approach by adding people to his ignore list instead of addressing it. Seems hypocritical given he was giving me the “Man Up! speech not too long ago. You are also correct that threads stray from time to time, but you guys seem to revel in it.

It was initially funny, but grew tiring when I realized how many on topic posts were getting buried by them. Listen, I’m not asking too much. All I’m asking is that we get back on point. Otherwise this will be another thread that gets merged or locked down because the moderator are tired of dealing with it. Because eventually the right member is going to hit the report button.

As of now UHD/4K HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision and immersive audio source and playback is a smorgasbord of displays, source devices and content sources. UHD/4K disc and players are fairly well defined, UHD/4K streaming sources and what they play on is much less so.

A AVS member posted the following, link here:

Quote:
I started researching 4K UHD network media playback devices (both dedicated devices and players with network capabilities) last month, and it became confusing quickly.

For my own edification / sanity, I started tracking certain parameters / capabilities of the devices in a spreadsheet. Since I put a lot of work into the document, I thought I would share, and see if there is interest, or if it is worthy of the start of a reference document.

In the google sheet below, I collected a substantial amount of data, but there are still many pieces missing. I basically have completed my research and decided upon my path forward. However, if members are willing to discuss the various device capabilities, it might be an interesting thread. Let's see if it flowers or withers on the vine.

Mark
The spreadsheet here.

For projector folks there is the question of what kind and how good is the HDR Optimizer, if any, does the UHD/4K playback device contain.

It starts!

This type of thing makes me incredibly nervous and fortifies my belief that this is where we are heading with digital. It only takes a Netflix style success and BOOM! The exodus from the big tv will accelerate. That’s some pretty big companies getting involved now.

Behaviours can develop over night in the tech world. Look at binge watching. The difference is, with this mobile only thing, you can still binge a series but do it in 1 or 2 hours.

This type of thing is a major threat to film and long form and it also pre-preparing millennials and adults of the future. (Kids now) for a life without the television set. The Sky might just be falling.

Why do you have so few 4K movies???

All these essays you type on physical media and that's hardly a collection. #disappointed

I buy in bulk in December. Quite a few will be 4K, the others Blu-ray. This will be the first year I have bought 4K in bulk. It’s well doucumented how I do things. Aren’t you paying attention?

Isn’t this the part where you tell me it’s all my imagination and kids are not as dedicated to mobile viewing as I believe? You and your digital cronies are in denial. Short form is coming and it’s coming fast. All thanks to you enablers.

I'm staying with 1080p unless the 4K is a significant upgrade from the existing Blu-ray. I have a player that can play the UHD discs (Xbox One S) but my TV is still 1080p.

4K may be a thing of the past if services like the one I linked above come to fruition. Mobile only with massive investment from the likes of Alibaba and many media companies. Worrying times ahead for HT fans. We may be dumping our equipment as it will be about as useful as 3D tv if these mobile plans come off and everyone switches to the new short form premium content.
