I would love Song of the South as well. Especially given anyone who's actually seen it knows the "Racist" thing is balderdash.

Lawrence Kasdan. He was the main writer on Empire and Raiders.

Superman Returns was Brian Singer, who also did X Men 1 and 2, Batman Forever (and Batman And Robin) was directed by Joel Schumacher.

Oddly enough, i do wonder if Disney would feel need to sell the name of the new Director of Episode 7. Think about it, is it really neccesary to have the film advertised as 'From The Director of The Pirates Of The Caribbean Trilogy' for a new Star Wars film? Star Wars should be superior to whatever the director has done UNLESS the director is an A Lister like Spielberg or Ridley Scott.

Not going to happen. Scott has a whole shedload of projects on the go and is 75 years old as well. But to imagine such a film!

Gore Verbinski is almost as much an a-lister (maybe not critically) as Ridley Scott. But I agree that it should sell on Star Wars, not on any director.

Also, didn't Lucas say 'pass on to a new generation of filmmakers'? That would rule out the Spielberg's/Johnston's of this world.

I still have the old "Art of" books and his name is on nearly as many sketches as Ralph McQuarrie's. In my mind that would make him a great choice to carry the look and feel of the originals into the sequels.
Yup. That's why I listed him as one of my 5 top contenders. Green Lantern aside, I think Martin Campbell would also be a great choice, given his crowd-pleasing reboots of Zorro and James Bond (Casino Royale). Brad Bird would also seem to be a natural, given his track record, instincts, and work ethic. Spielberg would also be an obvious choice to carry on the franchise, although he may be eyeing retirement these days. And though it would make some fans head explode, after seeing Super 8, JJ Abrams seems to have his finger on the pulse of 70's and early 80's filmmaking, and would be a welcome choice.

I've never seen "Song" but can understand fans' frustration if it is just PC nonsense. Nevertheless if the studio head considers it racist (as I'm sure many others do - agree or not) it's not going to see the light of day until a change of personnel happens. This is similar to Warner's refusal to get Ken Russell's "The Devils" out on Blu/DVD in North America... still considered too blasphemous At least they finally got a release in the UK, even though it is only DVD and still has a certain infamous scene cut from it.
Anyway, there are no such issues barring the way for the UOT so it can't hurt to let Disney know we want it. Who knows maybe Mickey isn't even aware of the whole UOT debacle

This is so mind-numbing at the moment.. Doesn't seem real.
However, once those new episodes go into production... Katy bar the door!

Excited, at the possibilities I am.

Honestly, I'm not so much concerned about who directs it as I am who will be writing the script. To me, having a great story and telling it affectively is wayyyy more important than who directs it.

Having said that, my vote would go to Brad Bird. The guy just never lets me down!

Anyone here who does not think that Lucas will have at least SOME level of involvement in this is dreaming! He will be a consultant, you can bank on it.

As much as I'd love Spielberg to do it I can't see it happening. And imagine George trying to stay away from the film if Steven was directing! It'd be near impossible!

I think relatively new talent would be good. As some people have said, established directors tend to have an established way of working and their films, as a result, can share a similar style. The style with this film should be Star Wars, not (to use an extreme example) filled with Zack Snyder slow-mo lightsaber battles or Abrams' lens flare.

Spielberg would be so great but I wouldn't mind Duncan Jones getting a shot at it. I'd love to see what Edgar Wright would do with it as well. He's never directed a "straight" movie but he's certainly got a talent for action sequences and always directs as if he's making a massive blockbuster, even with Spaced. He stuff can be very stylistic but I certainly think he's the kind of guy who would adapt to suit the film. I'd love to see him do a straight film even if it's not Star Wars. Matthew Vaughn is also awesome but I can't imagine it being something he'd want to do for some reason.

I think Disney/Lucasfilm will probably make a pretty inspired choice though. I expect they'll take a note from Marvel who have picked some great out-of-left-field people and have got great results.

Oh believe me i know this will be the case, sadly, but i just think with Spielberg it could end up being more of a directorial collaboration rather than Lucas just giving advice which can be taken on board or ignored.

JJ Abrams. He did such an amazing job with STAR TREK. I was totally impressed with his take, and how he handled the characters.

Lens flares!

It isn't in Iger's mind...in a world where people threaten to blow up a Chik-Fil-A because of a CEO's stance on same-sex marriage, certain people would use Song of the South as a baseball bat to beat Disney upside the head to gain atention for their own causes. Disney isn't in business to make people angry or upset. This is why their ownership of Miramax proved so nettlesome for them...anytime Miramax made something controversial, certain groups tried to squelch the film by saying "Disney attacking the Church" or "Disney subverting family values", etc. I always found it amusing that when Miramax won Best Picture, no one in the press said "Disney wins Best Picture", but when Miramax made some hot-button film, the headlines were "Disney Releases Anti-Catholic Film" etc etc etc.

So, Iger knows this, and as much money as Song of the South would rake in, he knows sometimes profits aren't worth the ancilliary costs in bad press and bad feelings. Disney isn't in the Bad Feelings business. So, in the vault (and on YouTube) it will stay.

Somebody who loves Sci Fi, can develop characters intensely yet deliver epic action scenes, and is not afraid of going Dark -yet- bring hope, with a morality.

Neill Blomkamp, with G. Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy to monitor the level of violence/ gore to PG/ PG-13 types.

This being said, given the family-friendly angle, he might not be all that interested in doing these in the first place.
